Traveling is all about capturing moments you’ll want to relive long after your trip is over. While smartphones offer a convenient way to take photos and videos on the go, they don’t always deliver the versatility or quality you’ll find with a dedicated travel camera. Whether you’re looking for a compact point-and-shoot, an easy-to-use instant camera, or something in between, there’s no shortage of options available for all kinds of budgets and needs.

The tech and travel experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute have tested travel gear and accessories for decades, including cameras for kids. To find the best travel cameras for the entire family, we evaluated some of the most popular models on the market, focusing on their portability, performance, and ease of use. These are the top travel-friendly compact cameras to consider before your next vacation.

Pros

  • Exceptional image quality
  • Compact and lightweight for a premium camera
  • Fixed lens optimized for sharpness and detail
  • Intuitive controls despite advanced features
  • Great for serious photographers

Cons

  • Very expensive
  • Fixed lens limits versatility
  • Not ideal for beginners

While undeniably the priciest camera on this list, the Sony RX1R III is for serious travel photographers who want portability without sacrificing image quality or performance. During testing, I was impressed by how compact and lightweight the camera felt, making it easy to carry all day without the bulk of a traditional DSLR. Despite being significantly more advanced than what I’m used to, it remained approachable.

Photography enthusiasts will appreciate its exceptional image quality, thanks to a high-end sensor and fixed lens that deliver stunning detail and incredible clarity, even in challenging lighting conditions. For those willing to invest, it’s a powerful, travel-friendly option that delivers professional-level results. Just keep in mind that the lens is fixed, so you won’t be able to swap lenses when you need better zoom.

Pros

  • Instantly prints photos
  • Extremely easy to use and great for beginners
  • Built-in selfie mirror on lens
  • Cute design available in five shades

Cons

  • Film can be expensive with frequent use
  • Bulkier than other compact travel cameras

There’s something so fun about capturing memories on an instant camera and watching them develop before your eyes. My personal favorite is the Instax Mini 12. It’s a bit larger than some of the more compact cameras on this list, but it’s so worth it. Not only does it come in five pretty pastel colors, but it’s extremely easy to use. I love that it features a selfie mirror on the lens, a close-up mode for centered shots, and a built-in flash. Keep in mind that film is expensive, and you’ll probably want to pack a roll so you don’t run out.

For a more stylish instant camera with extra features like a built-in screen and smartphone connectivity, I also like the Instax Mini Evo.

Pros

  • Compact, pocket-friendly design
  • Simple, intuitive controls
  • Versatile for various types of photography

Cons

  • Less control than interchangeable-lens systems

You might remember the Canon PowerShot from before smartphones were a thing. I definitely used one back when I was in high school and college, and there’s a reason it’s been around for nearly 30 years. A digital point-and-shoot, I recently tested a modern, much-improved PowerShot and found it just as easy to use as I remember. I love that it’s compact enough to slip into a pocket while still offering plenty of versatility for capturing everything from everyday moments to travel highlights. But keep in mind that while offering more control than a smartphone, it still won’t offer as much as an interchangeable-lens system.

Pros

  • Ultra-compact, lightweight design small enough for keychains
  • Fun and easy to use
  • Delivers vintage-style photography, with optional frames and filters
  • Built-in screen to review photos and videos
  • Rechargeables via USB-C

Cons

  • Lower image and video quality
  • Limited functionality
  • SD card not included

This palm-sized digital camera is about as small as it gets. You can literally attach it to keychains or even clip it onto a purse or backpack, thanks to the included keyring. I found it super easy and fun to use, and I could see it being a hit on vacation, since I personally don’t want to lug a massive DSLR around to a sandy beach or out to dinner.

While photo and video quality doesn’t compare to what you would get from a modern smartphone, the Charmera delivers a vintage look (think 90’s style home videos). I loved the teeny camera’s retro look and appreciate that it features a miniature digital screen so you can review your photography. You can also choose among four frames and seven filters to add some personality to your shots. Just note that an SD card doesn’t come included, but the battery is rechargeable via USB-C.

