- Most popular: Parachute Linen Sheet Set
- Most luxurious: Cultiver Linen Sheet Set With Pillowcases
At the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, we've been testing consumer products, including bedding, for more than a 100 years. In the past few years alone, we have tested more than 300 sheet sets, including 40 linen and hemp styles—both in our Textiles Lab and with the help of hundreds of at-home consumer testers who try them out in their own beds. We've evaluated everything from comfort to shrinkage and fabric strength to find the set you're going to look forward to spending eight hours a night on. Here are our top picks for the best linen sheets, with prices for Queen-sized sets.
Pros
Testers loved the soft, comfortable feel
Fits nicely on tall beds
Material grows softer with time
Cons
May run warmer than other picks, according to testers
While some linen sheets can feel a bit scratchy, this set is anything but, earning top scores in our blind softness comparison evaluation. The Citizenry uses a special stonewash process, which creates a soft, worn-in texture that impressed our testers who thought it felt ultra-comfortable but also said it looked gorgeous on their beds.
This set easily outperformed other linen sheets we tested and stood out for its minimal shrinkage and soft yet strong fabric.
WHAT USERS SAY: The sheets were a hit among our consumer testers: Many preferred them to other linen sheets they'd slept on, and several highlighted how they softened with time and use. One shared, "I loved the feel of the sheets. They are so soft yet substantial and natural feeling. I can't wait to get in bed and don't want to get out."
Sometimes, linen sheets are stiff, making them hard to stretch over tall mattresses or beds with toppers, but our testers said these sheets worked well with tall beds. One commented, "I was exceedingly pleased by how well these sheets fit my deep mattress. They have not budged one time and were easy to put on all four corners."
Note that some of our testers found that the material didn't keep them as cool as they'd like, though many appreciated that they could use them year-round because they ran a little warmer.

Pros
Cotton and linen blends tend to have a softer feel than 100% linen
Breathable materials
Six-piece sets with additional pillowcases available
Cons
Fiber blends can be more prone to pilling
If you're looking to save rather than splurge, consider a blend of linen and cotton to help keep the cost low. This set has 55% linen and 45% cotton in the mix, which when combined, can feel softer than 100% linen sheets. They're an approachable option if you're interested in linen but aren't quite sure if the texture is for you. From our experience, sheets made with linen blends can pill more quickly than 100% linen sheets, though.
The price can't be beat for someone hoping to spend less than $100 for a new bedding set. You'll get two pillowcases, a fitted sheet, and a top sheet, but you can opt for a six-piece set with additional pillowcases.
WHAT USERS SAY: Online reviewers said they were surprised by the high quality of these sheets. They commented on the temperature-regulating abilities of the material, sharing that they slept comfortable without overheating. Both cotton and linen are naturally breathable fibers, so the sheets should feel nice and cool to sleep on, especially as the summer season approaches.
If you're used to 100% cotton sheets, keep in mind that these likely won't feel quite as soft. However, they will feel softer than 100% linen sheets, and many online reviewers loved the feel.

Pros
Material proved durable in tests
Delicate trim
Garment-washed for softness
Cons
Thin, may not conceal logos/colors from mattress or pillows
With a beautiful embroidered trim surrounding the edge, these sheets from Garnet Hill look delicate on a bed, lending an almost antique appeal. The sheets are garment washed to enhance softness. Despite their delicate look and feel, the sheets actually proved to be quite strong in our evaluations. The linen material resisted pilling and barely shrunk in our washability tests.
Garnet Hill's sheets can be purchased a set or separately, which is ideal for someone who skips the top sheet (flat sheet).
WHAT USERS SAY: One consumer tester said that these linen sheets felt much softer than the other sets she has tried, but she was happy that they still felt crisp against her skin. Another tester shared, “I am in love with how soft and comfortable the feel is on my bed when I get in; I don’t want to get up.” All our testers said the sheets helped them to maintain a comfortable temperature too, including one who commented “They felt crisp, and I was able to stay cool sleeping."
As for the appearance, one tester shared, "I loved the beautiful detail on the pillowcase and the top of the sheet—it truly looks like old-fashioned needlework like my grandmother did." The sheets are thin and airy, so one tester noted that she was able to see the colorful logos on her mattress and pillow through the bedding.

