There’s a reason so many of us love to use filters on our social media posts—they instantly make skin look smoother and more even. Blurring primers do the same thing IRL. “A blurring primer is basically a makeup prep step that helps smooth the look of pores, texture, and fine lines before you put on foundation,” says L'Oreal Paris League of Experts Makeup Artist Erica Taylor. “Think of it like a soft filter for your skin—it helps create a smoother canvas so makeup goes on more evenly.”

While makeup primers come in many types, blurring formulas are best for that filtered finish. “A blurring primer should be one of the first steps in your makeup routine. It preps the skin before foundation to create a smoother, more even-looking complexion,” says Laura Geller, founder of Laura Geller Beauty and veteran makeup artist. “A good blurring primer helps your skin look naturally flawless.”

Our top picks:

Most blurring primers use ingredients like silicone or dimethicone that sit on the surface of the skin and “fill in” texture, pores, and uneven spots, Taylor explains. “That’s what gives the skin that soft, smooth look,” she says. “The nice thing is there are also silicone-free versions now that can give a similar effect but with a little more hydration.”

GH Beauty Lab Senior Chemist Danusia Wnek adds that "generally, the silicones help makeup adhere better to skin for a longer wear time. Some blurring primers also contain oil absorbers like clays, silica, and/or starches to help skin look matte longer."

Spackle Skin Perfecting Primer Brighten-n-Blur

Pros

  • Long-wear formula
  • Lightweight jelly texture grips makeup
  • Blurs pores and fine lines

Cons

  • Some reviewers didn’t like the jelly texture

Geller calls her favorite primer “a must try” because of the way it preps the skin and creates the perfect canvas. “I love a blurring primer that smooths the skin but still feels lightweight and comfortable,” she says. “The best ones blur pores and fine lines while helping makeup stay put all day.” The long-wearing formula also helps brighten skin, and its jelly texture grips makeup onto skin, though some reviewers didn’t like the texture.

Prime Lab Pore Minimizer Primer

Pros

  • Treats appearance of pores immediately and over time
  • Fights dullness
  • Balances skin

Cons

  • Some reviewers said it dries out skin

Proof that you don’t have to break the bank to nab a great blurring primer, “one drugstore primer I recommend all the time is L’Oréal Paris Prime Lab Pore Minimizer Primer,” Taylor says. “It’s great because it blurs pores but also has AHA and BHA in it, so it’s actually helping treat the look of pores while you wear it.” It also contains niacinamide to address dullness both immediately and over time, as well as salicylic acid to balance skin. However, some reviewers found it drying.

Ballin’ Base Poreless Primer

Pros

  • Cooling rollerball depuffs
  • Skincare-forward formula
  • Blurs pores

Cons

  • Glow shades may be too shimmery for some

Puffy, tired skin can be tough to deal with—but this primer is designed to help. I saw it firsthand after a sleepless night, when it instantly made my skin look calmer and more refreshed. The innovative roll-to-reset applicator features a cooling rollerball that helps depuff while smoothing the appearance of pores. Its LumiPearl technology enhances that smoothing effect, while also boosting radiance and delivering up to 24 hours of hydration.

The skincare-packed formula contains 24 nourishing ingredients, including maracuja oil to firm and brighten, aloe leaf extract to hydrate and soothe, cloudberry for radiance, niacinamide to minimize the appearance of pores, and diamond powder to blur. It comes in matte, pearl glow, and bronze glow shades, but the glow shades may be too shimmery for some. I found the matte option to be perfect for my combination skin—it zapped excess shine while helping my makeup look fresher for longer.

Instant Smooth-Perfecting Touch Face Primer

Pros

  • Blurs fine lines and wrinkles
  • Smooths pores
  • Hydrates

Cons

  • Can be drying for some

Designed to fill in fine lines, pores, and even deep wrinkles, this primer also smooths and hydrates skin, preparing it for foundation. The formula contains acacia micro-pearls to smooth, vitamin E to nourish, and soft-focus pigments to blur. “This is one of the best blurring primers I’ve tried,” says GH Beauty Lab Reviews Analyst Chiara Butler. “It really has a soft-focus effect and conceals all the little lines and pores in the skin. It looks amazing in photos.” However, some reviewers with dry skin said it exacerbated dryness.

