After testing 34 different laptop backpacks in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, the Timbuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe is our top recommendation: a sturdy, easy-on-the-shoulders option with ample padding to keep your tech secure. For a more affordable option, the Matein Laptop Backpack packs in plenty of useful pockets for around $20. Whether you’re bringing your laptop to class, the office, or on vacation, I found the best laptop backpacks for both women and men, assessing laptop fit, abrasion resistance, comfort when carrying, and more.

Our top picks:

Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe

Pros

  • Spacious, sturdy laptop compartment
  • Organized interior with multiple pockets
  • Comfortable, padded straps
  • Suitable for larger laptops

Cons

  • Limited color options

When commuting with heavier loads, this Timbuk2 backpack is comfortable to carry, thanks to the chest strap and padded straps and back. It has a luggage sleeve and a top handle, making this a great travel bag too. The exterior is water-resistant nylon, which held up well against rubbing and wear in our abrasion tests. Note that it’s only available in darker colors like black, blue, and gray.

Its sturdy laptop compartment keeps your tech safe and can even fit laptops up to 17 inches. Consumer testers especially liked how protective this compartment felt with one saying, “My laptop feels safe and solid and secure in there, something I appreciate as a commuter.” He also added, “I like that it has four separate compartments so I can keep my things organized.”

Pros

  • Lightweight materials
  • Helpful features like an anti-theft back pocket and two water bottle holders
  • Spacious interior with plenty of compartments and pockets

Cons

  • Bag doesn't keep its shape when not full

After testing laptop backpacks for the past eight years in the Textiles Lab, I’ve never seen a quality laptop backpack more affordable than this Matein one, starting at just $20. It has padded shoulder straps, a spacious interior with plenty of organizational pockets, two water bottle holders, and an anti-theft back pocket, which is especially helpful when traveling.

I brought this backpack on a trip to test it firsthand and was impressed with just how lightweight it was at just over a pound and a half, even though it doesn’t keep its shape as well as other packs I’ve tested and it would flop over when not filled up. The spacious interior held everything I needed and my laptop fit securely in the padded sleeve. I tested the version that fits laptops up to 15.6 inches, but the brand also offers larger bags that can fit laptops up to 17 and 18 inches (the larger bags are only sold in limited color options).

  • Classic look with convenient front pockets
  • Padded straps are comfortable

Cons

  • Best suited for younger students as it can only hold laptops up to 15 inches

Iconic and reliable, the JanSport backpack has been the classic choice for students for decades. The suede bottom is stylish, but it also adds reinforcement to help prevent tearing. The backpack’s design is simple but includes key components like easy-access front pockets, comfy padded straps, and a laptop sleeve, although it can only fit 15-inch laptops so the bag might be better suited for younger kids.

Consumer testers loved using this bag with their kids, with one saying, “It's easy to keep organized” and that she “loves the various colors it comes in.” Available in more than 20 colors including bold patterns, neutrals, and brights, there’s an option for students of all styles.

Cascade Backpack

Pros

  • Fits within most airlines' size restrictions for a personal item
  • Wide wire-frame opening helps accommodate bulkier items
  • Helpful travel features like a luggage sleeve and hidden back pocket

Cons

  • Can only fit smaller laptops

“It’s super spacious, and the shape of the top makes it really easy to access everything inside,” shared a consumer tester who loved using this Portland Gear backpack as a personal item when flying since it fits within most airlines’ size restrictions. “It fit perfectly under the airline seat and was easy to grab by the top handle.” When I packed this bag in the Lab, I was impressed by just how much I could fit in it, thanks to the extra-wide wire-frame opening.

One GH editor said this is her go-to travel bag because she loves the hidden back pocket for her passport and the luggage trolley sleeve. The brand notes that it can only fit laptops up to 11 inches, but I found that it fit my 13-inch laptop easily. On Amazon, it’s available in six colors, but there are about 20 color options of the brand’s website.

Borealis Backpack

Pros

  • Held up to abrasion, drop, and water-resistance testing
  • College students liked the versatile design
  • Padded straps and back panel

Cons

  • Can be top-heavy when fully packed and not stay upright

Our Textiles experts have been impressed with the Borealis backpack from The North Face for over 10 years. It stayed in great condition after abrasion and drop testing in the Lab and it can stand up to the wear and tear of everyday use. The exterior fabric proved water-resistant in our evaluations, so it will keep your belongings dry even if you get caught in the rain. When I filled this backpack with items during our packing test, it fit everything easily, but it did become a bit top-heavy when fully packed and would sometimes topple over.

Our survey respondents who are college students loved how versatile The North Face backpacks are, with many saying they wear them for activities like hiking, traveling, going to classes, and teaching. We love the padded straps that offer extra comfort and the padded mesh back panel to help with breathability against your back. College students especially liked the stretchy water bottle holders on each side that accommodate even larger bottles.

How we test laptop backpacks

emma seymour loads samples into the wyzebeck abrasion tester to evaluate fabric durability to find the best travel backpacks
LEXIE SACHS

When we test backpacks in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, we evaluate each product's durability through water-resistance and abrasion tests (pictured above) to make sure they can stand up to wear and tear during hard use. We measure the weight of each bag and how much each can hold, plus we assess strap padding and organizational components. In our most recent test, we evaluated 34 different backpacks to make these selections.

To find the best backpack features, we also surveyed backpack users to learn more about what they specifically look for when shopping as well as their recommendations for current popular picks. We then checked out these styles for ourselves, wearing them on our commutes, paying close attention to how a laptop fit and how protected it felt. We also analyzed the construction of each backpack in the Lab. Lastly, we considered feedback from our consumer testers regarding their experience wearing backpacks, including how comfortable they felt during everyday use.

What to look for when shopping for the best laptop backpacks

linebreak

✔️ Laptop compartment: First and foremost, your laptop backpack has to properly fit your laptop. Laptop backpacks include built-in padded laptop sleeves, which offer extra protection than your typical backpack while traveling or commuting. Make sure the laptop sleeve can accommodate your laptop's size before purchasing, especially if you have a larger computer.

✔️ Comfort: A laptop adds weight to your pack, so you'll want to make sure the backpack is comfortable to carry for long periods of time. Look for comfort features like padded straps and mesh back paneling for breathability. If you suffer from back pain, I recommend looking for chest straps that help distribute the weight, making it even more comfortable.

✔️ Size: Avoid carrying multiple bags by opting for a backpack that's big enough to hold your entire load. Some backpacks include water bottle holders, shoe compartments, and zippered pockets to keep everything neatly organized.

✔️ Material: Since many people commute with either their personal computer or a work-issued laptop, keeping it safe is a top priority. Opt for waterproof or water-resistant materials for extra protection in inclement weather.