Pros
High softness scores
Fabric proved durable in our tests
Great breathability, according to testers
Cons
Wrinkled more easily than other linen sheets
Parachute's linen sheets are highly searched for among online shoppers, and we've found that they live up to the hype—they truly are soft, strong, and breathable. And while the price is high, you can opt to buy each component separately and forego the top sheet or pillowcases and swap out different colors to curate your perfect set. Plus, you can pick pillowcases with a back envelope, side envelope, or regular side closure.
We've tested both the former iteration of these sheets and the latest fabrication in the Lab and have been impressed by both. According to Parachute, the new sheets are even stronger than the previous version, but are just as soft. The sheets also held up during our in-Lab durability tests with minimal shrinkage and excellent strength, though they did have a noticeably wrinkled appearance after washing.
WHAT USERS SAY: When we evaluated the sheets, we were impressed by their softness after just one wash, and so were our testers who gave them high softness scores in a blind comparison of other linen fabrics.
One GH staffer has personally owned a set for over five years and can confirm that they've held up well over time. Another consumer tester described the sheets as "beautifully made" and shared, "They fit my bed perfectly." Testers also said the material felt "breathable," making them ideal for hot sleepers.
RELATED: Parachute vs. Brooklinen
| Material | 100% linen |
| Available sizes | Full, Queen, King, California King |
| Depth | 16 in. |
Pros
Softer than most linen sheets we've tested
Good shrink-resistance
Option to order a free swatch
Cons
Significant wrinkling in our tests
These top-tested sheets are pre-washed for an lived-in feel that one user called "the perfect balance between crisp and soft." The sheets outperformed other sets in our evaluations, earning high comfort and temperature-regulation ratings from testers. Though the sheets are on the more expensive end of the linen sets we've tested, Cultiver lets you request complimentary (free) fabric swatches to try out before you buy (you just pay for shipping).
In our Textiles Lab tests, the material held up well to laundering with barely any shrinkage, but it did show significant creases during our wrinkle-resistance evaluations.
✔️ WHAT USERS SAY: Multiple consumer testers commented on the soft and luxe texture, with one highlighting its airy quality and noting that she doesn't overheat on these like other sheets she's tried. Another shared, "I tend to favor cotton sheets because they are soft, but these linen sheets surprised me. They were so comfortable and soft."

| Available sizes | Twin, Queen, King, California King |
| Depth | 16 in. |

Pros
Performed well in pilling tests
Generous 365-day any-reason return policy
Held up well to repeated washing
Cons
Not the softest linen fabric
An updated version of Brooklinen's best-selling linen sheets, this cozy set has thousands of five-star reviews on the brand's site and performed well in our Lab tests. According to the brand, the sheets are "new and improved" with a heavier weight material that's both stronger and softer than before.
The any-reason return policy for up to 365 days (with a small $9.95 return fee) makes these sheets a great option if you're not 100% sure about investing in linen sheets but still want to give them a try.
Though they weren’t the softest linen sheets, they were very durable and had almost no shrinkage, even after multiple washes. The sheets also resisted major pilling after being rubbed repeatedly by our Martindale abrasion tester.
✔️ WHAT USERS SAY: In the Lab, we especially love how the sides are labeled “long” and “short” (genius!) so there’s less struggling to make your bed. Testers agreed, including one who highlighted, "They were easy to put on the mattress, especially with the tags marking which side went where."
A tester who sleeps hot shared, "My husband raved about these sheets, he said they kept him cool all night long. These sheets have a nice, crisp feel, if you want more body and structure from your sheets, these fit the bill," further adding, "They will be my favorite sheets for summer!" Another tester said she barely felt the top sheet at night, since it was so breathable.

| Depth | 15 in. |
Pros
Unique sizes available
Stood out in tests for strength and durability
Variety of pocket depths and pillowcase designs
Cons
Expensive, even for linen sheets
Unlike most pre-packaged sheets, Linoto lets you build your own customized set. There are lots of options to choose from, like the depth of your fitted sheet—which ranges from a shallow 9-inch option to a super deep-pocket 21-inch version—or whether you want the pillowcase to open at the ends or on the back. Linoto also offers unique sizes like "Olympic" bedding and even European sizing. Beyond that, there are tons of colors to choose from. If you prefer organic, the brand has an organic linen bedding collection for a higher cost.
Linoto is a consistent leader in our tests for its thoughtfully crafted linen bedding, and these sheets didn't disappoint. The fabric is built to last, outperforming other linens we've tested for fabric strength and overall durability.
WHAT USERS SAY: One tester said, "They have a nice weight to them, while still being very breathable. I typically sleep hot and felt very comfortable with these sheets." Another similarly shared, "They were super comfortable and I never felt overheated, and the sheets were cozy."
Just beware that the brand's products may take a little longer to ship because they're manufactured by a small team of craftsmen in the USA—but to us, that makes them worth the wait.

