A great washing machine should do more than just clean your clothes. The best one fits your space, matches your routine, care for fabrics over time, and is simple to use day to day. While top-loaders may have their strengths, front-loading machines tend to be more flexible when it comes to placement. You can often stack them with a dryer to save space, or slide them under cabinets or countertops—something that’s much harder to do with a top-loader since it needs room to open from above.

Our top picks:

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Care & Cleaning Lab, we've been testing washing machines and dryers for over a century, and as a product reviews analyst in the Lab, I've tested more than 20 in the past two years alone. To figure out which washing machine models are best, I put them through a battery of tests to determine how well they clean and care for fabric, how easy they are to use, and more. I also pore over water- and energy-efficiency specs and score them too. The front-loaders in this list came out on top, striking the balance between performance and efficiency.

Front Load HE Stackable Smart Washer

Pros

  • Has a bright drum light
  • Very fast cycle times
  • Control panel is easy to use

Cons

  • Rougher on clothes than some other machines

With its generously sized drum, short cycle times, and sleek steel finish, this LG was impressive all around. It washed clothes more quickly than any other unit I’ve tested, taking just 16 minutes for small loads on the Quick cycle and finishing full-size loads on the Normal setting in a little over half an hour.

Although it races through laundry, that doesn’t mean it isn’t thorough. It demonstrated excellent cleaning performance in soil-removal tests. It wasn’t particularly rough on fabric either, but it still wasn’t as gentle as some other machines I’ve evaluated.

Similar to many other machines, the control panel has a dial in the center for selecting cycles. Unlike other machines, though, the dial displays the cycle name and a helpful description on a small screen in its center. The unit also has a pretty bright drum light, which made it easy to see and retrieve test items from the back of the drum. With its large capacity and exceptional speed, this machine would be a great fit for households with a lot of laundry and a need to get it done quickly.

Smart Front Load Washer with FreshFlow

Pros

  • Exceptional cleaning performance
  • Affordable
  • Has an antimicrobial coating to help prevent odors

Cons

  • Cycle times are longer than average
  • Doesn't have a drum light

Even though this Whirlpool is the cheapest on our list, it’s still packed with premium features. It can automatically adjust wash settings based on soil level, has helpful extras like a Dry Drum cycle, and lightens stains more effectively than any other unit I’ve tested to date. With a 4.5-cubic-foot drum, it’s also pretty accommodating for larger loads of laundry.

An antimicrobial coating on the door gasket helps prevent musty smells and mildew, and the Dry Drum cycle also helps keep the machine clean and odor-free. In addition to its impressive stain removal, this model also earned solid scores for fabric care. The delicate, plain-weave swatches we used for testing gentleness showed minimal damage after washing. The machine also removed excess water from our test items effectively and was easy to use.

I did notice that this model doesn’t have a drum light, which I missed when trying to spot small items at the back of the machine. Most wash cycles also took over an hour to complete, making it one of the slower units I’ve tested. If you’re not in a rush, this machine’s powerful cleaning ability and low-maintenance setup make it a worthwhile pick.

Best Energy-Efficient

Speed Queen FF7

Credit: Speed Queen

Pros

  • Great efficiency
  • Solid performance
  • Five-year warranty

Cons

  • No smart features or app connectivity
  • Smaller capacity

Speed Queen is known for its reliability, and this unit comes with a five-year warranty to back it up. I’ve tested a handful of Speed Queen washers and dryers with great results, and this model definitely lives up to the name. The FF7 is one of the fastest machines I’ve tested, and it earned top scores for energy efficiency, too. The estimated yearly energy cost to run it is just $8.

When I tested this machine, it proved to be an effective cleaner while still being gentle on fabric. Its final spin also removed more water from our test loads than any other standalone front-loader I’ve seen, which could go a long way toward saving time and energy when drying. It reliably washed a typical 8-pound load in just 39 minutes. I was even able to clean a 12-pound load of laundry in the 3.5 cubic-foot drum with good results, but it was a tight fit.

Note that, unlike many of today’s front-loaders, this machine lacks smart features or app connectivity for remote laundry management, though these features are often unused. The FF7 is a great fit for people who prioritize performance above extra features, though households accustomed to washing oversize loads may need to adjust their habits.

Bespoke AI Laundry Vented Combo

Pros

  • Excelled in our cleaning performance tests
  • Cycle times rival traditional machines
  • Large capacity

Cons

  • Only has a bulk detergent dispenser
  • Drying temperatures can be a little high

Samsung’s Bespoke AI All-in-One Vented Combo shows that a combination laundry appliance can save space without sacrificing speed or cleaning power. It earned excellent scores for both washing and drying, and it’s the fastest combo I’ve ever tested. Thanks to its vented drying system, cycle times rival those of traditional, standalone machines, and its large 5.3-cubic-foot drum makes it especially appealing for larger households. I was able to wash a standard 8-pound cotton load in just 42 minutes. Its drying times were equally impressive.