The Original Photo Finish Smooth & Blur Primer

Pros

  • Hydrating
  • Soft-focus effect
  • Nourishes with vitamins A and E

Cons

  • May not be matte enough for very oily skin

As someone who struggles with texture (enlarged pores and acne scars have haunted me practically forever), I often rely on this clear gel primer to create a smooth canvas. I still use it on makeup-free days to give my skin a more even appearance. Super lightweight, it easily goes onto skin for a soft-focus finish. It’s spiked with vitamins A and E to nourish. However, on hot summer days, when my oil production goes into overdrive, I still need to blot mid-day, so it may not be matte enough for super oily complexions.

Pores No More Pore Refiner Primer

Pros

  • Instantly mattifies
  • Velvety texture
  • Smooths skin
  • Great oil control

Cons

  • May be too matte for very dry skin

An oldie but goodie, this is the first makeup primer I fell in love with many years ago. I still remember how shocked I was to see the dramatic transformation in my skin when I swiped it on—my pores practically vanished. It instantly mattified, truly taking away all shine with its velvety texture. I’ve used it solo on no-makeup days to prevent an oil slick, but it also sets the stage for makeup by helping it last much longer. However, those with very dry skin may find its mattifying powers too strong.

How we chose the best blurring makeup primers

We gathered recommendations from professional makeup artists and drew on GH beauty editors’ experience using these primers to assess their blurring effect, texture, ability to extend makeup, and overall wear.

What to look for in a blurring makeup primer

✔️ Hydrating ingredients: “Hydrated skin almost always looks better under makeup,” Taylor says. “If you have dry skin but still want that smoothing effect, try looking for silicone-free formulas and ones that have some hydrating ingredients mixed in. That way, you get the blur without highlighting the dryness.” Look for hydrating ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid.

✔️ Soft focus powders: “This will mattify your skin's texture to diminish the look of fine lines and imperfections and eliminate shine,” Geller says. “Another great ingredient to look for is glycerin. It helps blur the appearance of pores while maintaining hydration, which improves skin texture and reduces shine for an overall filtered finish.”

✔️ Skin type: It's important to shop for your complexion's needs. "If you have dry skin, look for 'hydrating' on packaging, and if you have oily skin, look for 'mattifying' blurring primers," Wnek says.

✔️ Dimethicone: “A lot of traditional primers use dimethicone, which is what gives a smoothing effect,” Taylor says. “Think of the classic, original Smashbox Photo Finish. But there are newer formulas now that use different smoothing polymers and can be silicone-free, which can feel a little lighter and sometimes more hydrating.”

How do blurring makeup primers help makeup last longer?

double line break

“Primers create a bit of a barrier between your skincare and your makeup,” Taylor says. “They help lock in your skincare while also giving your foundation something to grip onto. That extra layer helps makeup wear longer throughout the day.”

How do blurring makeup primers work to give a soft-focus finish?

“Instead of completely eliminating imperfections, they soften the look of them by scattering light, which gives skin that smooth, soft-focus effect, almost like a real-life filter,” Geller says. “Most blurring primers are typically enriched with soft-focus powders that help diffuse light on the skin.”

Which skin types are blurring primers best for?

double line break

“They usually work best for oily skin or anyone who has larger, more visible pores. Those formulas really help smooth things out and control shine,” Taylor says. No skin type necessarily has to avoid them, but the formula matters, according to Geller. “Very silicone-heavy primers can sometimes feel too matte or drying on already dry skin,” she says. “If your skin is dehydrated, you’ll want to choose a blurring primer that also contains hydrating ingredients so it smooths rather than emphasizes texture.”

What is the best way to apply a blurring primer?

Be sure always to follow the product instructions for best application, Wnek advises.

Begin with clean, moisturized skin. “I like to start in the center of the face—around the nose, cheeks, and forehead—because that’s usually where pores are most visible,” Taylor says. “Then I blend it outward. I personally love using my fingers because the warmth of your hands helps it melt right into the skin.” Geller recommends letting the primer set for about a minute before applying foundation.
