Oil and water don't mix. It often feels like the same could be said for oily skin and foundation. Speaking from personal experience, when your skin looks like an oil slick before noon, it can be tough to find a foundation that lasts all day without separating, melting off your face, or letting loads of shine build up. That's where the best foundations for oily skin come in.
"Seek out liquid or powder formulas with key terms like 'for oily or acne-, breakout-prone skin,' or 'matte,’ 'shine-free,' or 'velvet' finishes, which will balance greasy spots," advises Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab Director Sabina Wizemann. These formulas can absorb oils on the skin, helping achieve a more matte finish.
To find the best foundations for oily skin, we consulted Beauty Lab pros, GH editors, and consumer reviews to round up the best products on the market right now.

Pros
Full coverage
Prevents unwanted shine
Very pigmented
Cons
Some found it to agitate sensitive skin
Get the highest level of shine-free coverage with Make Up For Ever's super-pigmented matte liquid base, which tied for best formula for oily skin in the GH Beauty Lab's foundation test. Experts rated it easiest to dispense and use.
REVIEWER NOTES: "I haven't actively worn foundation in years because I have pretty oily skin, but the oil-free formula and matte finish of Make Up For Ever is perfect for me," one reviewer shared. "It is matte enough to prevent unwanted shine, but it keeps just the right amount of natural dewy-ness."
Another reviewer noted that the latest formulation of this foundation seemed more irritating to their sensitive skin than previous versions.

REVIEWER NOTES: "I've tried every foundation on the market, high-end and drugstore," one Ulta reviewer says. "I always find myself coming back to this foundation!" Amazon reviewers are also fans of the foundation, noting that it provides a blurred "filter" finish and isn't heavy on the skin. A GH Beauty Award winner for good reason, this skin tint is impressively lightweight yet lasts all day. With a natural finish that gives a your-skin-but-better look, it’s infused with hydrating ingredients like squalane and glycerin, which help it seamlessly blend into skin.
TESTER NOTES: "Wow! This is a really nice skin tint and nothing like I have tried in the past," says GH Beauty Lab Senior Chemist Danusia Wnek. "The skin tints I am familiar with and like are typically just lightweight liquidy formulas that are on the fuller coverage side. It still has the liquid-y texture, but it is medium coverage and a super natural finish—not too glowy or matte. It feels really nice on the skin, like I am not wearing anything, and it lasted all day long without breaking up into an oily mess on my skin. My other products lay nicely on top of it. It is easy to apply with a brush or fingertips. Very wearable and user-friendly." She adds that it does require good shaking before use.

Like a filter for your face, this skin tint has impressive blurring powers, helping to smooth fine lines, pores, and texture. Delivering buildable light to medium coverage with a natural finish, it's spiked with hyaluronic acid for hydration.
TESTER NOTES: "I liked how this tint goes from liquid to powder once dried, feeling weightless on skin," Wnek says. "It almost feels like I have nothing on, yet I do feel the oil control. It blends easily into the skin for an even coating. My skin looked like skin, but even and healthy. It does have shimmer, which adds a little luminosity.
"It does a phenomenal job at blurring skin. For a tint, it blurred my pores well. The tip of the package is interesting, almost like a dropper. You can build this formula up a bit, but I needed concealer for active blemish spots that were red. It did break apart a bit halfway through the day. Also, it is very important to shake the product before use."

How we chose the best foundation for oily skin

To determine the best foundations for oily skin, we included products tested by the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab pros as well as editor favorites. We relied on their expert recommendations. We also analyzed hundreds of consumer reviews from across the web to put together this list. We chose the foundations based on shade-matching assessments, wear tests, and oil-control observations.
What to look for when shopping for a foundation for oily skin

Keep these factors in mind when looking for the best foundation for oily skin:
✔️ Finish: Choose foundations with a “matte” or “soft matte” finish. “These finishes typically include oil-controlling ingredients that reduce the look of shine,” Wnek says. “Avoid ‘dewy,’ ‘luminous,’ or ‘radiant’ finishes, which often include light-reflecting pigments that can make oily skin look greasier instead of glowy.”
✔️ Ingredients: For oily and acne-prone skin, Wnek suggests looking for an “oil-free” foundation with salicylic acid that can help manage breakouts, while pigments normally found in foundation help cover up redness.
✔️ Format: “Those with oily skin usually prefer liquid and powder formulas because of their lightweight texture compared to cream foundations, BB creams, or tinted moisturizers,” Wnek says.
