If you have oily hair like I do, you might find that some shampoos don't leave your hair feeling as clean as you'd like. That’s where shampoos specifically formulated for oily hair come in. They contain higher levels of surfactants—the ingredients that cleanse strands—to remove excess sebum (a.k.a. oil)

Our top picks:

We asked expert hairstylists to recommend the best shampoos for oily scalps. Additionally, we share one of the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab's best-tested volumizing shampoos to cleanse and fluff up greasy, limp hair. We also tapped our team of editors, who are always trying the latest products, to share their favorite shampoos for oily hair. Below, see the shampoos we find are the best at keeping hair clean, grease-free, and smelling great.

Essentials Daily Clarifying Cleansing Shampoo

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Great value

Cons

  • Can leave hair feeling dry without a proper conditioning

As the reviews analyst in the GH Beauty lab, I get to try a lot of shampoos, including pricey salon products. But the shampoo I always come back to and frequently purchase for myself is this clarifying formula from Suave. It excels at doing what shampoo is supposed to do: clean oily hair! In fact, this oil-cutting formula is our go-to in the GH Beauty Lab for deeply cleaning strands in all our hair swatch studies. Plus, you truly cannot beat the price, making this Lab favorite pick our best overall and our best value choice.

GH Product Analyst Grace Wu also swears by this shampoo: "The first time I used this shampoo, I was blown away by how squeaky clean my terribly oily hair could feel," she says. "My hair doesn't get as oily as it usually does for a few days after using it." Keep in mind that because this shampoo doesn't contain any conditioning agents, you'll need to condition after using this shampoo to keep your hair smooth and tangle-free.

Rosemary Mint Purifying Shampoo

Pros

  • Sustainably packaged in recycled plastic
  • Easy to recycle
  • Refreshes scalp with cooling peppermint

Cons

  • Doesn't have a pump

Rosemary and mint clean the hair with a refreshing scent. Aveda's purifying shampoo was also a winner of our GH Sustainable Packaging Awards. Its bottle is made of 100% recycled plastic and has no secondary packaging. GH experts like that you can recycle the press-caps; the design also dispenses the perfect amount of product to avoid waste. The shampoo contains peppermint oil to create a refreshing, cooling sensation on the scalp.

Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

Pros

  • Treats the symptoms of dandruff
  • Fresh scent

Cons

  • Not for daily use

If you're dealing with both an oily scalp and dandruff flakes, this medicated shampoo can help you on both fronts. I personally use this shampoo to help treat my dandruff, and I find it also does a great job at washing away hair and scalp oils and leaves behind an invigorating fresh scent. This shampoo contains the active ingredient ketoconazole to address scalp flaking and itching. Keep in mind that this shampoo is meant to be used only every three to four days, so if you're a daily washer, you'll need to have another shampoo in your routine.

Perfect Hair Day Shampoo

Pros

  • Adds fluffy volume to hair
  • Effectively cleans scalp

Cons

  • Could be drying for some

Good Houskeeping's deputy editor of editorial commerce is a fan of this deeply cleansing shampoo. "My fine hair gets oily so easily, and this has long been my favorite shampoo because it actually makes my scalp feel clean" she shares. The shampoo also gives her hair a boost of volume, adding "my hair feels nice and fluffy after use." Though, she notes that it's not the most conditioning shampoo and some might find it too drying for their hair.

OUAI Detox Shampoo

Pros

  • Great scent
  • Doesn't leave hair feeling dry

Cons

  • May be too strongly scented for some

Washing your hair with this shampoo will leave your hair not only clean, but beautifully scented as well. This shampoo comes in Ouai's classic Melrose Place fragrance, which is such a big hit with us in the GH Beauty Lab that we keep a can of the brand's dry shampoo on our counter. The fragrance is bright and invigorating with notes of rose, pink pepper, lychee, and musk. Regarding the shampoo, a former GH assistant editor says "a small amount of this scented detox shampoo leaves my hair feeling super clean without leaving it dry. I use it about once a week, and my scalp and hair always look, feel and smell great." However, those who are sensitive to scents might find the shampoo's fragrance too strong.

Peptide Prep Detox Shampoo

Pros

  • Deeply cleanses hair
  • May help extend time between washes

Cons

  • Can leave hair feeling dry

If you have oily hair and an oily scalp, this shampoo is a great choice. It deeply cleanses hair and can extend the amount of time between washes. It also contains K18's signature peptide. One of our GH staffers uses it once a week: "It has been a game changer for me, and allows me to go four days between washes (where I used to have to go every two days)." Since this shampoo leaves hair feeling extra-clean, some might find it too drying for their hair.

