I have always had a deep, loving relationship with my 4C-type curls. I went natural in 2020 to embrace the curly-coily springs that grew from my head, leaving behind the relaxers and chemical treatments designed to straighten them. It was amazing to see the various curl patterns grow across my scalp and to embrace the many styling options, from silk presses to twist-outs. I was in a rhythm—until I hit a few snags.

After a dye job left my hair brittle and dehydrated, I attempted to start fresh. I chopped off the dyed ends of my hair, but my curls still struggled. My once silky-smooth hair was now riddled with split ends up the shaft. My curls, while still tight, struggled to retain moisture, making it hard to achieve definition. Breakage was common during wash days, and blow-outs left my hair stiff. Even with excessive products and manipulation, my curls still appeared dry and struggled to hold their form, with frizz puffing them back up to their natural state.

I wanted my hair not to feel so dry and brittle and for my curls to retain moisture, elasticity, definition, and shine. I traded in gels that left my curls dry, flaky, and sticky for mousses that were lightweight, restored shine and elasticity without weighing my hair down, and gave me the definition I craved.

It took some experimenting, but I eventually learned that a freshly clarified scalp, high moisture, and lightweight products were the key to recovery. Shampooing twice—once to clarify my scalp and remove the dirt and oil buildup so my hair wouldn’t be weighed down, and again to moisturize and detangle—changed how my hair responded to styling products. The combination of a rinse-out conditioner and a deep conditioner improved my hair’s moisture intake and retention through blow-drying and styling. Hair primers such as detanglers, serums, and leave-in conditioners helped my hair manage heat better, while stylers such as moisture-sealing lotions, mousses, and lightweight oils helped condition my hair to adhere to its natural curl pattern without too much manipulation.

Nourishing my hair back to health took a lot of trial and error, but I finally narrowed it down to 10 products. If you’re struggling to restore your curls or simply need a refresh to your routine, these are the products that helped my curls bounce back.

A deeply cleansing shampoo was imperative as the first step of my haircare routine. This shampoo gave me a thorough wash without leaving my hair feeling stripped. It helped remove oil, product buildup, and flakes. After rinsing, my scalp feels squeaky clean.

A moisturizing shampoo became the second step in my routine. I’ve always struggled to find a shampoo that cleanses my hair but doesn’t strip it of moisture, and this shampoo did exactly that. My strands felt coated but not heavy, and my curls felt moisturized. It provided great slip, making detangling a breeze and reducing snags as I worked through it with my comb and fingers.

Finding a wash-out conditioner that provided long-term moisture was a key third step in restoring my curls, and this Camille Rose option checked every box. This conditioner made my hair bouncy and helped restore my natural curl pattern. After washing with this, my coils were visibly tight and springy—when stretched, they would bounce back just like a slinky.

I was hesitant to use this product because it contains hydroxypropyltrimonium honey, a conditioning agent derived from raw honey, which made me worry it would make my hair sticky. Instead, the mask quickly became a staple as the fourth step in my routine. I used the mask alone and would let it sit for at least 15 minutes. After rinsing, my strands felt deeply hydrated, soft, and shiny.

After the wash was completed, it was time to tackle blow-drying. Having thick, coily hair, I often struggled with tangles. This spray was the fifth step in my wash day routine, serving as a primer and detangler, allowing my blow-dryer to glide through my hair like butter. I was able to blow-dry in peace, knowing that it served as a heat protectant, and I didn’t have to worry about heat damage.

This product worked harmoniously with my primer, acting as a sealant for my split ends. I struggled with fairy knots, excessive shedding, and snags when blow-drying; however, after applying this, my hair felt coated. I was able to run a comb through my hair without it snagging at the ends, and I noticed less hair fallout while blow-drying. It quickly became a pivotal sixth step in my routine.

For my seventh step, I needed a product that would consistently work to keep moisture in my hair as I was blow-drying, and I found that leave-in conditioners worked best for me. What I loved about Pattern’s was that it was lightweight and didn’t cause product buildup or interfere with other styling products. It gave my hair amazing slip through the blow-drying process and made my once dull black strands look shiny, thick, and full of life.

Since my hair is low porosity, meaning it’s harder for moisture and products to absorb, I’ve always struggled to keep my hair moisturized after blow-drying and wash days. No matter how many times I tried the leave-in, cream, oil (LCO) method, my hair would start feeling dry within hours. So when I discovered this sealing lotion from Cécred, I was skeptical but hopeful, and it absolutely lived up to the hype, holding its spot as step eight in my routine. I applied a small dollop into my freshly blow-dried hair, focusing on my ends, and it instantly sealed in moisture. Instead of drying out after a few hours, my hair stayed soft, hydrated, and moisturized for nearly a week.

When it came to styling and definition, it was a section where I struggled the most. Gels dried my hair out and left flakes everywhere. I searched high and low for a product that could give my tight curls definition without compromising on health or having to wash it out the next day, and came across The Doux. This mousse had tons of styling ability–I could apply it to my hair wet or dry, and it would clump my strands really well while showing my defined ‘s’ type curl. I experienced a strong hold strong in my curls that wasn’t crunchy or dry, which was ideal for twist outs and wash and go’s. My twist outs were full, voluminous, and shiny, with no flaking, itching, or irritation. This product quickly became the ninth step in my routine.

Last but not least, as part of my 10-step hair tango, I needed a hair oil for added shine, and this one quickly became a favorite. Like the sealing lotion, this pomade-to-oil formula acted as a coating. It added instant glaze to my strands, and it played well with other products—I could apply it directly on top of my mousse for a wash and go without having to worry about flaking or product buildup.
