There are days when you want to push a compact, lightweight travel stroller (a quick grocery run, a trip through the airport), but increasingly, I see families using a jumbo stroller called a stroller wagon. These heavy-duty haulers seat two to four kids, plus a bunch of stuff.

Parents use stroller wagons to head to the park, the beach, the zoo, or the farmer's market. They push wagons through local fairs and down beach boardwalks. I see them everywhere outdoors, except in Disney World—stroller wagons are forbidden there due to their large size.

Our top picks:

There are two-seaters, quads, and even stroller wagons that can hold up to six kids. (Pushing that is a workout!) Many stroller wagons can hold one infant car seat, so you can use it with an infant and a toddler together.

best ease of use stroller wagon wonderfold
    wonderfold l2 double stroller wagon

    Pros

    • Zip-down side door for easy in and out
    • Converts to a playpen or a bench seat
    • Extra-large sunshade
    • All-terrain wheels for smooth rolling
    • There are 4-seater and 6-seater options

    Cons

    • It's big!

Best for: Transporting two to six kids in style.

Why I like it: A a zip-down side door helps kids climb in and out. That feature is exclusive to the brand's "L" series of strollers. I also love the giant sunshade.

This is the only stroller wagon I know that can hold not just one but two infant car seats at the same time. You must buy each car seat adaptor separately; there are adaptors that fit eight different car seat brands, including Graco, Chicco, Britax, and Nuna.

Testing notes: When you get where you're going, you can convert the wagon into a playpen. Or, if you're at a parade or outdoor show, it converts to a bench seat. We gave this one of our most recent Parenting Awards.

Families attest to the all-terrain wheels rolling well. “It was easy to maneuver this stroller in the city as well as on the beach,” one tester said. Another said, “The big wheels are great for rough terrain and uneven sidewalks, which is why we keep using it for walks to town with the kids."

This is one of the largest stroller wagons. It's made to be pushed, not pulled.

Other versions: The brand's W series includes the WonderFold W4 four-seater stroller wagon if you're looking for a quad. And the Wonderfold W6 can hold six kids, up to 140 pounds.

    Pros

    • Universal car seat adaptor and mosquito net included
    • Lowest price on our list
    • Can be pushed or pulled
    • Deep seats for tall kids and storage

    Cons

    • Three-point harnesses only

Best for: Snagging a stroller wagon for two for under $200.

Why I like it: The affordable Expedition offers the best entry price point. The pluses first: You can push or pull this and the seats are nice and deep for the kids, with each getting a snack tray and drink holder.

The Expedition only provides three-point harnesses to strap the kids in and it's hard to make the adjustable canopy provide solid shade for two kids at once. But there is mosquito netting that pulls out of both sides of the canopy—that shields kids from bugs, and blocks some sun.

Testing notes: The Expedition comes with a universal car seat adaptor that can accept 11 brands of infant car seats.

When folded, this loses height but is still about 45" x 26" so you'll need a roomy trunk.

Other versions: The Plus version of this stroller wagon includes, among other things, breathable panels on the canopy and an extra storage basket.

    Veer Cruiser

    Pros

    • Handles all terrain, even soft sand
    • Compact fold and airport-ready
    • Largest weight capacity of any wagon on our list
    • XL version accommodates up to four kids

    Cons

    • With accessories, the price adds up

Best for: Strolling the beach, rocky trails, and other rough terrain.

Why I like it: If you're an adventurous family who wants something top-of-the-line for hikes and beach jaunts, the wheels can handle sand and stones. It also has a large weight capacity: 250 pounds.

I recommend purchasing some of the add-on accessories, including the retractable canopy and the rain canopy. That does mean that the price starts to add up.

Testing notes: The Veer is compact and folds relatively flat. This wagon can be gate-checked at the airport like a regular stroller, and we had a parent confirm that.

If you have a baby, you can use this with a car seat adapter (available for seven different popular brands) or in bassinet mode. For older kids, it's easy to pop in the snack tray.

Other versions: The Cruiser XL features four seats.

    Now 7% Off

    Pros

    • Folds easily
    • Fits four kids
    • Adjustable handle
    • Smart storage

    Cons

    • Give yourself time for assembly

Best for: Taking four toddlers, or seating two with lots of room.

Why I like it: This folds more easily than most, key if you have young kids and not a lot of time to fuss. But mostly it's great for fitting four kids for less than the cost of other quad stroller wagons.

The Voya can not hold a car seat so it is for babies starting at 6 months, and ideal for toddlers and preschoolers.

Testing notes: Our tester families loved it. "The adjustable handles make it easy for my husband and I to switch who uses it," one parent wrote.

Another said that Radio Flyer solved a few pain points. "I love that the parent caddy stays upright when you fold the handle. The parent cupholders are great and not in the way when maneuvering through tight spaces, and it folds up very easily."

This does take some assembly though. While at least one tester told us it was "easy," another wrote, "Putting it together was a bit more intricate than it needed to be."