This model did a great job removing dirt, even tackling tough stains like chocolate and wine, all while staying gentle on fabrics. Smart features like AI soil detection, bulk detergent dispensing, and an easy-to-navigate 7-inch touchscreen made this machine exceptionally user-friendly. Note that this machine doesn’t have a traditional detergent dispenser. If you want to bypass the bulk dispensing system, it comes with a small silicone detergent cup, which you fill and place directly in the drum. Drying temperatures can also run slightly high on certain settings, but not hot enough to damage most fabrics.

UltraFast Ventless Combo Washer/Dryer
Credit: GE Profile

Pros

  • Space-saving, since it's a washer and dryer in one
  • Doesn't require a dryer vent
  • Performed well in cleaning and tangling tests

Cons

  • Not as fast as a washer and dryer set

The GE Profile two-in-one washer and dryer stands out for its ability to wash and dry in one machine without needing a vent hookup. This convenience earned it a Good Housekeeping Cleaning & Organizing Award. With a combo like this one, you don’t need to worry about toting your wet laundry from the washer into the dryer. You can put in a load, then set it and forget it until it’s clean and dry.

When I tested this unit, I found that it cleaned well, and the ventless dryer with heat pump dried clothes effectively without using high temperatures that could damage clothes. A wash-and-dry cycle of a full-size load took about two hours from start to finish. While it handles laundry a little more slowly than the separate washer and dryer, it doesn't require as much time spent prompting the machine or dealing with wet clothes. Faced with a load full of button-up shirts, it did well in keeping the sleeves from tangling or forming knots. Like some other favorites, this uses Microban technology to help keep the machine fresh and clean while preventing the growth of odor-causing bacteria.

The app and controls were easy to use, and it’s not much bigger than the typical washer, so it saves space too. Because it’s a ventless unit, it doesn’t need to be installed near a conventional dryer hookup, allowing for greater flexibility in placement. Its 4.8-cubic-foot drum is pretty large, though some standalone units offer larger capacities. While it’s one of the pricier options on the list, you won’t need to buy a separate dryer, and the space-saving design is worth it if you live in a smaller space.

Best Stacked Washing Machine and Dryer Set

Best Stacked Washing Machine and Dryer Set

LG Smart Electric Single Unit WashTower

Pros

  • Easy-to-reach controls in between the connected machines
  • Big enough for most families
  • Smart sensors detect fabrics and load size to customize cycles

Cons

  • Machines cannot be replaced separately

For efficient space use in apartments, condos, small houses, or even deep closets with water and power connections, we recommend the LG WashTower washer-and-dryer set. Most front-loading machines can be stacked, but this takes it to the next level. It is a single unit with the control panel conveniently located in the middle, making it easy to reach.

The tower is equipped with features accessible via the ThinQ smart device app. It can even sense fabric texture and load size, and automatically adjust the wash and dry settings accordingly. It also notifies you when the wash is done.

In the Lab, the unit was easy to load and unload. Cycles were fast, gentle, and effective, and you can choose a steam cycle to lightly freshen worn items. Even after five years of regular use, there have been no musty odors, and the dryer still performs as well as when it was brand new.

The 4.5-cubic-foot washer capacity should be big enough for most families. Note that the two appliances are inseparable, so if the washer or dryer fails and can't be fixed, you'll have to replace both.

Front Load Washer with QuickIntenseWash Option

Pros

  • Compact size for smaller spaces
  • QuickIntenseWash cycle is fast and efficient
  • Matching dryer available

Cons

  • Small drum isn't suited for oversize laundry loads

At 24 inches wide, this compact model from a high-end brand fits in small spaces yet performs in a big way with 25 wash programs. We especially liked QuickIntenseWash. In the Lab rounds, this faster cycle—which completes in 49 minutes—effectively lightened our stain strips. It's great when you're in a hurry and need to wash a soccer uniform or shirt and still get to the field or office on time.

The model features TwinDos Automatic Detergent Dispensing, a two-phase liquid detergent dosing system that the brand says saves, on average, 30% on detergent use compared to manually adding detergent. While the 2.3-cubic-foot drum won't fit oversize laundry loads, this model is still a worthy investment if you live in a small home, condo, or apartment. Miele also makes a matching 24-inch dryer to complete the set.

How we test front-loading washing machines

double line break

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab, we’ve been testing washing machines since the first models came to market in the early 1900s. Our rigorous tests are based on industry-standard protocols from the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM), adapted for our Lab testing.

Good Housekeeping/Carolyn Forté

To assess cleaning performance, we wash industry-standard stain strips with six panels—including sebum, carbon black, blood, chocolate, and red wine, plus an unstained control. We carefully place the strips in the same place in each load and use the same detergent for every machine. Once the strips have air-dried, we use a non-contact colorimeter to measure how much each stain lightened.

We also check specialty cycles, such as bulky bedding and speed wash, and verify that sanitizing cycles can reach and maintain temperatures high enough to effectively kill germs on fabrics. To evaluate tangling, we wash items prone to twisting, like shirts and sheets, and count how many items emerge knotted together.

We also evaluate the gentleness of the machines by washing cotton swatches with pre-cut holes and counting the frayed threads at the end of each cycle. More fraying indicates greater fabric damage.

