From everyday dust and dirt to scuffs from shoes, furniture, and pet nails, hardwood floors take a lot of wear and tear. The right cleaner can help remove grime and keep floors looking their best without compromising the finish. In the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Care & Cleaning Lab, we evaluate hardwood floor cleaners on stain removal, ease of use, drying time, and more.

Our top picks:

Our testing found that the best hardwood floor cleaners deliver strong cleaning power without leaving behind streaks, residue, or a dull finish. These formulas are specifically designed for hard, surface-finished, or polyurethane-treated floors to break down dirt and grime without harming the protective coating.

      Pros

      • Dissolves tough soil
      • EPA Safer Choice-certified
      • Dries quickly

      Cons

      • Requires a separate mop

Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner quickly cut through sticky test soil and removed shoe scuffs faster than every other hardwood floor cleaner we tested. The ready-to-use spray requires no mixing or dilution—just lightly mist a 3-foot section of the floor at a time, then clean with a separate microfiber pad mop. The fast-drying formula means there’s no need to buff away excess moisture before moving on to the next section, helping minimize the risk of leaving excess water on your floors.

We also like that it’s EPA Safer Choice-certified, meaning it’s made with ingredients proven safer for people and the environment — a plus for homes with kids and pets.

      Pros

      • Erases scuff marks
      • A little goes a long way
      • Can be used on more than floors

      Cons

      • Some users don't like the scent

Murphy Oil Soap is a versatile wood cleaner that impressed us with its ability to tackle scuff marks, sticky soil, and everyday grime. In our tests, it erased scuffs with just a few swipes and removed sticky residue well, though it required a little more scrubbing than Bona to fully clean the area.

The concentrated formula must be diluted with water before use, which also means one bottle goes a long way. Our cleaning pros like that it can be used beyond floors, including on wood cabinets and furniture, making it a great value for whole-home wood care. The signature scent is also a favorite among many fans, but it may be too strong for those with fragrance sensitivities.

The ready-to-use cleaner requires no mixing or dilution and works with refillable spray mops.

The formula is made with plant-based ingredients and is EPA Safer Choice-certified. • Cleaning solution dried quickly without streaks
      • Mop head holds onto dirt
      • Doesn't oversaturate floors
      • Mop headlights help you see the surface you are cleaning

      Cons

      • Will need to replace mop pads, cleaning cartridges, and batteries

This Good Housekeeping Seal holder comes with everything you need to clean wood floors, including the battery-operated mop, cleaning pads, and a lemon-scented solution. In our evaluations, our cleaning expert found the mop easy to use, and the built-in scrubbing strip helped remove stuck-on stains. The pad absorbed and trapped dirt well, while the LED lights made it easier to see the area being cleaned.

The cleaning solution sprays as a fine mist to help prevent oversaturating wood floors, and it dried quickly without leaving streaks. Just keep in mind that the mop requires replacement batteries, pads, and cleaning cartridges once the included supplies run out, and the solution bottle isn’t refillable.

      Pros

      • Large head for faster cleaning
      • Reusable microfiber pad
      • Refillable cleaner cartridge

      Cons

      • Mop pole may be too long for some users

Bona’s all-in-one microfiber spray mop system makes cleaning hardwood floors faster and easier with its oversized mop head, reusable microfiber pad, and refillable cleaner cartridge. In our tests, the mop dispensed an even, wide spray and the long rectangular head maneuvered easily into narrow spaces. Soft, flexible corners helped the mop glide along walls and baseboards to pick up dirt in hard-to-reach areas.

The washable microfiber pad is reusable, and Bona also offers deep-cleaning and dusting pads that work with the same mop for added versatility. We also appreciate that the cleaner cartridge can be refilled with Bona formulas, which helps reduce waste.

The pole includes a second grip section for extra leverage when scrubbing, but the handle may feel too long for shorter users. Bona also makes a more compact, lightweight version of this mop, the Bona Spray Mop Air, which we’ve tested and found delivers similar results in a smaller, easier-to-maneuver design.

      • Fast-drying and leaves no residue behind
      • Large refill requires fewer replacements

      Cons

      • Requires a separate mop

Bona PowerPlus Deep Cleaner Spray is designed for wood floors that need more than a routine cleaning. In our tests, the heavy-duty formula cut through grime and buildup so effectively that it earned a previous Good Housekeeping Cleaning and Organizing Award. One of our Cleaning Lab experts who used it said, “My wood floors were so clean and shiny after using it that they looked like they had been refinished!”

Like Bona’s other wood floor cleaners, this formula requires a mop for application, but its oxygenated, fast-drying formula penetrates tough messes without leaving residue behind. It’s also EPA Safer Choice-certified, and the 128-ounce refill size helps reduce plastic waste when it’s time to restock.

How we test hardwood floor cleaners

      best hardwood floor cleaners
      Jillian Sollazzo

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Care & Cleaning Lab, we’re continuously testing floor cleaning essentials like vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaners, and vacuum mops.

To evaluate hardwood floor cleaners, we tested 24 products on real wood planks, measuring how well they removed 216 total sticky, dried-on stains and scuff marks. For our cleaning tests, we apply a precise amount of a sticky gelatin mixture to hardwood planks and create scuff marks with a rubber shoe heel. We then evaluate how much soil each product removes after an equal number of passes, as well as how many passes are needed to completely erase scuffs and stains.

We also assess ease of application, drying time, and any residue left behind. All product labels are reviewed for proper safety instructions and precautionary notices.

What to look for when shopping for the best hardwood floor cleaner

      double line break

✔️ Type: Hardwood floor cleaners come as sprays, concentrated liquids, and spray mops. In our tests, all the products we evaluated removed at least some stains and scuffs, regardless of format. That said, sprays and spray mops performed best in our ease-of-use tests, since they require no dilution and can be applied directly to floors.

✔️ Versatility: Some wood cleaners can be used beyond floors, including on furniture and woodwork. A versatile option like our best-value pick, Murphy Oil Soap, is especially useful in homes with many wood surfaces to clean.

✔️ Scent: Since you’ll likely use these cleaners throughout your home, choose a fragrance you enjoy. Some formulas have strong signature scents, while others offer lighter or unscented options.

How do I keep my hardwood floors clean and shiny?

      double line break

Keep hardwood floors clean and shiny by vacuuming regularly, cleaning spills right away, and using a hardwood floor cleaner only when needed. Leave shoes at the door, trim pets’ nails, and use a straight-suction vacuum or turn off the rotating brush to avoid scratching the finish.

When wet-cleaning, apply a light amount of cleaner in small 3-foot sections and let each area dry before moving on. Too much moisture can damage wood floors over time. For routine touch-ups, clean in the direction of the planks; for deeper cleaning, go both with and across the grain to remove dirt trapped in the seams. Avoid overwashing, as frequent wet cleaning can do more harm than good.

What should you not use to clean a wood floor?

      double line break

Avoid vinegar, steam mops, abrasive cleaners, waxes, oils, furniture sprays, and ammonia-based products when cleaning wood floors. Although vinegar is often recommended as a DIY cleaner, its acidity can dull the finish over time. Steam mops can also damage hardwood by forcing excess moisture into the floor, which may cause warping.

Because wood is sensitive to water, humidity, and temperature changes, use a cleaner specifically formulated for hardwood floors and avoid anything that can strip or scratch the finish.
