If you're relying on foundation infused with SPF as your only sun protection, bad news: Dermatologists say that's not enough. To get the SPF level listed on the label, you'd need to apply far more makeup than most people actually wear.

The challenge? Not every sunscreen layers well under makeup. The wrong formula can cause pilling, patchiness, caking, or slipping, affecting both your makeup application and the sunscreen's coverage.

Our top picks:

To find formulas that do both jobs well, the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab evaluated face sunscreens that wear comfortably under makeup while providing reliable daily UV protection. These are the top-performing picks.

Total Protection No-Show Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50

Pros

  • Highest test score for not interfering with makeup
  • Doesn’t leave film or residue
  • Easy to apply

Cons

  • Applies best on moisturized skin

This mineral sunscreen earned the top spot in our Beauty Lab tests thanks to its lightweight feel and seamless wear under makeup. Unlike some mineral formulas, it won't leave skin feeling heavy, greasy, or coated, and testers reported no stinging or irritation.

The formula goes on with a slight white tint that quickly blends in, making it easy to see exactly where you've applied it so you're less likely to miss a spot. It also helps shield skin from pollution, UV exposure, and other daily skin stressors while delivering reliable sun protection.

Keep in mind that it applies most smoothly over moisturizer, especially if your skin is on the drier side.

TESTER NOTES: “The cream’s texture was light and smooth,” a tester shared. “There was no scent, and it was very easy to apply. It did not feel greasy or thick. It was like an invisible screen being applied to my face, keeping the harmful rays off. The lotion was very lightweight, with an almost whipped consistency. I spent some time out in the sun and did not get a sunburn on my face, which is unusual for me, as I am fair-skinned. Absolutely loved this sunscreen and will be a customer for life.”

  • Great texture
  • Doesn’t cause redness or irritation

Cons

It uses ginger to help boost radiance, plus antioxidants to help protect skin from environmental stressors like pollution. TESTER NOTES: “I like that it was not thick and went on easily and absorbed quickly,” a tester said. “I also liked that it had vitamin C in it. I don’t typically like to use products with chemical ingredients, but this did not bother my face as much as others had in the past.”

Every.Single.Face. Watery Lotion SPF 50

Pros

  • Easy to apply
  • Great texture
  • Helps prevent damage from pollution

Cons

  • Some found the scent unpleasant

The eye-catching packaging may draw you in, but it's the lightweight feel that makes this sunscreen stand out. This chemical SPF contains cress sprout extract to boost the skin barrier and protect from pollution, while wild butterfly ginger root extract protects skin from free radical damage. During testing, users praised the texture and ease of application, but some found the scent unpleasant.

TESTER NOTES: "While I have dry skin, most sunscreens I've used either feel too thick, too oily, or too greasy," a tester said. "This sunscreen is the only one I've tried out of dozens that leaves my skin looking and feeling comfortable. It's so lightweight that it feels like I have nothing on my face. I love that it gives me a natural glow (or dewy look) with minimal stickiness/tackiness. I also appreciate how easy it is to find in my bag thanks to its fun shape. Plus, no white cast!"

UV Expert Supra Screen Invisible Sunscreen Serum SPF 50+

Pros

  • Lightweight texture
  • Doesn’t leave skin greasy
  • Infused with skincare ingredients

Cons

  • Subtle citrus scent can be polarizing

Too much fun in the sun can make skin look dull, uneven, and dehydrated, which is where this anti-aging formula stands out. The formula is infused with vitamin C for a brighter-looking complexion, niacinamide to help soften the look of dark spots and uneven tone, and hyaluronic acid for lightweight hydration that can make fine lines appear less noticeable. It has a subtle citrus scent, so sensitive-skin users may prefer a fragrance-free option.

TESTER NOTES: “This sunscreen offers the perfect amount of hydration without being greasy or heavy,” says GH Beauty Lab Reviews Analyst Chiara Butler. “It feels as light as a serum on my skin. I put this on in the mornings, and it provides a great hydrating base for my makeup. (The brand also conducted its own 12-week consumer study in which 92% agreed the product primes skin before makeup application.)”

Future Renew Defense Shield SPF 50

Pros

  • Doesn’t irritate skin
  • Smooth texture
  • Absorbs quickly
  • Doesn’t feel oily or greasy

Cons

  • Not as hydrating as other facial sunscreens tested
  • Can leave a shiny finish

This GH Beauty Award-winning sunscreen earned perfect scores for avoiding stinging, burning, redness, breakouts, and eye irritation. Testers also liked its texture, saying it absorbed quickly, hydrated without feeling greasy, and left no noticeable film or residue. However, some said it isn’t as hydrating as other facial sunscreens tested and can leave a shiny finish.

TESTER NOTES: "This sunscreen blended in so smoothly,” a tester said. “It made my skin feel hydrated and not greasy. It immediately absorbed for a barely-there feel. I've been using it every day for the past two weeks and have noticed an improvement in my skin texture, too! My previous sunscreen felt tacky, and now I can never go back.”

All-Physical Ultimate Defense SPF 50

Pros

  • Great for dry skin
  • Dewy finish
  • Doesn’t leave a white cast

Cons

  • May be irritating to those with sensitive skin

This sunscreen feels more like a lightweight moisturizer than a traditional SPF. In testing, it left skin so hydrated that many testers skipped their usual moisturizer, thanks to hyaluronic acid and other moisture-attracting ingredients that help soften the appearance of fine dry lines.

It also includes tranexamic acid, an ingredient that can help improve the look of uneven tone and dark spots over time. Testers gave it the highest overall satisfaction score, especially for how hydrated it made skin feel and for not stinging or burning. The main drawback: A few reviewers with sensitive skin found it irritating.

