Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most widely celebrated holidays across South Asia and among the global diaspora. Because Diwali follows the lunar calendar, it typically falls between October and November—this year, the celebration begins on October 20, 2025.
The five-day festival honors the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. In many regions, it’s also observed as the start of the new year. Each region in the subcontinent has various religious stories and tales about why Diwali is celebrated. Though most commonly associated with Hinduism, similar observances are also marked by Jains and some Buddhists, while Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas during the same period.
In total, more than a billion people around the world observe the festival by gathering with loved ones, sharing home-cooked meals, cleaning their houses, lighting small clay lamps called diyas, performing acts of dana (charitable giving) and seva (selfless service), and exchanging gifts. Sweets and dried fruits are typical Diwali presents, but gift-giving has become a lot more creative, thoughtful, and personable over the years.
Ahead, we curated the best Diwali gifts for 2025 for friends, family, kids, and every loved one in your life. Our guide features products from Asian-owned or founded brands, including picks for the beauty lovers, adorable activities for kids, and of course, a few foodie gifts.
