I can still remember the smell of my high school cafeteria—a strange but unforgettable blend of grease, melted cheese, sanitizer and adolescence. But more than that, I remember loading my lunch tray with combinations of food that had no business sharing the same plate, yet somehow always did.
The cafeteria was also where I got my first lessons in negotiation—trading chips, bargaining for desserts, and stretching lunch money when it ran low. By the time last period lunch rolled around (my unlucky slot), hunger had turned into something close to desperation. And still, that room buzzed with energy. It was where plans were made, friendships solidified, and the occasional musical performance broke out, all over a tray of food.
Whether your lunch came from the line or from home, school lunchtime was never dull. It also wasn’t exactly nutritious. Now that we’ve (mostly) moved on from mystery ingredients and toward better options, it’s worth revisiting the meals we secretly miss, even if we’re not entirely proud of it.
So grab a seat as we revisit 13 school lunch favorites we can’t quite forget. No lunch money required.
1. Rectangular pizza
If you didn’t have pizza at least twice a week in school, what were you even doing? I can’t explain how this was fuel for kids, but it was. There was something extra special about the rectangular shape, too – like getting more bang for your buck that was consistently satisfying.
2. Chicken nuggets/chicken fingers
These with dipping sauces were a solid option. Especially if you were lucky enough to get the full chicken fingers, which I personally liked more than the traditional nuggets. Best of all, our lunch servers didn’t ration the nuggets. They just dumped a handful onto our trays, which was awesome.
3. Sloppy Joes
My relationship with this entree mostly existed within the confines of my own home. However, I watched many kids stain their shirts in an effort to enjoy big bites while getting away clean. No such luck as the remnants of this delicious school lunch stuck with you no matter what.

4. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
I may or may not still eat these today as a grown adult. One of the quintessential sandwiches ever created, it always hit the spot right out of the lunchbox. Add chips and milk on the side, and you're good for the day. Strawberry jam lovers, stand up!
5. Lunchables
Though these have gotten considerably more robust in recent years, the old-school cracker, meat and cheese combinations still feel like home. We would have competitions to see who could make the best stacks and eat them without them falling apart. And engaging in heavy cookie negotiations was no joking matter
6. Snack packs
Sweet or salty packaged snacks like Teddy Grahams and fruit snacks were great treasures to find in your lunch. Depending on the flavor or brand, you could have valuable trade options on your hands. Or, you could simply enjoy them yourself. They did go quickly, so savoring was a must.
7. Lunch lady brownies
The square fudgey treats lovingly known as the lunch lady brownies were always a hit. Whether packaged or fresh, they were a coveted dessert to partake in at the end of lunch. I remember saving mine for the bus ride home, which meant they would be warm and extra soft.
8. Pudding cups/Jell-o
It’s hard to remember when school lunches didn’t include pudding cups or Jell-O. I remember being jealous of kids who had the chocolate/vanilla pudding combo. And with the many fruit flavors that Jell-O offered, it was fun trying to convince parents that it was a solid (kinda) fruit substitute.

9. French toast sticks
I get that French toast sticks might’ve been an entrée instead of a side in most schools. But it served as both in mine. Besides, I wasn’t early enough to get the school breakfast, so I grabbed it later as a lunch snack or dessert on the side. Win-win.
10. Tater tots
Tater tots and ketchup would have the whole cafeteria on lock. I don’t know what it was about these thimble-shaped hash browns, but they were the best. They paired great with entrées like hot dogs, burgers or Sloppy Joes. Or you could pop them into your mouth solo and be content.
11. Milk/chocolate milk
Milk has been a school lunch staple since time began, so this one is both nostalgic and current. I drank chocolate milk during my school lunches, which would sometimes clash with the food flavors. But it wasn’t enough for me to care. Chocolate-flavored calcium was just as good to me.
12. Chocolate-flavored drinks
Is it chocolate milk? No, but it sure does remind you of childhood, and particularly school lunch. I was on a regular rotation of Yoo-hoo and Nestle Quik in school. And once the strawberry and vanilla flavors came into play, good luck with expecting me to choose water with lunch.
13. Fruit-flavored drinks
Before the prevalence of healthier 100% juice offerings from brands like Honest Kids and Juicy Juice, we often drank Hi-C, Sunny D and Little Hugs with lunch. These sugary beverages have since been proven not to be the best options for daily consumption, but kids loved them and their branding.
