They say aging doesn’t happen overnight, but sometimes it can certainly feel that way. I spent years feeling pretty smug about the fact that I never needed to wear undereye concealer. Then one day, in my late 30s, I suddenly noticed dark undereye circles and I’ve been applying concealer formulated for mature skin ever since.

Our top picks:

✔️ Best overall: Tarte Shape Tape Blur Concealer Stick

This cult classic earned perfect scores for applying evenly and not caking.

✔️ Best value: Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer

A true multitasker that hides dark circles, corrects, highlights, and contours.

✔️ Best luxury: Prada Micro-Correcting Blurring Concealer with Peptides

Makeup artists gave it a perfect score for covering dark circles and blemishes.

✔️ Best for under eyes: Victoria Beckham Beauty The Concealer Pen with TFC8

The pen format makes it ideal for on-the-go.

✔️ Best for dark spots: Ciele Conceal & Protect SPF 50+ Spot Concealer

Helps improve the appearance of discoloration and prevent new dark spots.

"As we age, our skin naturally loses hydration and elasticity, so some fuller coverage concealers can settle into fine lines or actually emphasize texture," says Rose Siard, makeup educator and founder of Rose and Ben Beauty. That’s why makeup artists and our experts at the Good Housekeeping Beauty & Personal Care Lab recommend looking for products that have hydrating ingredients that camouflage without drying out skin more. Our best overall pick, Tarte’s Shape Tape Blur Concealer Stick, is a great example.

Nailing the right shade makes a major difference, and this is where color correction can help mature skin. "Go slightly lighter with a peach or neutral to neutralize darkness under eyes," Siard says. "For face and spot concealer, match your foundation."

The format matters too. "I would generally recommend liquid and creams but look for lighter, more forgiving formulas," Siard says. "Creams are great if you need a little spot concealing with control, and sticks can work but tend to be a little drier and require a little more blending. With any product, flexibility is key." (See Siard's application tips at the end of this story.)

We went straight to the GH Beauty Lab for the top-tested best concealers for mature skin that wowed women and go-to's from experts and editors.

Shape Tape Blur Concealer Stick

Pros

  • Doesn’t cake
  • Applies easily and evenly
  • Not drying
  • Blends well into skin

Cons

  • Not as great for discoloration like blemishes and age spots

The best concealer stick winner in our GH Beauty Awards, Tarte Shape Tape Blur Concealer Stick earned perfect scores for applying evenly to skin, consistent coverage that isn’t patchy, and not caking or irritating. Testers appreciated that it was easy to use, didn’t settle into fine lines, and looked natural. Praised for being easy to apply by testers, it has a diamond-shaped tip for precise application. Though it has a natural matte finish, the formula has a diamond powder that reflects light, plus it’s infused with hyaluronic acid to hydrate and avocado, shea, and mango butters to smooth. It's a superstar for under the eyes, but testers noted that its coverage wasn’t as great for discoloration like blemishes and age spots.

“I like how this product is dispensed; it makes it easy to apply and is less messy,” a tester shared. “It’s a soft, blendable cream which feels very natural. I liked the coverage, especially under my eyes. I found it easy to travel with and use with my finger or a brush.”

Instant Age Rewind Concealer

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Forgiving on texture
  • Easy to apply on skin

Cons

  • Can be difficult to dispense

No matter if you use this multitasker to hide dark circles, correct, highlight, or contour, the brand claims it will last for up to 12 hours while moisturizing skin. A past GH Beauty Lab concealer test winner, the crease-resistant formula is spiked with haloxyl to help hide dark circles and leave the undereye area glowing. It has a cushion-tip applicator with an anti-microbial system to prevent bacteria from growing, according to the brand, though it can be hard to dispense. “Lightweight, easy to work with, and very forgiving on texture, especially for everyday wear,” Siard says of this drugstore superstar.

Micro-Correcting Blurring Concealer with Peptides

Pros

  • Best consumer score for not being drying
  • Blends well into skin
  • Doesn’t settle into fine lines or cake

Cons

  • Some testers wished it had more coverage

Prada is known for their bags—but their liquid concealer helps hide the ones under your eyes. According to GH Beauty Lab consumer testing, it earned the top scores for not being drying, not caking, having a nice texture, and not settling into fine lines. Makeup artists in our testing gave it a perfect score for being able to cover both dark circles and blemishes. Delivering up to 24 hours of buildable medium coverage sans creasing or cracking, the formula contains micro-filter pearls for a blurring effect that leaves skin radiant and more even. There’s also a peptide complex to reduce the appearance of dark circles and fine lines both immediately and over time, plus squalane to smooth. The arrow-shaped applicator helps you apply it exactly where you want it.

