These Midnight Margaritas Are the Ultimate Halloween Cocktail
A spooky, stirred twist on the witches’ favorite drink.

Fans of Practical Magic, the cult classic, know the iconic midnight margarita scene: Sally and Gillian wake up to the sound of the blender, shout “midnight margaritas!” and head to the kitchen to drink and dance around the kitchen to “Coconut” with their aunts.
While the aunts use eye of newt, toe of frog, Barbados lime, and salt like a sailor’s stubble in their frozen margaritas, we came up with our own version that feels hauntingly appropriate for Halloween.
First, we skipped the blender and stirred the margaritas instead, so the rest of the house can stay asleep. Then we added a teaspoon of activated charcoal for a perfectly eerie midnight hue. For the final touch, we used a kitchen torch to quickly char sugared limes, completing the spooky effect.
The result is a scary-good lime margarita that looks wicked but tastes familiar—and we think Sally, Gillian, and the aunts would approve. It’s just right for rewatching the original, streaming the sequel, or sipping during a Halloween movie marathon.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups tequila blanco
- 1 cup triple sec
- 1 cup fresh lime juice, plus 1 lime, thinly sliced
- 1 tsp. activated charcoal
- Simple syrup, to taste (optional)
- 2 tsp. sugar
- 1/2 tsp. kosher salt
Directions
- Step 1In large glass pitcher, stir together tequila, triple sec, lime juice, and charcoal. Taste and add simple syrup if desired. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
- Step 2Place lime slices on rimmed baking sheet in single layer. Sprinkle tops with sugar and salt. Using culinary torch, slowly wave flame over tops until sugar melts and begins to caramelize. Let cool completely, then cut slit into each lime.
- Step 3To serve, stir margarita well and pour into ice-filled glasses. Garnish rims with torched limes.
