If you’re looking to add a dog to your family, there are several factors to consider. But one of the most important things to keep in mind is how a new dog will get along with any pets you already have, including cats. After referencing the American Kennel Club's recommendations, we’ve rounded up the most cat-friendly dog breeds.

These dog breeds tend to have lower prey drives, so it’s less likely their instinct will be to chase the cat around the house. Many of these breeds are also known to be easygoing, making it more likely that they’ll get along with other pets (especially if you also happen to have a dog-friendly breed of cat).

At the end of the day, each animal has its own personality. Even a dog belonging to a generally mellow breed may clash with certain cats. Luckily, with the proper training and socialization, it’s often possible for dogs and cats to coexist under the same roof. You can also speak to staff at the animal shelter or the breeder (depending on where you’re getting your dog) to help you find one that’s more likely to be comfortable around cats.

Ahead, learn more about the most cat-friendly dog breeds to consider.

These goofy dogs love to sit on the couch. Their lower energy level and chill personalities make them a good fit to get along with independent cats who wouldn’t enjoy a higher energy pup in their personal space. In fact, you might catch them taking a nap on the couch together.

Beagles were bred to work together in a pack as hunting dogs. That typically makes them friendly and sociable to other animals. Although beagles do tend to have a high prey drive, with proper socialization, it shouldn't be a problem. You can also consider the size of the two, if they are about equal in size, the beagle will likely see the cat as one of their own.
