We’re all at least a little beholden to social algorithms, and their influence is quite profound in nearly every aspect of our lives. When it comes to hosting, a lot of great inspiration can be found in our endless scrolling, but there’s also something to be said about stepping away from the “perfect tablescape” and instead embracing, well, something fresher.
Something more you. Something AI could never dream up, and something that ignores “viral potential” altogether. That’s where the “anti-algorithm” table comes in.
What Are “Anti-Algorithm” Tablescapes?
Increasingly championed by event planners and designers, anti-algorithm tablescapes are all about letting go of meticulously coordinated tables in favor of a more eclectic look. Think mismatched china at every place setting, an unexpected platter, inherited silverware, and linens layered in a way that feels very you.
“People are exhausted by tables that look like they were assembled by a search engine,” says Amos Gott, chief event architect at AmosEvents. “What excites me about the anti-algorithm aesthetic is that it's bringing character back to the table.”
He adds that the best tables have always felt like a biography rather than a catalog. These layered tables tell a story about who the host is that goes further than their favorite retailer.
How to Embrace “Anti-Algorithm” Tables
To sidestep your algorithm, adopt these table-setting rules.
1. Channel a Mood (Not a Set)
Gott says to build your tablescape around a vibe or a mood, and not around a matching set. “Instead of asking whether everything coordinates, ask whether everything belongs in the same story,” he says.
He says a blue and white porcelain plate, amber glassware, and antique brass candlesticks may not technically match, but they can all contribute to a table that feels warm, traveled, and inviting.
2. Shop Your Own Home
Not only is the anti-algorithm table more exciting, but it’s also easier on the checkbook. Event planner Emily Reno says to shop your own home before buying anything new. “You might be surprised by what you can put together just by using things you already have and mixing them in a different way,” she says. Take stock of your dishes, glassware, candles, or holiday decorations that you wouldn't normally think to put together. “That's really the beauty of this look,” she says.
3. Add Vintage Touches
Second to your home is the thrift store, which is ripe with items that’ll round out your hosting needs. “You can find individual plates, interesting glassware, candleholders, or other decorative pieces and mix them together,” Reno says. “I also love the idea of borrowing things from friends or family, especially if you're hosting a larger dinner and don't have enough place settings for everyone.”
4. Weave in the Unexpected
Perhaps one of the best parts of anti-algorithm tablescapes is that they incorporate funky little details and unexpected items that instantly add character. Maybe it’s a weird little vase you just couldn't resist, a wow-worthy platter you inherited from your Great Aunt, or a whimsical detail that sparks conversations.
Morgan Montgomery, event planner and co-owner of Paisley & Jade, even recommends adding a tabletop lamp. ‘They don't only enhance ambiance, but funky ones—we're partial to fringe lamps right now—will add an unexpected pop to the decor,” she says.
