As a product reviews analyst in the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Care & Cleaning Lab, I regularly test cleaning tools and appliances, including robot mops. For this guide, I evaluated 12 recent models and drew on years of Lab testing to recommend the best robot mops based on cleaning ability, ease of use, smart features, and overall value. With its exceptional mopping performance and accurate navigation, the Roborock Saros 20 Robot Vacuum and Mop is our top pick.
Pros
Can sense and automatically re-mop dirty floors
Demonstrated perfect obstacle avoidance in our tests
Excellent debris pickup on carpeting and bare floors
Cons
Audio feedback from the robot and dock can be loud
BEST FOR DEEP CLEANING ON BOTH HARD FLOORS AND CARPETS
The Roborock Saros 20 achieved the best overall cleaning results in our most recent Lab tests. In debris pickup evaluations, it performed exceptionally well on both carpets and hard floors, removing fine debris, larger particles, and pet hair with impressive consistency. In navigation tests, it maneuvered smoothly around furniture and small obstacles without any collisions.
WHY ITS MOPPING PERFORMANCE STANDS OUT
With automatic remopping enabled, it scrubbed away dried mud and spilled syrup so effectively that the soil patches were completely removed without leaving any sticky residue.
The dock further enhances the experience by washing the mop pads and automatically emptying dry debris into a larger bag after each cleaning session. The app also offers extensive controls for scheduling, room-specific cleaning, and adjusting suction and water levels.
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY
The Saros 20 is packed with features, but I found its default audio prompts and chiming noises to be fairly loud. It’s also a premium-priced model. Still, its combination of excellent cleaning performance, reliable navigation, and advanced automation makes it one of the most capable robot vacuum and mop combos I’ve tested.
| Robot height | 3.14 in. |
| Mopping pad type | Dual spinning mop pads |
| Notable features | Automatic remopping, adaptive cleaning, self-washing dock, obstacle avoidance, room recognition, retractable LiDAR navigation |
| Dry cleaning mode | Vacuuming |

Pros
Cleans up to 1,000 square feet on a single charge
Can be paired with many iRobot vacuums
Square shape gets deep into corners
Cons
Sweeps but doesn't vacuum
BEST FOR SHOPPERS WHO DON’T NEED A VACUUM
Standalone robot mops are increasingly hard to find, but the Braava Jet M6 is a dedicated mopping and sweeping robot, so you don’t have to pay for vacuum features you may not need.
WHY IT’S A GOOD CHOICE FOR HARD FLOORS
The square design helps the Braava Jet M6 reach deep into corners and mop along baseboards. It can also use warm water to help loosen dirt and stains, leaving floors cleaner. When the battery runs low or the water tank is empty, it returns to its dock and resumes cleaning once it’s ready. On a single charge, it can clean up to 1,000 square feet, and the mopping pads are easy to remove when you’re done.
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY
The M6’s dry-cleaning abilities are limited compared with a vacuum-mop combo. If you already own an S, J, I, or 900 series Roomba, you can pair the two so the Braava automatically starts mopping when the vacuum finishes. It can also sweep on its own using disposable electrostatic pads that pick up dust and dry debris, but it won’t dispense water when those pads are installed.
| Robot height | 3.5 in. |
| Mopping pad type | Disposable pads and reusable microfiber pads |
| Notable features | Virtual keep out zones, voice commands with Alexa or Google Assistant, charge and resume, can be programmed to mop after Roomba vacuums |
| Dry cleaning mode | Dry-sweeping |

Pros
Base washes and dries the mopping pads after a cleaning task
Floor cleaning solution is included
Easy-to-use app with robust features
Excelled at cleaning up sticky stains in our Lab tests
Cons
Can only lift mop pad by 7 mm on carpet
BEST FOR AUTOMATIC CLEANING SOLUTION DISPENSING
Unlike some robot mops that require you to mix cleaning solution into the water tank, the L10s has a separate solution compartment built into the charging dock. The bottle automatically dispenses the right amount onto the mopping pads before each cleaning session, so you can simply top off the water tank without waiting for it to empty completely.
WHY IT STANDS OUT FOR EASY MAINTENANCE
In our mopping trials, the L10s noticeably lightened sticky stains after a single pass. When it returns to the base, it automatically empties the bin and washes and dries the mopping pads. It also earned a great score for maneuverability, while its user-friendly app received top marks in our ease-of-use tests. From the app, you can schedule cleanings, adjust water and suction levels, and even view a live feed from the robot’s onboard camera.
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY
The L10s quickly raised its mopping pad when it moved onto our test rug, helping keep it dry. However, the pad lifts just 7 millimeters, which may not be enough clearance for plush carpeting. It also performed surprisingly well at picking up faux pet hair, removing almost all of it from our test rug. After self-emptying, we found no fur left in the dustbin or stuck to the brush roll.

