Not all air purifiers are created equal. If you’re looking to capture dust, dander, and other particulates from the air in a large space—say 800 square feet or more—you’ll need to invest in a model that’s designed to handle high volumes of air.

Our top picks:

Best overall: Honeywell True HEPA
Best value: Honeywell InSight Series Home Air Purifier
Best design: Coway Airmega Mighty2 Air Purifier

Over the last five years, our team in the Good Housekeeping Home Improvement & Outdoor Lab has tested more than 50 air purifiers, evaluating their ability to capture contaminants ranging from microscopic dust mites to pet hair, across various sized spaces. We also weigh factors like ease of use, noise, and operating costs. Here are our top picks for large areas in your home.

Pros

  • Delivers excellent air cleaning across large spaces
  • Model line comes in a range of sizes
  • Replacement filters are affordable

Cons

  • Not the most elegant design

This Honeywell air purifier is capable of cleaning up to 1,500 square feet in 60 minutes, making it suitable for living rooms, master bedrooms, and even apartments. If you want to tackle even larger spaces (up to 2,250 square feet), you can opt for the extra-large model.

The air purifier uses a pre-filter and true HEPA filter to capture contaminants down to .3 microns, including dust and other airborne particulates. Our analysts appreciate that replacement filters are relatively affordable. The large-sized model claims to clean the air as often as five times an hour to remove up to 99.97% airborne particles. The only complaint from consumer testers with the Honeywell is its large housing and basic design.

Pros

  • Perfect scores for ease and effectiveness
  • Easy to adjust cleaning power
  • Effectively detected irritants in the air

Cons

  • Large housing takes up more floor space

While this HEPA air purifier only claims to handle a 360-foot cleaning area in 12.5 minutes, if you run it for longer stretches of time, it can handle much larger spaces, like a master bedroom or a large kid's playroom. "Honeywell has a solid track record in our tests, so you can count on this air purifier delivering many years of service," says Dan DiClerico, director of Good Housekeeping's Home Improvement and Outdoor Lab.

Ours pros like that the built-in air sensor monitors air quality in the room, letting you adjust cleaning power as needed, for example, kicking into turbo mode when the house is filled with cooking fumes or on high pollen count days. Despite its robust cleaning power, the Honeywell is energy efficient, with the Energy Star label to prove it.

In consumer testing, it earned perfect scores for ease and effectiveness. DiClerico was impressed by how well it detected irritants in the air, and other testers found it quiet and easy to operate. Just keep in mind its larger footprint.

Airmega Mighty2 Air Purifier

Pros

  • Automatically adjusts fan speed to air quality conditions in the room
  • Stylish design
  • Display features a real-time air-quality display

Cons

  • Not as effective at capturing smoke and cooking fumes

This sleek-looking true-HEPA air purifier from Coway, winner of a 2026 Good Housekeeping Parenting Award, cleans home air with a three-stage filtration system that automatically responds to changing air quality. A quiet sleep mode, intuitive touchscreen controls, and a washable filter make it especially easy to use in family room, bedroom, or other shared space.

“Coway’s Airmega model line has been a consistent high performer in our tests,” says DiClerico. “This latest model improves on that performance and is also one of the better-looking air purifiers on the market.” If you plan to place the air purifier in the bedroom, you’ll appreciate the ability to turn off all the lights on the display. The real-time air-quality display provides confidence that the air is being cleaned. In home and Lab tests, it was a bit less effective at capturing smoke and cooking fumes, so it’s not the best option for kitchens.

Purifier Humidify+Cool PH03

Pros

  • Fast, efficient air cleaning
  • Can also cool and humidify indoor air
  • Sleek appearance and display

Cons

  • Larger housing takes up more space in the room

While it doesn't come cheap, we recommend this air purifier from Dyson for anyone seeking to optimize their home's indoor air quality. What makes this sleek-looking appliance unique is that it also has humidifying and cooling capabilities so you can use it year-round.

To filter the air, it features a catalytic filter combined with true HEPA filtration to reduce particulate matter down to .3 microns. It was one of the fastest and most efficient models in our Lab tests and features some of the most sophisticated onboard air monitors in any purifier. Our pros do warn that it is on the larger side however, standing 3 feet tall.

75i HEPA Air Purifier

Pros

  • Powerful air cleaning
  • Captures large and small particulates

Cons

  • Extra ionization setting not recommended by our experts

If optimal air quality is your priority, and you’re willing to spend more for it, look no further than this top-performing machine from Alen. Thanks to a HEPA filter, it can capture contaminants down to .1 microns and combines advanced filtration with a powerful fan to cover up to 2,800 square feet.

Note that our experts don't recommend using Alen's ionization setting (designed to combat even more pollutants), since it can produce ozone, a lung irritant. Even without this feature, we're confident that this air purifier can capture dust, pollen, smoke and more to help improve your home's air quality.

They also confirmed that it lives up to its whisper-quiet claim.

How we choose the best large room air purifiers

an expert examines the filters on air purifiers
Philip Friedman

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we test air purifiers throughout the year. Our product experts keep tabs on the marketplace to identify the best air purifiers that you’re most likely to find in stores and online. We also attend trade shows and industry events, like the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), to stay on top of the latest innovations in indoor air quality. Next, we identify brands that have performed well and proved reliable over more than a decade of air purifier testing. We also consider new brands with unique features or innovations.

Our Lab experts selected the best air purifiers for large rooms based on a review of technical data, claimed coverage area, and more. We also factored in feedback from hands-on testing that took place both in our Lab and homes.

Controlled Lab tests measured an air purifier's ability to capture specific contaminants, such as smoke and other VOCs (volatile organic compounds). At-home testing checked for general improvement of freshness, as well as overall usability. Our consumer testers measure factors like ease of setup, intuitiveness of controls, and how uncomplicated it is to locate and replace the filter (or clean it, when applicable).

Following the combined 60 hours of data review, Lab testing, and at-home evaluations, we arrived at our list of best air purifiers for large rooms out of 50 tested models.

What to look for when shopping for the best air purifier for a large room

linebreak

✔️ Coverage area: When choosing an air purifier for a large room, check the square footage it's designed to cover as listed by the manufacturer. You may see one area listed for the coverage provided in one hour, and another for the coverage provided in five hours. Our pros advise paying attention to the lower number as you'll want an air purifier that cleans air quickly.

✔️ Filtration: Air purifiers typically rely on mechanical filters with a web of fine fibers to trap particles from the air that's pushed through by a fan. True HEPA filters use a fine mesh that's certified to capture 99.97% of particles measuring at least 0.3 microns. They provide the best cleaning power. You'll also find HEPA-like filters that aren't certified to meet this standard, as well as other filtration technologies.

✔️ Extra costs: Before investing in an air purifier, take note of the cost of a replacement filter. This can range from $20 per filter to $100 and up. Depending on your room's air quality, you can expect to replace it multiple times throughout the year.

✔️ CADR: This stands for "clean air delivery rate," and refers to how much clean air the air purifier produces among various pollutants. According to our pros, the CADR should be at least two-thirds of the area that the air purifier will be cleaning.
