If you’re looking to add a dog to your family, it’s important to find one that matches your lifestyle. Each dog has their own personality, of course, but certain breeds are known to be especially easygoing, making them a sensible choice for seniors. With the help of the American Kennel Club, we’ve identified some of the best dog breeds for seniors.

While all dogs need exercise, these breeds don’t need to run for miles and miles every day to be happy. Many of them have low- to moderate exercise needs. And when you’re done with your walk around the neighborhood, these dogs are generally happy to curl up by your side and cuddle on the couch. Additionally, most of these dogs are relatively small, so you don’t have to worry about them dragging you down the sidewalk when they spot a squirrel.

In addition to learning about breeds, it’s also worth speaking with staff at an animal shelter or a breeder to get a sense of which type of dog might be right for you. Some dogs will be thrilled to join you on your weekend hiking trips or long drives to see the grandkids, while others will be happiest with an owner who spends most of their time cozied up at home.

Ahead, learn more about the best dog breeds for seniors.
