No one likes a messy closet—clothes falling off hangers, items piled on the floor, and overflowing drawers can make it impossible to find what you need in a hurry. Installing a closet system or kit will help you get organized, whether you have a tiny closet or a spacious walk-in.

We researched and tested several closet organization systems, considering key factors such as materials, durability, style, and ease of installation. Over the years, the Good Housekeeping Institute has tested various systems from popular brands, such as The Container Store and Rubbermaid. When testing wasn't possible, we relied on trusted brands and scoured online reviews to compile reliable and versatile options.

Consider one of these freestanding or wall-mounted closet kits—all of which can be adjusted or customized to fit your space. Keep in mind: you can assemble most of these picks yourself, but others may require professional installation.

Pros

  • Highly customizable
  • Materials feel durable and solid, according to GH testers
  • Looks sleek and modern when installed

Cons

  • Installation is involved; professional help is recommended

The Container Store's iconic Elfa closet system got a modern makeover with even more customization—so we had to try it out. Personalize this wall-mounted system with birch wood, soft-close drawers, LED lighting, and an array of new accessories.

The system is well-designed, highly customizable, and looks polished once installed, according to one tester. The modular setup helped to maximize space and allowed for flexibility as needs change (users appreciate the option to add on accessories later).

We found the system to be durable and supportive; according to the brand, the wire shelves can support up to 100 pounds per foot. The only con? Installation is not beginner-friendly. While the end result is worth it, the process requires careful measuring, proper tools, and a good level of DIY confidence. If your budget allows, we suggest hiring a professional to install it.

Pros

  • Easy to assemble, according to online reviewers
  • Supportive; each shelf can hold up to 100 pounds
  • Inexpensive

Cons

  • Not super customizable
  • Some online reviewers wish it was taller

This adjustable closet rack is a great option for budget shoppers and renters, as it requires no mounting. Although we haven't personally tested this freestanding closet system, we scoured the 16,000 Amazon reviews for insight into this affordable option. Most found the system sturdy (even years later), easy to assemble, and capable of holding a lot.

"These shelves honestly exceeded my expectations," writes one online reviewer. "They are sturdy, easy to assemble, customizable, and honestly perfect for my needs." The two hanging rods can be adjusted in one-inch increments, so it's customizable to a certain extent. There are also 10 adjustable-height shelves that hold up to 100 pounds each.

Pros

  • Can be reconfigured fairly easily
  • Held up well to stains and scratches in testing
  • Customer service was very helpful in handling inquiries

Cons

  • The manual is helpful, but the installation process required trial and error
  • Bracketing may not be as sturdy as you would expect

This durable closet system can be configured and adjusted to fit a variety of spaces. There are two sizes: one that accommodates spaces between 4 and 6 feet wide, and another that expands from 5 to 8 feet. One of our testers raved about the versatility: "I liked that the system required minimal tools and is adjustable for easy reconfiguration to suit needs."

During testing, the vinyl-coated steel shelving successfully resisted rust, stains, and scratches, though some users found it wasn't as sturdy as expected. It attaches to the wall using a track system and brackets, but our experts suggest additional brackets for extra support.

Keep in mind that assembly might require some trial and error, as the shelves need to be placed in a specific order. Luckily, you can contact ClosetMaid's customer service team for assistance with any issues. We recommend visiting HomebyAmes.com to use its DIY design tool. For an extra $5, you can obtain custom design plans from a ClosetMaid specialist.

With just a few basic tools, I was able to set up the shelves in no time at all." It comes in two versatile finishes—satin bronze and white—to match a variety of aesthetics and offers two hanging rods for clothing, plus eight adjustable shelves for shoes. If you're on the taller side, you might find that the hanging bars aren't high enough, according to one online reviewer.

How we test closet systems

line break

We narrowed down the options by focusing on basic setups with hanging space, several shelves, and space for storing shoes. For options that we weren't able to test in our Lab, we relied heavily on our knowledge of the brands and scoured online reviews. Our final selections were based on the following criteria:

✔️ Durability: Because durability matters, we dropped each closet system's shelving from three feet in the air to see if it could withstand scratches. We also evaluated how well each system held up to stains by applying lipstick, oil, ink, and soda to the surfaces (an hour was allotted to complete this portion of the test).

✔️ Ease of installation: A panel of consumers was invited to assemble each closet system onto a wall in our Labs. As the consumers completed the installation process, they freely shared feedback on their experience, construction skills, and helpfulness of the manuals. Our experts also considered the number of products each system included and the ease of changing the configuration over time.

✔️ Style and quality: Finally, our consumer testers were asked to provide their take on each system's visual appeal and construction quality, along with how well the pieces fit together.

What to consider when buying a closet system

linebreak

There's no shortage of closet systems to choose from right now, so here's what to keep in mind when you're shopping for the best option:

✔️ Budget: A disorganized closet can contribute to increased stress, which may be worth the extra money to you. But if designing a custom closet isn't in your budget, closet organizers can be an effective, inexpensive way to free up closet space, and make it easier to find the things you need.

✔️ Type: Wall-mounted closet systems are screwed to the studs in the wall, and tend to be more inexpensive than floor-mounted designs that can be finished with decorative base and crown moldings for a more high-end look. Freestanding systems, as their name suggests, are not designed to be fixed to walls. They're portable and ideal for narrow or small spaces.

✔️ Installation: Every closet system is different when it comes to the installation process. Generally, track/bracket systems are easier to install than floor-mounted systems. It's also worth noting that some systems require at least two people to complete the assembly.

How much does a closet system cost?

linebreak

If you don't mind the extra effort, installing a closet system yourself can be worth it, since DIY closet kits are a more budget-friendly option than hiring a professional service. They can also be easily customized to fit your specific needs. The good news is that there are a slew of closet systems across different price points. You can find systems ranging from $100 to $1,500 or more.
