In the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen & Cooking Lab, an air fryer is almost always running. Since the first models hit the market more than a decade ago, my colleagues and I have tested at least 70 air fryers in the Lab and at home. Needless to say, we have strong opinions about what makes a great air fryer, and plenty of experience with the best (and yes, some disappointing) models.

Our top picks:

The best small air fryers are great for cooking for one to two people. They heat incredibly quickly, maintain an even temperature, and produce wonderfully crisp results that a microwave can't come close to. After running the top models through our exhaustive Lab tests and gathering feedback from real-world users, the Ninja AF101 Air Fryer stands out as the top performer.

Pros

  • Includes versatile settings
  • Easy to use and clean

Cons

  • Not as compact as some of the other small air fryers on our list

WHO IT’S BEST FOR: This is a great choice for small households who want to cook food efficiently without sacrificing kitchen real estate.

This is the little sibling of the Ninja Air Fryer Max XL, another air fryer we love. It offers many of the same features, including settings for air fry, roast, reheat, and dehydrate.

It’s also very easy to operate, with a clear control panel and highly responsive buttons. The basket slides in and out smoothly, and its nonstick coating makes cleanup quick. It fits comfortably in most dishwashers, though it’s slightly larger than the other small air fryers on our list.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN TESTING: This machine heated quickly and produced crispy and nicely browned chicken wings and fries.

Senior Director of the Kitchen Lab Nicole Papantoniou has used this air fryer at home for over a year, and she’s a big fan. She especially loves that the drawer fits in her dishwasher without taking up too much room, and the machine is the right size for her apartment kitchen.

One note: The air fryer doesn’t stop operating if you open the basket, so if you check your food during cooking, the timer and heat will continue.

Pros

  • Made crispy fries, wings, and mozzarella sticks that were evenly cooked
  • Straightforward control panel

Cons

  • Nonstick air fryer basket can scratch over time

WHO IT’S BEST FOR: Shoppers looking for a great deal on an easy-to-operate machine.

Cosori makes great air fryers that are easy to use and don't come with a hefty price tag. This 2-quart model has a nonstick square basket, a removable tray, and a sleek, intuitive control panel. We like that when the air fryer is off, the buttons are hidden for a more streamlined look in your kitchen.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN TESTING: Our fries, wings, and mozzarella sticks came out evenly cooked and crisp. The wings, in particular, were very juicy and even crisp on the bottom without needing to be flipped (we can't say the same for several other air fryers we tested).

The crinkle-cut frozen fries came out nicely golden, with a few darker, crispy edges. They were fluffy in the center, not dried out. One downside to keep in mind: Some Cosori baskets we've used have scratched over the years, so we recommend avoiding metal utensils and handwashing when possible.

Best Small Air Fryer Toaster Oven

Pros

  • More cooking space than most basket-style models for better crisping and browning
  • Easy to use control panel

Cons

  • Minimal features; does not have a timer

WHO IT’S BEST FOR: If you have a little more countertop space and want a versatile machine that can also toast, choose the Cuisinart model.

The larger version of this model from Cuisinart is our top-tested air fryer toaster oven. It cooks quickly and is one of the only air fryer toaster ovens we tested that can compete with both a standalone air fryer and toaster oven.

This smaller version is a fraction of its size, costs less, and holds more food than you’d think. It’s deep rather than wide and can air fry up to 2.5 pounds of food, according to the brand’s website. In our tests, we easily fit 1 pound of wings inside with room to spare, as well as a pound of fries in a single layer, which most small basket-style air fryers can’t do.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN TESTING: It browned both the wings and fries well and quickly. At 400°F, the wings turned golden and juicy in 20 minutes, and the fries were deeply browned in 15 minutes, though they came out a little drier than we’d prefer. A 2-inch piece of salmon came out tender and flaky with crisped skin. Even our grilled cheese crisped up nicely with a melty, gooey center.

The mechanical dials make it easy to program, but the air fryer lacks a timer.

Pros

  • Compact footprint with a large capacity
  • Sleek, modern design
  • Large temperature range

Cons

  • Touchscreen takes some getting used to
  • Basket is not dishwasher-safe

WHO IT’S BEST FOR: Single-person households and kitchens where aesthetics are paramount.

The Bella Slim Air Fryer looks great in any kitchen. Its slim, compact footprint works well in small spaces, but the square air fryer basket offers an impressive 4-quart capacity. This appliance comes in five attractive colors, including a neutral oat and a creamy pink.

The air fryer has a labeled touchscreen control panel that has a slight learning curve (you have to turn the machine on, then press the time button to choose your setting, then repeat the process for temperature). It has six cooking modes: air fry, bake, roast, broil, dehydrate, and reheat. We also appreciate its wide temperature range, from 170°F to 400°F, which is our preferred temperature for wings, fries, and mozzarella sticks.

The built-in cooking timer goes up to 60 minutes, which is sufficient for most air fryer recipes.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN TESTING: The Bella Air Fryer produced juicy wings that were slightly crispier on top when cooked without flipping. The mozzarella sticks were crispy and golden, and the frozen fries were too.

Heads up: The basket is not dishwasher-safe.

