Cottagecore might be having a moment, but cottage cheese is having a comeback of its own. It’s the low-effort, high-reward staple that’s packed with protein, easy to dress up, and just as at home on your breakfast plate as it is in your dessert bowl.

According to the USDA, just ⅔ cup of 2% cottage cheese delivers 16 grams of protein, 151 mg of calcium, and a healthy dose of phosphorus, helping support everything from strong bones to healthy muscles.

"It's so important to get enough protein, but it can be tough since it often requires planning and cooking," explains Amy Davis, RDN, a New Orleans-based dietitian. "Cottage cheese is an easy way to add it to your diet. And if you choose a fermented variety, you’ll also get gut-healthy probiotics."

One reason it's so satisfying? Cottage cheese is naturally rich in casein protein, a slow-digesting protein that provides a steady stream of amino acids and helps keep you feeling full longer. "This makes it a great choice for stabilizing blood sugar and supporting satiety,” says integrative nutritionist and certified functional health expert Annie Mabashov. She also notes that it’s naturally high in selenium, an antioxidant that supports thyroid health—and that enjoying it in the evening may help support overnight muscle repair.

Pair it with fruit and you’ve got an easy upgrade that feels anything but boring. Cottage cheese’s creamy texture and subtly tangy flavor make it the perfect match for everything from peak-season farmers’ market finds to everyday grocery store staples. Mixing up your fruit choices keeps things fresh and exciting while adding a boost of fiber, nutrients, and natural sweetness.

If you're all about that sweet-and-savory magic, pineapple and cottage cheese is a combo you need to try. This tropical fruit is packed with vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, manganese, and B vitamins.

“The sweet, slightly tangy flavor of pineapple pairs perfectly with cottage cheese,” says Davis. “Plus, pineapple naturally contains bromelain, an enzyme that supports digestion. If you’re sensitive to dairy, combining it with pineapple may make for an easier-to-digest snack.”

Fresh or frozen pineapple is both great options. If you’re using canned, just drain and rinse it first to cut back on added sugar—or better yet, go with an option that’s packed in its own juice instead of syrup.

Berries

Berries bring more than just a pop of color to your bowl of cottage cheese. They’re packed with anthocyanins—the powerful antioxidants behind their blue, red, and purple hues—along with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and beneficial phytonutrients.

Adding even more to their breakfast aura points: Berries are rich in flavonoids, compounds linked to cognitive benefits.

“Berries are naturally low in sugar, making them a perfect match for cottage cheese if you’re aiming to keep your blood sugar steady,” says Davis. “Try blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, or cranberries. Better yet, mix them all together for a nutrient-packed combo.”

Crisp, sweet, and loaded with fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants, apples are a pretty convincing case for that old “keep the doctor away” saying. With just 95 calories per medium apple, they add a satisfying, low-cal crunch to creamy cottage cheese. And the perks don't stop at flavor. Research shows apples may help support heart health, weight loss, and combating inflammation.

There are plenty of varieties to choose from, from tart Granny Smiths to juicy Galas. Toss in chunks or slices with your cottage cheese for a delicious, apple-licious breakfast. For an extra craveable finish, sprinkle with cinnamon or drizzle a bit of maple syrup.

Peach

Juicy, in-season peaches are a perfect match for the mild saltiness of cottage cheese. They also contain an array of vitamins and minerals.

Other stone fruits, like plums and nectarines, are delicious options too. “In summer, peaches steal the show—their sweet, fresh flavor pairs so perfectly with cottage cheese that it can easily double as dessert,” says Davis. “For an adventurous twist, try adding a sprinkle of fresh mint or basil.” Davis’ tip for picking the perfect peach: Look for fruit that’s slightly soft to the touch and gives off a sweet aroma. That’s your cue that it’s ready to enjoy!

Kiwi

Curious about cottage cheese, but not sure about the texture? Try pairing it with kiwi, suggests Davis. “The tiny seeds add a light crunch that balances out the creaminess, and for even more texture, you can sprinkle on some granola,” she says. “Kiwi is one of the most underrated fruits. It’s a vitamin C powerhouse—just two give you 100% of your daily needs—and it’s high in fiber. It’s a really unique, refreshing pairing.”

To pick a ripe kiwi, look for one that’s slightly soft to the touch. If the hard nub at the end comes off easily with your fingers, it’s ready; if you need a knife, it’s not quite there yet. For extra fiber, Davis also recommends keeping the skin on—just rinse and scrub well before eating.

Mango

Mango is another sweet, juicy tropical favorite that pairs well with mild, creamy cottage cheese. Loaded with immune-boosting vitamins and minerals like vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, potassium, copper, and magnesium, it’s as healthy as it is delicious. Just ¾ cup of mango contains 50% of your daily vitamin C needs, making it a great immune booster.

PSA: Color isn’t the best way to judge ripeness. According to the National Mango Board, a ripe mango should feel slightly soft when squeezed. If fresh mango isn’t in season, frozen mango is available year-round. For an extra tropical twist, top with coconut flakes!

Pear

For a seasonal fall twist on cottage cheese, add pear chunks with a sprinkle of cinnamon. This flavorful combo is packed with health benefits—like helping to balance blood sugar and keep you full longer, says Mabashov.

“Pairing cottage cheese with pear creates a steady rise in blood sugar, avoiding the quick spike-and-crash you’d get from fruit alone,” she explains. “Both foods also support gut health. Pear’s pectin fiber acts as a prebiotic, while the live cultures in cottage cheese provide probiotics.”

Bonus: The protein and fat in cottage cheese help regulate ghrelin (the hunger hormone), and the fiber in pear slows digestion, keeping you satisfied and curbing appetite.

Cherries

There’s a reason they say “the cherry on top”—actually, there are plenty of reasons! One is that cherries are packed with antioxidants and polyphenols that can have a protective effect on brain cells. Research also shows that cherries can help prevent chronic inflammatory diseases like diabetes, arthritis, cancer, and heart disease. What’s more, the sweet-tart flavor of this superfood gets even better paired with creamy cottage cheese.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, one cup of fresh cherries has 260 milligrams of potassium, very little sodium, and high amounts of phytosterols—all of which support healthy blood pressure. On top of that, the protein in cottage cheese helps slow the digestion of the cherries’ natural sugars, keeping blood sugar steady.