Other linen sheets to consider

BEST COOLING: Pottery Barn's Belgian Linen Sheet Set comes in 40 colors and earned excellent scores in Lab durability tests, though some testers found it a bit wrinkly. It's on the airy side, so it's best for hot sleepers and warm summer nights.
BEST PILL-RESISTANT: Saphyr's Soft Washed Pure Linen Sheet Set garnered top scores in pilling resistance testing (with virtually no changes after 1,000 rubs in the Lab) but the sheets also proved soft and comfortable. They have unfinished edges for a rustic look. Still, their fabric strength scores were a bit low.
BEST ORGANIC: Avocado's Organic Linen Sheets are certified by Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), so the entire manufacturing process (not just the growing of the fiber) follows strict standards. They held up well and kept our testers cool in hot weather, but some found them a bit rough and wrinkly.
How we test sheets

Each year, our analysts rigorously evaluate sheets both in the Textiles Lab and with the help of at-home consumer testers. We have tested over 300 different sheet sets in recent years, including 40 linen and hemp sets.
Here's how we test for the best sheets:

✔️ Shrinkage: To gauge how much a fitted sheet shrinks (or stretches) after laundering, we follow industry standards for measuring its dimensional stability. We mark sheets before laundering and measure after an initial wash and once again after multiple laundering cycles.

✔️ Washability: We assess each set for shrinkage and appearance after laundering. The sheets are repeatedly washed according to their care labels, and they're scored after both the first and fifth wash cycles.

✔️ Wrinkle resistance: After laundering, we take the sheets right from the dryer to a room with specialized lighting to measure creases according to industry standards.

✔️ Fabric strength: Sheet swatches are cut and loaded into a machine, called an Instron, that pulls apart the fabric to measure how much force is needed to break it.

✔️ Pilling resistance: Our abrasion machine rubs swatches together to mimic real-life wear and tear. The swatches are scored for pills according to industry standards throughout a 1,000-rub cycle.

✔️ Softness testing: Our large testing panel feels and rates each fabric for softness and comfort in a blind comparison or through sleep testing in their own homes.
✔️ Consumer testing: Consumer testers try sheets that match their personal preferences over the course of several weeks or months before completing a survey. They rate various criteria like softness, ease of use, temperature regulation, fit, and appearance and share thorough feedback on how the sheets compare to others they've used. They also share any likes, dislikes, or comments about their experience.
What to keep in mind when shopping for linen sheets

✔️ Type of linen: You may see linen sheets referred to as flax; this is because the linen fiber comes from the flax plant. You’ll also sometimes see it labeled as European, Belgian, or French linen, which means the fiber is grown in Belgium or France—even if the fabric isn’t produced there. Both Belgian and French linen are considered premium quality.
✔️ Pre-washing: Some brands will claim their sheets are garment-washed or stone-washed, which refers to a manufacturing process that helps linen feel softer than its original rough texture and therefore more comfortable to sleep on.
✔️ Price: Linen sheets are typically more expensive than cotton or synthetic sheets because of the rarity of the fiber and the arduous manufacturing process. Linen can also be difficult to source as the flax plant can only be grown in certain climates.
✔️ Care instructions: Linen sheets can be machine washed, although some may call for gentle cycle settings. They're also tumble-dry safe, often at low temperatures. Make sure to follow the care label to avoid any damage or shrinkage.
✔️ Return policy: If you're new to linen sheets but still curious to try them out, consider a set with an any-reason return policy.
What are the benefits of linen sheets?

Linen sheets have a distinct look and feel that can work well for hot sleepers or anyone who prefers sustainable materials. Here are the main advantages that make linen sheets worth the splurge:
✔️ Unique texture: Linen is sometimes described as "rough"—especially when compared to the wide range of soft fabrics on the market—but the truth is, the fabric feels luxurious and comfortable, especially for those who don't like silky smooth sheets.
✔️ Relaxed appearance: Linen apparel is a casual and chic staple in the summer, and linen sheets offer the same laidback, breezy look for your bed.
✔️ Breathability: From their hollow-core fibers to their loose weaves, linen sheets allow for excellent airflow that makes them good for summer weather and year-round use for hot sleepers.
✔️ Sustainability: Linen is a natural fiber grown from the flax plant, which requires less water and pesticides than other crops used for textiles (like cotton).