Crispi Air Fryer
Credit: Jillian Sollazzo

Pros

  • More portable than other air fryers
  • Glass container lets you watch the cooking progress

Cons

  • You can’t select a specific temperature, only a range

WHO IT’S BEST FOR: Meal preppers and people who like to keep an eye on their food while it cooks.

We trust Ninja to make quality countertop appliances that do multiple jobs, and the Crispi air fryer is no exception. The system comes with two containers: A 4-quart and a 6-cup glass bowl. The heating element attaches directly to the top of each container, making it more portable than other countertop appliances.

It comes in several colors, including a bright cobalt and a deep green. The larger container can comfortably accommodate a pound of wings, while the smaller bowl is great for a single serving.

You can’t select a specific temperature on the Ninja Crispi. Instead, it works in temperature ranges, which makes this a better option for reheating food than following a specific recipe. That said, it’s more portable than other air fryers we tested, so if you’re looking for a tool to crisp up your lunch at the office or bring on the road, this is a great choice.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN TESTING: This machine produced an incredibly gooey and melty grilled cheese that was fairly crisp on both sides. The wings and fries were both moist and tender inside, if not the crispest or darkest. We also appreciate that you can heat two items simultaneously, such as rice at the bottom of the bowl and chicken on a rack above.

  • Dash Compact Air Fryer: Dash's small air fryer is a solid compact option for one to two people. However, we found the basket a little too small, and it doesn't have as many cooking modes as our picks above.
  • Dash Digital Tasti-Crisp Air Fryer 2.6 Qt.: This air fryer has a minimal footprint, but its small basket made flipping food difficult, and it didn’t crisp or brown food as well as expected.
  • Dash Tasti-Crisp Infrared Air Fryer: Infrared heat makes this model faster than other air fryers, but the basket feels cramped.
  • Laura Ashley 4.75-quart Air Fryer: Cottagecore fans will love this floral air fryer's design, but it didn’t produce the crispy results we expected during testing.
  • Our Place Wonder Oven: Our Place's model is a cute, retro-style air fryer toaster oven, but we found the controls difficult to use and noticed a slight chemical smell when it heated.
  • Philips 2000 Series Air Fryer 4.2 L: This air fryer has an impressive 13 cooking functions and performed well in our tests for crispy, even browning. However, it has a smaller basket than our top picks.

How we test small air fryers

line break

In the Kitchen Lab, we’ve tested over 70 air fryers of all shapes and sizes. We evaluate their ease of use and how well they cook foods that home cooks typically prepare in an air fryer.

✔️ Wings and fries tests: We air fry frozen fries and chicken wings to see how quickly they cook and how evenly browned and crisp they get. We also evaluate how moist and tender the food comes out.

✔️ Grilled cheese and mozzarella stick tests: We air fry grilled cheese sandwiches and frozen mozzarella sticks to assess how evenly the machines melt cheese and produce a gooey, cheese-pull-worthy result with a crispy exterior. This test also shows whether the fan is so strong that it blows food around inside the basket.

✔️ Ease of use: We evaluate each model’s control panel and buttons, including cooking modes, temperature settings, alerts, and how easy it is to move the basket or trays. Finally, we consider how easy the machine and its parts are to clean and maintain.

What to look for when shopping for small air fryers

line break

✔️ Size: Average air fryers have a capacity of around 6 quarts. They can fit enough food for about four people at a time. The small air fryers on our list hold 2 to 4 quarts. They’re great for one or two people and require less counter space. We also find them easier to clean since the smaller baskets often fit in a dishwasher. Here’s how to deep-clean your appliance to help it run smoothly.

✔️ Style: Small air fryers come in basket- and toaster oven-style. Basket styles are great for smaller ingredients that benefit from shaking, while toaster ovens have trays with a larger cooking surface to hold more food in a single layer. This can produce better browning and crisping. Toaster oven trays are also a little easier to flip food on, since they have shorter walls. Air fryer toaster ovens also offer more versatility since they can bake, toast, and more, like a standard countertop oven.

✔️ Mechanical vs. digital display: Air fryers with dials rather than a digital display cost less than their counterparts. They work perfectly well, but are often less precise. They also typically have fewer bells and whistles, such as preprogrammed settings and halfway timers that remind you to flip your food.

✔️ Settings: Often, when an air fryer offers an extensive range of settings, it includes programs with preset times and temperatures for commonly air-fried foods. Usually, you can adjust these settings further. They can be helpful if you’re new to air frying, but the more you use your appliance, the easier it will be to use the manual function. Another thing to keep in mind is that settings often indicate how low or high an air fryer can go. For example, a dehydrate setting might mean the air fryer can cook at 100°F or less. Keep warm is usually around 200°F, air fry typically maxes out around 400°F, and roast or broil is usually higher.

What can you fit in a small air fryer?

line break

Round air fryer baskets offer less cooking area than square ones. Based on testing, a 2-quart air fryer can fit two to three chicken thighs snugly. You can also pile in a pound of fries, though 8 ounces yields more consistently crisp results. You can fit at least a pound of wings, which is about 10 pieces. Square baskets can fit a little more and offer more room to spread ingredients out for better airflow.

The product description often provides a good indication of the food capacity, but we recommend consulting the user guide for recommended amounts.