TESTER NOTES: "I loved that it is creamy and smooth rather than tacky, and didn't leave a white residue," a tester said. "The lack of scent and the lightweight feel of the lotion made me honestly forget that I even had sunscreen on. I love that this product disappears under my makeup!"

Daily UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 36

Pros

  • Doesn’t leave a white cast
  • Easy to apply
  • Contains cica to ease redness

Cons

  • Some didn’t like the scent

A favorite among our testers and a GH Beauty Award winner, this Korean sunscreen stood out for how well it worked across different skin tones and types. Its lightweight formula contains green tea to help nourish skin and cica (centella asiatica), a popular Korean skincare ingredient known for calming visible redness and irritation. Testers especially appreciated that it blended in easily without leaving a white cast, a greasy finish, or a sticky feel. Though the scent is faint, some testers didn't like its “sunscreen smell.”

TESTER NOTES: “I have very sensitive skin and most sunscreens cause me to break out,” a tester said. “I've been using this product daily for a month without issue. I live in hot, humid South Florida and love how lightweight it is; it doesn't feel heavy. It does not leave a cast or oily residue. It goes on easily, not sticky at all, protects well, and does not interfere with makeup.”

TESTER NOTES: “This product absorbed quickly, and I love that it left my face looking smooth and matte,” a tester said. “I would use this product again. It left my face feeling hydrated. Though it was thick and took some rubbing in, it eventually absorbed and did a great job.”

How we choose the best face sunscreen under makeup

linebreak

At the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab, we've tested 734 face sunscreens since 2014. For this story, we drew from a recent Lab face sunscreen test, in which consumer panelists evaluated how well each formula wore under makeup throughout the day. Panelists assessed whether sunscreens pilled, streaked, or created patchiness when layered with makeup, and we prioritized products that earned top ratings in these categories. We also consulted Beauty Lab experts and board-certified dermatologists on the key features to look for in a face sunscreen that layers well with makeup.

What to look for when shopping for the best face sunscreen under makeup

Keep these factors in mind for smooth wear:

✔️ Shop for your skin type: “To ensure your sunscreen doesn’t pill under makeup, you should choose the right one, in the right formula for your skin type,” says Jodi LoGerfo, D.N.P., A.P.R.N., FNP-C. “For example, if you have oily skin, choose a gel- or water-based sunscreen.”

✔️ Wear similar bases: When sunscreen and foundation formulas are incompatible or mismatched, they’re more likely not to wear well together. “Sunscreens with a water-based formula (such as gels and water emulsions), silicone-based formulas (such as dimethicone or cyclopentasiloxane), or oil-based formulas (like botanical oils) generally layer well under makeup, with the same base, and are usually easily blended over,” says GH Institute Beauty Lab Director Sabina Wizemann.

Nathan Newman, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist, cosmetic surgeon, and the founder of The Stem Company, adds, “Employing a water-based sunscreen in conjunction with water-based makeup fosters swift absorption and harmonious blending, ultimately delivering impeccable coverage and a flawless, polished appearance.”

✔️ Look at the label: “In general, a sunscreen should be labeled as ‘cosmetic-like’ or ‘primer-like,’” Dr. LoGerfo says. “This usually means that the sunscreen is thin, silky, and lightweight. Lightweight sunscreens are usually gel-based, fluid, or a lightweight lotion. It is key to avoid thick sunscreens or creams if you plan on wearing makeup. If you want to smooth the skin, silicone-based (like dimethicone) sunscreens are best. They help to fill in texture irregularities, reduce friction, and create a primer effect.”

✔️ Opt for hydrating formulas: Dry skin can lead to patchiness, while moisturized skin helps keep a smooth canvas. “You want the sunscreen to be hydrating but not occlusive,” Dr. LoGerfo says. “Ingredients like glycerin, squalane, and hyaluronic acid are great.”

How can you prevent sunscreen from pilling under makeup?

linebreak

When applying, be sure that each layer is fully absorbed before applying the next. “I usually recommend waiting five minutes in between layers to ensure that it gets absorbed completely,” Dr. LoGerfo says. “You should also shun using too many layers and avoid using products that are too heavy. You must try to use makeup that gets along with your sunscreen. Water-based makeup is ideal, and it is better to be thin than thick. You can test the compatibility of your products on the back of your hand first before applying to your face."

How often should you apply facial sunscreen?

linebreak

“Sunscreen should be applied every day, always the last step before applying makeup,” Dr. LoGerfo says. “Remember, if you are outside for the day, sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours.”

What is the best way to reapply sunscreen when you’re already wearing makeup?

linebreak

If you are already wearing makeup, consider the following options:

✔️ Sponge: “Reapply sunscreen over your makeup by delicately blending a small amount with a sponge, ensuring an even application,” Dr. Newman says. “Gently pat a lightweight, preferably tinted or cushion SPF, to reinforce protection without disrupting your makeup.”

✔️ Powder: Use a powder sunscreen for touch-ups. “Simply brush-on mineral SPF powders, typically zinc or titanium-based, that both mattify the skin and effectively rejuvenate sun protection over existing makeup with a seamless finish,” Dr. Newman says.

Is sunscreen less effective when worn under makeup?

linebreak

No, but improper application or layering can diminish its effectiveness. “To maximize protection, ensure a sufficient amount of sunscreen is applied, allowing it to fully absorb and dry before proceeding,” Dr. Newman says. “Employ gentle, seamless application techniques when applying makeup over it, and reapply at regular intervals throughout the day. When performed with these precautions, your sunscreen can maintain its integrity and efficacy, even beneath a complete makeup look.”