BEST FOR THOROUGH CLEANING AND SMOOTH NAVIGATION
In our Lab tests, the X9 cleared our two-room obstacle course in less than 10 minutes. It successfully navigated around furniture, with just one collision with the small cones we use to simulate toys or other stray items. When mopping, it made a significant impact on dried mud and almost completely removed sticky kitchen messes like chocolate syrup. It also left the hardwood test floor only lightly damp, and it dried quickly after mopping. The self-emptying charging dock also serves as a clean-water reservoir and automatically washes the mopping pads after every cleaning session.
WHY IT’S EASY TO CUSTOMIZE
It offers convenient voice control without requiring an Amazon or Google Assistant device—you can simply say “OK, Yiko” to wake it up. Through the app, you can adjust suction power and the amount of water dispensed, choose one or two cleaning passes, set no-go zones, and create cleaning schedules. Voice prompts also alert you when the mopping pads need cleaning and when a session is complete.
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY
The X9 is pricey, and one consumer tester noted that her unit struggled to climb onto plush bath mats. It otherwise moved smoothly between bare floors and carpeting in our tests.
| Robot height | 3.8 in. |

Pros
Exceptionally quiet during cleaning
Excellent maneuverability around furniture and obstacles
Hot-water mop washing helps keep pads cleaner
Cons
Mop pads only lift 12 mm when vacuuming rugs
BEST WHEN NOISE IS A TOP CONCERN
The Narwal Freo Z10 Turbo impressed me with how quietly it operated during both vacuuming and mopping. Even during self-emptying, which is often one of the loudest parts of the cleaning process, it remained noticeably quieter than many others I’ve tested. That makes it especially appealing for apartments, homes with sleeping children or pets, or anyone who prefers to run a robot while working from home.
WHY IT’S A STRONG CHOICE FOR MIXED SURFACES
The robot performed well in our obstacle course evaluations, navigating around furniture and avoiding most stray objects without major issues. In pickup tests, it earned strong scores on carpets for removing medium and large debris and also handled pet hair effectively. On hard floors, it delivered excellent pickup of smaller debris and good overall cleaning performance.
The Narwal also did an excellent job removing dried dirt and nearly all of our dried clay soil test stains in mopping tests. It also noticeably improved sticky kitchen messes after a cleaning cycle. Conveniently, the base automatically washes the mop pads with hot water, helping reduce maintenance between runs.
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY
The mop pads lift just 12 millimeters when carpet is detected, which is lower than some premium competitors and may not provide enough clearance for plush carpeting. Still, its strong vacuuming and mopping performance, especially its quiet operation, make it a versatile choice for homes with both hard floors and carpet. The automated dock functions and straightforward app also make it relatively easy to maintain.
| Robot height | 4.3 in. |
| Mopping pad type | Dual spinning pads |
| Notable features | Hot-water mop washing, self-emptying dock, obstacle avoidance, Zero Tangling brush, edge-cleaning brush |
| Dry cleaning mode | Vacuuming |

Pros
UV mess detection adjusts cleaning automatically
Spends extra time cleaning heavily soiled areas
App provides live cleaning location updates
Cons
Dock leaked when moved during testing
BEST FOR WHEN YOU NEED TO DIRECT YOUR ROBOT TO MESSIER AREAS
During testing, the Shark detected certain messes and automatically spent more time cleaning heavily soiled areas, helping improve performance on concentrated dirt patches. This made the cleaning process feel more adaptive and reduced the need to manually target especially dirty spots.
WHY IT STANDS OUT FOR PICKUP PERFORMANCE
The robot performed well on both carpets and bare floors, removing most of the fine debris and larger particles I put down. It also handled pet hair effectively and navigated around furniture with minimal collisions during obstacle-course runs. The app was another highlight, allowing me to monitor the robot’s location and cleaning progress in real time, which can be especially useful in larger homes.
The self-emptying dock stores debris between cleaning sessions, while the robot’s automated cleaning adjustments help optimize performance across different floor types.
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY
The dock leaked when I moved it during testing, which could be frustrating if you need to reposition the base. It performed normally during regular use, though, and the combination of smart cleaning behavior, strong pickup, and useful app features makes this a compelling option for shoppers who want more automation without moving into the highest price tier.
| Robot height | 4.1 in. |
| Mopping pad type | Reusable microfiber mopping pad |
| Notable features | PowerDetect dirt sensing, UV Reveal technology, self-emptying dock, live robot location tracking in app, multi-surface cleaning |