Additionally, we rate each washer’s water and energy use, and we factor in ease of use by scoring the clarity of the control panel, ease of loading and unloading the drum, and more.

What to look for when shopping for the best front-loading washing machine

linebreak

While app connectivity, extra cycles, and an enormous drum can all be helpful features, they come at a premium. Before buying, think of which features you will actually use.

✔️ Capacity: Some drums are smaller and more compact, while others can handle jumbo loads. Standard capacity ranges from 3.5 to 4.5 cubic feet and should comfortably hold a queen-sized comforter. In comparison, extra-large capacity is 5 cubic feet or more and should hold multiple comforters, pillows, or sleeping bags. Before buying, double-check the maximum capacity, so you don't end up with a washer that's too small for the average size of your loads.

✔️ Energy efficiency: Every washer comes with a yellow Energy Guide label that shows how much it will cost to run the washer with an electric water heater each year. It's a good comparison tool. The lower the cost, the more efficient the machine. An Energy Star certification shows that a model is more efficient than required by current standards. Stricter new government Energy Department standards, starting in 2028, will tighten requirements for residential washers and dryers.

✔️ Smart features: Many of today's washers are Wi-Fi enabled, and you can connect them to a companion app. These apps usually let you start and stop the washer remotely, notify you when the cycle is complete, and some even include stain-removal guides and other laundry tips. While these features are helpful, you will still need to return to the machine to load your laundry into the dryer (unless you have a combo unit), so their time-saving potential is limited.

✔️ Cycle options: Do you wash a lot of lacy bras and delicates? Silks? Bulky items? Look for a model that offers a variety of cycles and customization options. If you prefer a hands-off approach, opt for a machine with auto-sensing that can automatically adjust cycle settings based on load size, fabric type, and soil level.

✔️ Detergent dispensing: Traditional dispensers need to be filled for each cycle, while bulk dispensers hold several loads' worth of detergent and automatically dispense the right amount each time the machine is used. Auto-dispensing can be a serious time-saver, but its utility is limited if you often switch detergents to wash specialty items like silk.

✔️ Warranty: Check online, in store, or by calling the manufacturer to find out how many years of use the company warranty covers—and don't forget to read the fine print!

What's the difference between a front-loading vs. top-loading washing machine?

linebreak

Front-loaders top the lists in our performance tests, but top-loaders aren't far behind. Both types work so well that you probably wouldn't notice a difference in your laundry. It's about personal preference, but know these facts:

• Front-loading washing machines tend to be more energy-efficient. Rather than filling the drum like a bathtub, clothes tumble in a small pool of water. Compared to top-loaders with agitators, front-loaders are better equipped to handle oversized, bulky items such as comforters and sleeping bags.

If you are short on floor space, a front-loading machine can usually be stacked with a matching dryer, provided there is water and utility connections, and venting.

There are drawbacks, though. Water can puddle in the door gasket, dispensers, and drum. To prevent mold and odors, the door must be left ajar, and the dispensers and gasket need to be cleaned regularly. Some models are built to help stop mold, such as our Best Value Whirlpool Smart Front Load Washer with FreshFlow.

To avoid back strain when loading and unloading, consider adding a pedestal to raise the machine if the company has one. It makes the door easier to reach and provides storage space for laundry products.

• A top-loading washing machine is more traditional. The water drains down and out, so the washer is less likely to develop mold and odors than a front loader is. Still, it’s a good idea to clean the washing machine, especially the tub and dispensers, about once a month.

Newer, high-efficiency top loaders clean very well and are energy-efficient, even though they use more water. Models with agitators in the center may be less expensive, but they use the most water and are usually less gentle on fabrics, though there are exceptions.

While they don't require bending down to load and unload, some top-loading machines are so deep that reaching in to grab the last sock can be challenging for shorter consumers. Because their doors open upwards, front-loading units aren't stackable and can't be placed under countertops or low cabinets.

My washing machine has a self-cleaning cycle. Will that keep it fresh for years?

    double line break

A self-clean cycle is designed to help keep your machine fresh for years, provided you use a special washing machine cleaner or bleach as recommended by the manufacturer. Washers with self-clean cycles typically come with a sample of tablets or powder to help remove odor-causing residues, soap scum, fabric softener buildup, and grime inside the pump, valve, tub, drum, agitator, filter, and hose.

The cleaners can generally be used with top and front-loading machines, including High-Efficiency (HE) models. Many manufacturers of both washing machines and cleaners recommend running this cycle monthly or after every 30 washes. Some machines even track the number of washes since the last cleaning cycle and remind you when it is time to run one again.

How long will a washing machine last?

    double line break

If you care for your washing machine properly, it should last for at least 10 years. To help it go the distance:

    • Use the right detergent. For example, High-Efficiency (HE) washers require an HE formula. (Pay attention to dosing directions.)
    • Keep the drum clean and avoid overloading the drum so much that the machine shakes, wobbles, or even moves slightly from its original spot. These are all signs that your wash load is too large, and not only does it reduce cleaning performance in the short term, but it can also wear down your machine in the long run.
