T-shirts have a way of piling up over the years. You have your college tees, the shirt from that 5K a few years ago, those band t-shirts you can't quite part with, and so on. If it's time to make room in your closet, you don't have to throw them out. Here's how to give your old t-shirts a second life, according to Tanjuria Willis, founder of Atlanta Sustainable Fashion Week.

If you know how to sew, there are tons of creative projects you can make with your old t-shirts. But even if you don't have sewing skills, there are plenty of ways to upcycle your shirts. Some of the clever no-sew ideas Willis shared with us include cutting your shirts up to use as cleaning rags, transforming them into hair accessories, or tying a few knots and turning them into sustainable tote bags.

Another approach, if you're feeling crafty: Make "yarn" with your old t-shirts and grab your crochet hook or knitting needles. You can make a plant hanger, a rug, or any other fiber art projects.

Keep reading for plenty of creative ideas for upcycling your old t-shirts.

One of the best things you can do is turn your pile of old T-shirts into a quilt that shows your personality. “Cut the shirts into equal squares, sew them together, and back the finished piece with soft flannel or fleece,” says Willis. “Not only is it a smart way to recycle T-shirts, but it’s a cozy way to preserve some of your favorite memories.”

Create a throw pillow

“You can turn a T-shirt into a throw pillow using either a sewing or a no-sew method,” suggests Willis. “For the sewing version, cut matching squares from the front and back, stabilize them with interfacing, and stitch the edges together, leaving an opening for the pillow fill before closing it. For a no-sew option, use fusible webbing to seal the sides and create an opening in the back for a pillow insert.”

For low-effort hair days or a headband on washdays, an old T-shirt can be a perfect scrunchie or headband. “Stretchy cotton jersey is ideal for DIY hair accessories,” suggests Willis. “Cut the shirt into long strips, braid or twist them, and tie off the ends. Upcycled headbands are gentle on your hair, easy to make, and endlessly customizable.”

Want to turn up the style on your weekend errand runs? Take a T-shirt (or two) and turn it into a stylish tote bag. “With just a few snips and knots, an old T-shirt becomes a stylish tote with no sewing required,” says Willis. “Cut off the sleeves and neckline, tie the bottom hem in knots, and you’ve got an instant grocery or gym bag that’s washable and waste-free.”

If you have a few T-shirts beyond repair, save money (and the environment) by upcycling them into cleaning rags around the house. “Cut your T-shirts into 10-inch squares for reusable, lint-free rags that work great on mirrors, stainless steel, and electronics,” Willis advises. “They’re soft, absorbent, and washable, and the ultimate eco-swap for your cleaning routine.”

For pet owners wanting to make a memorable pet toy, a few old T-shirts can do the trick. “Your furry friends will love this one,” Willis says. “Braid together strips of old T-shirts into a sturdy tug toy. The cotton is soft on teeth, and the toy is easy to wash when it gets slobbery.”

Whether you have indoor or outdoor plants, you can get crafty and make a macrame-style plant hanger to spruce up your plant holders. “Cut several long strips from your T-shirt and tie them into a simple macramé pattern to cradle a small plant pot,” Willis shares. “The stretchy fabric gives it a relaxed, boho vibe and adds a handmade touch to any corner of your home.”