“I loved the very light, almost whipped texture of the concealer,” a tester said. “I also really liked the unique shape of the doe foot; I feel like I was able to dispense the exact amount of product I needed, whereas other more standard doe foots tend to dispense a bit too much product. It blended easily and beautifully, and disappeared into the rest of my base beautifully.” However, some testers wished it had more coverage.

Bright Start Creamy Buildable Airbrush Concealer

Pros

  • Highest scores for providing enough coverage for blemishes, dark circles, and redness
  • Nice texture without patchiness or caking
  • Applies evenly for consistent coverage

Cons

  • Some found the sponge-tip applicator hard to use

The ultimate twofer, this cream concealer delivers coverage and skincare in one product, which is why it won a GH Beauty Award. Caffeine, squalane, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide cover all your undereye needs by minimizing puffiness and irritation, hydrating, and brightening dark spots. Beautifully buildable, it can provide medium to full coverage in 26 shades.

Among our testers, it earned perfect scores for being easy to remove at the end of the day. It earned the highest scores for providing enough coverage for blemishes, dark circles, and redness. Testers also appreciated its nice texture—it applies evenly and blends well, providing consistent coverage that isn’t patchy and doesn’t cake or settle into fine lines. However, some found that its sponge-tip applicator made it more difficult to apply.

“It's hard to find an undereye concealer that doesn't look too bright but this was the perfect shade,” one tester said. “It was moisturizing which is great for my undereye area since it can get slightly dry in the winter months. I also liked that I could build the coverage or wear it more sheer on days when I wanted a more natural look.”

Luminous Silk Concealer

Pros

  • The nice texture looks natural
  • Easy to apply and blends well
  • Doesn’t cake or settle into fine lines

Cons

  • May not provide enough coverage for blemishes or redness

When you want that lit-from-within glow, this concealer will do the trick. In fact, it can almost double as a highlighter, thanks to its famously luminous finish. That’s what makes it excel at brightening dark circles and smoothing imperfections. Offering medium-buildable coverage, it’s spiked with glycerin, caffeine, and vitamin E to minimize undereye puffiness, dark circles, and fine lines. In GH Beauty Lab testing, it earned a perfect score for providing a natural look, having a nice texture, being easy to apply, blending well into skin, and not caking or irritating. It lasts a long time and doesn’t settle into fine lines. But, it doesn’t provide ample coverage for blemishes, dark circles, or redness.

“I like how easily it blends into skin and kind of disappears in it but makes it even and brighter. I found it creamy but not too creamy,” says GH Beauty Lab Director Sabina Wizemann. “I also like that the applicator does not carry too much of the product on it so you cannot really cake it on and I appreciated the pointed tip for the sunken parts of my undereye that loaded pigment nicely. It takes a bit to dry, but it has not shown my fine lines or caked through the day.”

Hideaway Brightening + Hydrating Under Eye Color Corrector Concealer

Pros

  • Neutralizes dark circles
  • More lightweight than typical concealer
  • Color corrects

Cons

  • Coverage is on lighter side

When you don’t want to layer on concealer, opt for a color corrector instead. “Great for neutralizing darkness without needing to pile on concealer, it keeps the undereye looking lighter and more natural,” Siard says. The color-correcting pigments work to neutralize dark circles and redness, plus there are creamy pearls that bring radiance—but not shimmer. To smooth and nourish skin there are three types of hyaluronic acid and peptides. But keep in mind that the coverage is on the lighter side.

Conceal & Protect SPF 50+ Spot Concealer

Pros

  • Contains SPF
  • Not irritating or drying
  • Provides ample coverage for sun spots, redness, and blemishes

Cons

  • Can cake and does not blend in well so best to apply in small amounts

The skin around the eyes is the thinnest on the body and hence is the first to show signs of aging, which is why wearing SPF there is even more important. This creamy concealer has SPF built in to save you a step. In GH Beauty Lab testing, it earned perfect scores for not being patchy after application and not being irritating or drying. It also garnered high scores for providing ample coverage, looking natural, and covering sun spots, redness, and blemishes. The long-lasting formula doesn’t settle into lines and contains tranexamic acid to help improve the appearance of discoloration and prevent the formation of new dark spots. Be careful not to go overboard though—it can cake and does not blend in well, so we recommend applying it in small amounts.