Stabilizing Shampoo
Credit: Harklinikken

Pros

  • Suitable for oily roots and dry ends
  • Helps balance scalp

Cons

  • Doesn't create a rich lather

Harklinikken's stabilizing shampoo is a favorite of celebrity hairstylist Ashleigh Marie. She likes that it's "very clarifying but doesn’t overdry the hair and helps to stabilize the scalp microbiome." The brand claims this pricey hair wash is formulated to reduce excess sebum while also promoting conditions for hair growth. Keep in mind that some reviewers noted that it doesn't lather as well as they would like.

No. 4 Bond Maintenance Clarifying Shampoo

Pros

  • Clarifies without stripping
  • Improves shine

Cons

  • Recommended for once-a-week use

For a gentle yet effective clarifying shampoo, turn to this Olaplex formula. Marie likes this one for its deep cleanse. "It removes buildup and minerals on the scalp and hair but also isn’t super stripping," she shares. Our former Beauty Assistant has also used this shampoo and noticed a significant improvement in hair shine even after just one use, though it's pricey. Note that the brand recommends using it once a week or as needed, so it may not replace your main shampoo if you lather up often.

Densifique Bodifying Shampoo

Pros

  • Super lightweight
  • Helps thicken hair without weighing it down
  • Adds volume and body to hair

Cons

  • Has a screw-on lid that you have to twist off

A salon splurge that’s worth it, Kérastase’s shampoo (and complementary conditioner) were stars in GH Beauty Lab testing for plumping strands but feeling featherlight. They won for leaving hair feeling clean after rinsing and also earned top points for weightlessness in Lab evaluations. "It left my hair full of body and was nice and thick without weighting my hair down," a tester raves. "All day it had that just-washed look." However, this pricey shampoo features a screw-on lid design that was very polarizing to testers.

How we chose the best shampoos for oily hair

display of various hair care products on a table

To create this list, we combined a product tested in a Good Housekeeping Institute's Beauty and Personal Care Lab study with recommendations from expert hairstylists and GH editors.

Because volumizing shampoos leave hair light and free of buildup, we included one product, the Kérastase Densifique Bodifying Shampoo, from our study of volumizing shampoos. In that test, we label-masked 14 shampoos before they were distributed to 308 consumer testers to use at home. Testers evaluated the products on factors like the shampoo's ease of use (level of lather, scent, ease of rinsing, etc.), hair cleansing performance, and how their hair looks and feels after use.

The rest of the products in this list were selected based on expert recommendations and editor experience. We enlisted the help of two celebrity hairstylists—Glenn Ellis and Ashleigh Marie—to recommend shampoos for oily hair based on their professional experience with their clients, and asked our team of editors and analysts to share their favorite shampoos for oily hair based on their own long-term use.

What to look for when shopping for the best shampoos for oily hair

If you're in the market for a shampoo for greasy hair, consider the following when shopping:

✔️ Formula appearance: Look at the color and texture of the shampoo for a cue, suggests GH Beauty Lab Director Sabina Wizemann. "In general, the rule of thumb should be to look for clear shampoos, not milky ones," she explains. Milky shampoos typically have more conditioning ingredients, making them better for dry hair, while clear formulas are usually stronger cleansers and designed to effectively remove excess oil from the hair and scalp.

✔️ Look for the word "clarifying": In the shampoo world, clarifying means formulated to wash away oil and product buildup. Clarifying shampoos "clear up" the residue on your hair to give your strands a fresh start.

✔️ Don't be afraid of sulfates: Sulfates in shampoo have gotten a bad rap, but they're very effective at cleansing hair. In our label-masked tests of shampoo, we've found that consumers like shampoos containing sulfates just as much or more than sulfate-free formulas.

How do I stop my hair from getting so oily?

line break

Though you can't change the amount of oil your scalp produces, you can keep the appearance of greasy hair at bay with these tips.

  • Avoid touching your hair. "When you touch your hair the oil on your hands gets in your hair so it can make your hair dirtier faster," says Ellis.
  • Wash your hair when it feels oily. This may seem obvious, but it bears repeating. Washing two to three times a week may not be enough for someone with higher oil production, advises Marie, and washing when your hair starts to feel oily prevents visible buildup.

How often should I wash my hair?

line break

The answer can be complicated. Your schedule for sudsing up comes down to a few factors, including your hair type and texture, natural oil levels, and lifestyle. For example, if you work out frequently, you should wash your hair more often. In general, the more textured your hair is, the less often you need to shampoo. If you have an oily scalp and fine hair, washing every day is perfectly safe. A typical benchmark is washing hair every two to three days, but see what works best for your individual needs.