Best Mobile Travel Camera

Pros

  • Combines tripod, gimbal, and selfie stick in one device
  • Delivers smooth, stable video footage
  • Eliminates the need to carry a separate camera
  • Compact, foldable design
  • Excellent for creating professional-looking travel videos

Cons

  • Noticeable learning curve
  • Will drain phone battery
  • Not as convenient for quick photography

A tripod and gimbal in one, the DJI Osmo is for anyone who likes to capture footage on the go without having to carry around a phone and a camera. By connecting your phone to the device, you’re able to shoot super stable videos even when you’re biking, hiking, or trying to keep your balance on a boat. It also doubles up as a selfie stick, which you can use to capture your surroundings when sightseeing.

Though there’s definitely a learning curve and you’ll have to spend some time discovering everything that the Osmo Mobil 8 has to offer, it’s a useful tool if you want more professional-looking footage so you can create the perfect vacation highlights reel. Plus, I love how it folds up into a compact size that you can easily fit into a backpack for a day of touring or adventure.

Pros

  • Combines digital and instant features
  • 3.5-inch touchscreen makes it easy to review and edit photos
  • Built-in filters and stickers
  • Doesn't print immeditely
  • Compact, user-friendly design

Cons

  • Requires paper refills for printing

This instant camera offers the best of both worlds. It features a 3.5-inch touchscreen so you can review your photos and add silly filters and stickers before printing. You can then print out your memories on sticky-backed paper for a travel scrapbook, or you can upload them directly to social media thanks to Bluetooth connectivity. When testing it out, I found it compact and intuitive to use. I also appreciated that it doesn’t print photos instantly, giving you time to review and edit your shots before committing to a print.

The experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute’s Tech and Engineering Lab have years of experience evaluating travel gear and consumer electronics, from cameras and smartphones to accessories designed for life on the go. To identify the best travel cameras, we tested 10 of the most popular and highly rated models in the real world, capturing photos and videos in a range of conditions, including bright light, low light, and motion.

Our testing process considered a variety of key factors, including overall performance, image and video quality, ease of use, and portability, including how easy each camera was to carry, pack, and use on the go. To assess ease of use, we evaluated how intuitive the controls, menus, and setup were for first-time and experienced users. We also looked at design features, such as size, weight, and build, as well as any standout functionalities that enhance the user experience, features like image stabilization, autofocus performance, connectivity, and shooting modes. By testing how the cameras performed during real-world use, like walking, shooting handheld, and quick capture moments, we were able to narrow down the top options that deliver both quality results and convenience for travelers of all kinds.

What to look for when shopping for a travel camera

✔️ Size: When you’re traveling, the last thing you want is bulky gear weighing you down. Look for a camera that’s compact and lightweight enough to carry all day comfortably, whether in a crossbody bag, backpack, or even your pocket.

✔️ Image and video quality: A good travel camera should noticeably outperform your smartphone, especially in challenging lighting conditions. Pay attention to sensor size, resolution, and lens quality, which all play a role in producing sharp, vibrant images and smooth video.

✔️ Ease of use: If you don’t want to fuss with complicated settings while sightseeing, opt for a camera with intuitive controls and automatic modes. Beginners may prefer point-and-shoot or instant cameras, while more experienced users might enjoy manual controls for greater creative flexibility.

✔️ Camera type:

  • Fixed lens cameras (including point-and-shoots) are excellent for everyday and travel photography. They offer both superior image quality and portability without the need to swap lenses.
  • Interchangeable lens cameras like DSLRs are bulkier, but they offer more creative freedom and control with your photography.
  • Instant cameras are the easiest to use and fun for beginners or kids. They instantly print out photos, making them ideal for travel scrapbooking or collages.
  • Compact digital cameras (a subset of fixed-lens cameras) are also beginner-friendly, in addition to being compact, portable, and versatile enough for a wide range of shooting styles.