“I liked that it is creamy but settles into a smooth satin finish that lasts,” a tester said. “It packs a good pigment and is blurring, in my experience, making skin even and minimizing lines. This product has SPF 50, and I have uber-sensitive eyes; at first, I did not want to touch it as SPF (mineral and chemical) makes my eyes water like crazy, but this was not irritating at all, and for that, I'm really impressed." The tester also appreciated that it doesn't settle in lines, and skin still feels and looks flexible.

Double Wear Concealer

Pros

  • Long wearing
  • Stays in place
  • Full coverage
  • Controls oil

Cons

  • Can crease after a long day

When you really need to camouflage, reach for this classic concealer. It offers “more coverage, but still controlled,” Siard says. “I like this for spot concealing because it stays exactly where you place it.” The multi-use concealer can do anything from conceal to contour to highlight, with up to 24 hours of wear, according to the brand. Its InvisiFlex technology means it moves with your facial expressions for comfortable wear. It also contains hollow micro silica spheres that deliver oil control, helping to keep it looking fresh. Since it may crease after a long day, it’s best to set it with powder right away.

Face Flex Concealer

Pros

  • Flexible formula can be used as concealer or foundation
  • Designed for 40+ skin
  • Contains skin-nourishing ingredients

Cons

  • Coverage is on the sheer side

After decades in the beauty industry creating hit products for brands like Tom Ford Beauty, Bobbi Brown, and Victoria Beckham Beauty, Sarah Creal created her eponymous line when she couldn’t find what she needed for her mature skin. This concealer is designed for what she calls “babes 40+” and doubles as a hydrating foundation and concealer with up to 12-hours of wear, according to the brand. It’s formulated with hyaluronic acid to plump and hydrate, caffeine to depuff dark circles, and aloe leaf extract to calm and soothe redness and irritation.

I love how flexible this Beauty Lab favorite is—the concealer is on the sheer side and can be used for light coverage or built up to more. It blends like a dream and can also be mixed in with moisturizer to be applied all over the skin as a foundation.

The Concealer Pen with TFC8

Pros

  • Slim pen is great for on-the-go
  • Serum formula is super lightweight
  • Looks natural

Cons

  • Sheer coverage may not be ideal for severe redness

Ideal for on-the-go, this slim concealer pen can be tossed into a purse or even a tiny evening bag. Its built-in brush means it has everything you need for flawless application. All you have to do is click it to release more of the formula, taking out the guesswork. It's one of my go-to's for its natural-looking coverage. I love that Victoria Beckham partnered with Augustinus Bader on the skin-forward formula that features the latter’s anti-aging TFC8 complex.

I find it best for use under the eyes, and though it can be applied elsewhere, the light-to-medium buildable coverage might be too sheer for severe redness, like when I have a rosacea outbreak or a really angry pimple.

How we choose the best concealers for mature skin

linebreak

We chose these picks based on Beauty Lab testing, makeup artist recommendations, and GH editor hands-on experience. We considered factors including ingredients, texture, wear time, and how products feel on skin when evaluating or selecting the picks.

What to look for in a concealer for mature skin

linebreak

Siard recommends keeping these factors in mind while shopping:

✔️ Moisturizing: “Look for formulas that are truly hydrating,” she says. Over time, our skin becomes more dry and parched skin can make fine lines more obvious.

✔️ Flexibility: You want a concealer that moves with you. When formulas have zero movement, once again, they can exacerbate fine lines, so look for one that’s thin but buildable.

✔️ Self-setting: Powders can often settle into fine lines, so look for a formula that lets you skip this step. Concealers that are self-setting means you aren’t relying on powders as much.

Do you recommend having multiple concealers?

linebreak

“I like to think in terms of using the right tool for the job,” Siard says. “Having a versatile concealer is great but some formulas do specific things better than others. I personally prefer a lighter weight, brighter concealer for just under the eyes and a slightly fuller coverage for spot concealing, redness, blemishes, or pigmentation. Our skin is complicated, so expecting one formula to do everything is a lot to ask of it.”

What is the best way to apply concealer?

linebreak

“Application is a large part to the success of concealers,” Siard says. “Firstly, you need to prep. Starting with hydrating skincare is a must. [Apply] a light layer of eye cream, not too heavily applied, to avoid slippage, and let the product have time to absorb."

“For the actual application, start light and then build almost to the point of thinking you may not have put enough and be strategic with your placement: inner eye, outer corner, not a full triangle,” Siard says. “Use a larger brush like the Rose and Ben Beauty C32 Large Concealer Brush to diffuse product seamlessly without overworking it. Then take a smaller, denser brush like the Rose and Ben Beauty C31 for precision work and spot concealing. These are liquids so try light tapping motions rather than big swipes to keep the product where you placed it. To finish, only set with powder where absolutely necessary and very lightly.”