How we test robot mops

The Good Housekeeping Institute Home Care & Cleaning Lab has been testing robot vacuums since 2002. It evaluates dozens of new robot vacuum and mop models each year, assessing their cleaning performance and ease of use. In addition to our Lab assessments, we have also collected data from consumer testers who have tried and reviewed models in their own homes.
When we test robot mops, we evaluate how effectively each device cleans up spills, such as sticky jelly and coffee dribbles, applied to test floor panels installed in our Cleaning Lab. We also assess how much moisture it leaves behind on wood, vinyl, and tile floors to determine any potential for water damage. For models with vacuuming capabilities, we follow established industry methods, adapted from the International Electrotechnical Commission and ASTM International, to assess how well they pick up debris from hard floors and carpets.
We see how well the robots pick up debris in a straight line from bare floors and carpets, and we set each model loose in a custom-made two-room testing enclosure with obstacles. We evaluate how much debris each model collects, how long it takes to clean, and how long each battery lasts. We also consider how well each robot can clean under low furniture and around tight corners, how it transitions from hard floors to carpet, and how effectively it climbs small thresholds. For robots that create maps, we evaluate them for accuracy and detail.
In our ease-of-use evaluations, we rate each robot mop's user manual and the ease of using its controls and app. We also consider how long it takes to set up and how difficult maintenance activities are. Consumer testers tell us how easy the robots are to set up and use at home, and whether they would keep using or recommend them.
What to look for when shopping for the best robot mop

Here are some things to keep in mind when picking the best robot mop for your home:
✔️ Dry-sweeping vs. vacuuming: While some robot mops only work for wet cleaning, most you’ll find on the market can do some type of dry cleanup as well. Some can vacuum your floors, and others only sweep using a dry pad. Combo models that double as vacuums will have the added task of emptying the dust bin after cleaning (unless they also have a self-emptying dock). Models that sweep will need the sweeping pads washed or discarded after each use. If your floors are particularly dusty, vacuuming with the device before mopping will yield better results.
✔️ Setup and maintenance: Maintaining a robot mop requires filling and emptying water tanks, removing or replacing the cleaning pads, and charging the robot itself. Some models have features that make upkeep easier. The most hands-off models self-empty into a base that only needs to be emptied every 30 days or more, and some can even wash and dry their mop pads between uses. Most of the new models we’ve tested in the Cleaning Lab come with a QR code on the packaging for easier app setup, too.
✔️ Battery life: We usually recommend models that can run for at least 90 minutes on a single charge. This is especially important if you have a large home. However, most robot mops now recharge and resume cleaning to finish the job if the battery starts to run low mid-cleaning. If a robot can clean quickly, its battery runtime is less important.
✔️ Surface type: While vinyl and tile floors are generally pretty resistant to damage, you have to be more careful with hardwood floors. If you have them, be sure the robot mop you select is well-suited for that surface. Models with hard-bristle brush rolls can scratch floors. Look for a robot with a large, fluffy brush roll, or one made of silicone or rubber. For mopping wood floors, look for a model that lets you adjust the amount of water in the pads.
If your home also has rugs, choose a robot mop that can detect the difference between carpet and bare floors to avoid wetting your carpeting. Many models can lift the mopping pads a bit when they traverse onto carpet, but in homes with thick, plush carpeting, this isn't always enough. Check that the pad lifts sufficiently to keep your carpet dry, or look for an app-enabled model that lets you set no-go zones.
✔️ App integration: Most new robot mops and vacuums can be paired with an app to save maps of your home, set cleaning schedules, or select cleaning modes. Some even let you see what your robot is up to while you are away. While not all robots require one to work, the best features are often only accessible through the app. If you’d prefer not to use an app, look for a model with a remote control, or consider one that lets you start a cleaning task with a button on the robot or its base.
Are robot mops worth it?

Robot mops are worth it for homes with pets or small children, or for anyone who wants to spend less time cleaning floors. They won’t eliminate mopping entirely, but they can help keep floors consistently cleaner between deeper cleanings.
Like any mop, they work best when floors are picked up beforehand. You’ll still need to handle large spills and heavily soiled areas by hand, and if you choose a model that only mops, you’ll need to vacuum or sweep separately.
How to maintain a robot mop

Robot mops require regular maintenance to keep them running smoothly and cleaning effectively. This includes wiping the sensors for accurate navigation and regularly emptying and rinsing the water tank. If you have a combination vacuum and mop, check the brush roll for hair tangles and debris, and clean or replace the filter as needed.
Because robot mops use water, it’s important not to leave damp pads sitting in the machine for long. If your model doesn’t automatically dry its pads, remove them after each cleaning session and wash them if the manufacturer allows. If they aren’t dirty enough to launder, they should at least be rinsed and air-dried after each use to prevent them from becoming musty during storage.
For app-enabled models, turn on automatic updates so your robot has the latest software improvements, which can improve navigation and obstacle avoidance. As always, follow the maintenance instructions in your user manual.
Can you put vinegar in a robot mop?

No, you shouldn’t put vinegar (or anything other than plain water) in a robot mop unless the manufacturer recommends it. Doing so could cause damage to the appliance or your floors and could also void your robot mop’s warranty.
Many brands, including Dreame and Ecovacs, make cleaning solutions specifically formulated for their robot mops. Avoid using other floor cleaners in the water tank unless the manufacturer says they’re safe to use.