Other versions: The Voya comes in 2- and 4-seat versions, and with high or low sides. We tested the 4-seat, high-sides version, but you could get 2 Seats, High Sides, 2 Seats, Low Sides, or 4 Seats, Low Sides and those are each under $500.

    Best Compact

    Evenflo Pivot Xplore

    Pros

    • Easy to push and pull, steer, and turn
    • More compact than many stroller wagons
    • Each kid gets a snack tray and a canopy
    • Mesh body can drain rainwater and makes it easy to clean

    Cons

    • Less interior space than some others

Best for: Fitting a wagon your vehicle to get where you're going.

Why I like it: The Pivot Xplore is compact for a stroller wagon, suitable for taking on road trips. (It folds, very roughly, to about 2' x 2' x 3'.) Because of its reasonable size, moving the Pivot Xplore around is similar a regular stroller—it's easier than many wagons to steer and turn.

Flip the handle over to go from pushing to pulling, whichever is easier for the terrain you're on.

Testing notes: Some interior storage space had to be sacrificed to keep the footprint small, but added storage baskets attached to the exterior help contain all your kids' essentials. Two individual canopies offer shade for each kid. Each kid gets a snack tray and drink holder, too.

Parts of the body are mesh, so if rain gets inside, it can drain out. You can add a car seat adapter to bring an infant, but it is only compatible with Evenflo car seats.

Other versions: Two other colors may cost a bit less, the black and the green.

    Pros

    • Car seat adapter included
    • Detachable cooler bag
    • Full shade

    Cons

    • Handles most, but not all, terrain with ease

Best for: Getting everything you need right out of the box.

Why I like it: Jeep's stroller wagon comes with a car seat adaptor that works with many Graco, Evenflo, Britax, and Chicco infant car seats, making this suitable from birth for many families. It's also sold with a detachable cooler bag, large storage pouches, and a parent cupholder (in the newest version I saw, the cupholder can hold a Stanley).

The two handles adjust to any of five angles, allowing you to push or pull from either side. A roll-down canopy can provide full sun protection.

Testing notes: The inside of the wagon is spacious and the full canopy does a good job of keeping little ones in the shade. It can handle most terrain, but for something like sand, you'll need to lift the front end and pull it through the sand on the larger rear wheels.

Other versions: Take four kids in the Delta Children Jeep Wrangler Deluxe 4-Seater.

How I chose the best stroller wagons

a person holds the harness straps on a stroller wagon
    Philip Friedman

I've covered the baby gear market for 25 years, writing about strollers, including stroller wagons, for Parents magazine before moving to Good Housekeeping. I've personally seen all six stroller wagons on this list, plus many others in the course of my reporting.

The Wonderfold and Radio Flyer stroller wagons got additional testing as part of the annual Good Housekeeping Parenting Awards. We looked at them in the office and sent them to families for real-life feedback. One of our former directors, a parent of three, used the Veer, including on a vacation so we could check its claims about being able to be gate-checked.

The Evenflo, Delta, and Baby Trend stroller wagons were chosen based on my experience seeing them firsthand, stellar online reviews, and the fact that all three are trusted brands that have been manufacturing safe strollers for decades.

What to look for when shopping for a stroller wagon

    linebreak

    Consider the following:

    ✔️ Safety:

    • Heed a stroller's maximum weight capacity. Children who are too heavy for a wagon can cause the seats to sag and the frame to buckle.

    • Don't put an infant under 6 months on the seat of a stroller wagon unless they are in a car seat held in properly by a car seat adaptor.

    • A five-point harness holds a small child steadier than a three-point harness.

✔️ Adjustable handlebar: A telescoping handlebar that can be raised or lowered is nice if the wagon will be passed between caregivers of different heights. I also like wagons that can be either pushed or pulled, so you have options.

✔️ Storage: The more the merrier for carrying gear, toys, and snacks. But of course the larger the stroller wagon, the more room it takes up in your house and car.

✔️ Canopy: Ideally you’ll want a well-designed canopy that will be large enough to cover as many kids as the wagon stroller can safely hold.

✔️ All-terrain wheels: Large, nubby wheels are your best bet for tackling rough terrain.

✔️ High sides vs low sides: High sides keep kids tucked inside and prevent them from being tempted to touch passing doggies or anything else. But low sides make for a smaller, more compact wagon.

    Are stroller wagons worth it?

siblings share a seat in a stroller wagon
    Courtesy of Tester

Buying a stroller wagon is worth it for so many reasons. They're great for long outtings at the beach or park. They're nice if you take the kids through farmers' markets or street festivals. A wagon is handy any time you go out all day, and if you're less concerned with maneuvering down crowded sidewalks and more concerned with, for instance, having a place to sit younger kids while the older ones play soccer.

Other uses I've heard of: Taking kids around on Halloween, going up and down a long driveway if you live in a rural area, visiting a zoo, and even just going to the mall. Families who live in climates with frequent ice and snow say they find wagons easier to maneuver in wintertime than regular strollers.

Likely the most important reason families like stroller wagons? They're fun! Parents report that their kids ask for a ride in the wagon versus the traditional stroller. They make little kids feel big!
