How We Tested

Over a rigorous six-month evaluation process, our experts got hands-on with every submission, often in multiple ways. Much of the assessment took place in the Lab, for example running stain tests on countertops or measuring a paint’s scratch-resistance. Our engineers also reviewed technical data submitted by brands to verify claims around performance, safety, and sustainability.

Style plays a huge role in remodeling, so we also called on GH's design mavens, led by Home Design Director Monique Valeris, for their take on aesthetics, for example assessing the texture of new siding materials or the grain variation of various decking materials.

Last but not least, we sent products into the field to see how they perform in real-world conditions. Our trio of industry experts—homebuilder and developer Fernando Pagés Ruiz, contractor and real estate developer Marc Savatzky, and DIY influencer Renee Bruner—installed dozens of materials, including roofing, fencing, faucets, and more. Our panel of consumer testers put smaller wares, like power tools and smart home devices, through their paces to see how helpful they are around the house. Here are some examples of tests that were performed:
