Mando and Grogu are back together, folks—and it’s time we delve a little deeper into their relationship.

The Mandalorian had Star Wars fans going wild when the show first premiered on Disney+ back in 2019. Following a galactic bounty hunter (played by Pedro Pascal) who stumbles upon an infant creature sensitive to the Force, the show has explored the duo’s adventures amid danger and chaos. Viewers clearly loved seeing the Mandalorian and Grogu’s father-child dynamic, as the hit series went on for three seasons. And now, there’s one more adventure for the duo, with The Mandalorian and Grogu hitting movie theaters on May 22, 2026.

We couldn’t help but wonder how The Mandalorian and Grogu movie connects to The Mandalorian series. Is the movie related to the show?

Is The Mandalorian and Grogu related to The Mandalorian?

Yes, The Mandalorian and Grogu does have connections to The Mandalorian series. In fact, the movie is set to begin immediately after the events of The Mandalorian season 3, with Mando and Grogu as independent bounty hunters for the fledgling New Republic amid the Empire's defeat.

Additionally, The Mandalorian and Grogu features key players that were previously introduced in the Star Wars franchise. Folks will want to pay attention to Star Wars: The Clone Wars character Rotta the Hutt (Jeremy Allen White), Star Wars Rebels character Zeb Orrelios (Steve Blum), The Mandalorian characters Janu Coin (Jonny Coyne) and New Republic X-wing pilot Trapper Wolf (played by movie co-writer Dave Filoni), along with the Anzellan creatures that help fix the spaceships needed by Mando and Grogu.

Did Disney cancel The Mandalorian season 4 for The Mandalorian and Grogu?

As director Jon Favreau pointed out during an interview with Collider, the movie is the result of a delayed fourth season of The Mandalorian. The switch-up occurred after the 2023 SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, giving Jon (who also co-wrote the movie) and Dave the chance to transform season 4 into a standalone movie.

“The priorities changed when what I had written as a season 4 before the work stoppage,” he said in a video posted on YouTube. “That was pushed to the side, and we came up with a new script together. So, it has a different feel than a season of television, which acknowledges that you’ve seen all three coming before. We wanted to have this be an understandable enough standalone experience, so that if a fan wants to bring somebody who may not be as familiar, they’ll still have a good time. But the details are still there, and it does, I think, feed into the time period.”

We’re excited for the movie and have our eyes peeled for Easter eggs!
