From the Rothschilds’ financial empire to the Kennedys’ impact on American politics and even the Kardashian-Jenner dynasty in modern pop culture, these families’ stories are filled with triumph, tragedy and plenty of intrigue.
And like any family history, there’s more than what’s written in the history books—there’s local lore, whispered rumors and a few secrets along the way. Ahead, we’re diving into classic family names with fascinating histories worth knowing.
The Astor Family
Meaning "thunder God," the Astor name commands respect and awe due to its rich historical significance. The name is synonymous with wealth, a legacy that dates back to 1887, when John Jacob Astor IV, the son of William Astor, built the iconic Astoria Hotel in New York. The Astor name also holds a place in history as one of the passengers aboard the Titanic.
The Rockefeller Family
You may have heard of Rockefeller Center in New York City, famous for its stunning Christmas tree, shopping and seasonal activities like ice skating. The center is named after John D. Rockefeller Sr., who is recognized as the world's first dollar billionaire, primarily through the oil industry. Over time, the Rockefeller family has also been involved in various other sectors, including politics.
However, people may not know that his wife, Laura Spelman Rockefeller, was passionate about education and founded the illustrious Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. Their daughter, Edith, married into the McCormick family. Her father-in-law, Cyrus McCormick, was the inventive mind behind the horse-drawn reaper, a device that truly transformed farming practices.
The DuPont Family
DuPont is a well-known French last name meaning “someone from the bridge.” It's also the family name of one of America's wealthiest families. The DuPont family established a gunpowder manufacturer back in 1802 by E.I. du Pont, who fled France for the U.S. during the French Revolution. Today, the company is a leading chemical producer in the U.S., famous for inventing nylon, Kevlar and rayon.
The Vanderbilt Family
The name Vanderbilt, of Dutch origin, carries a significant cultural weight. While it may be a charming choice for a little boy's first or middle name, its meaning —' someone who lives by a low hill' — is just a part of its rich history. The name is deeply intertwined with wealth in America, dating back to the influential patriarch Cornelius Vanderbilt. For those less familiar with his legacy, the names of fashion designer Gloria Vanderbilt and her son, the renowned journalist Anderson Cooper, may provide a familiar connection.
The Kennedy Family
Families with fascinating histories often come with lore and scandals. The Kennedys, a well-known family for generations, trace their roots to patriarch Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. After tragic events like the assassinations of John and Robert Kennedy, the family became linked to the so-called Kennedy Curse. This curse also included other tragedies, such as car accidents, plane crashes and Rosemary Kennedy's lobotomy, which left her disabled. Yet, despite all the stories and curses, the family is also recognized for its positive contributions, such as Eunice Kennedy, who founded the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the Special Olympics that started in her backyard as Camp Shriver.
The Kardashian Family
Absolutely, including the Kardashians in a roundup of classic families makes perfect sense. They've truly carved out a unique place in entertainment across multiple generations. Even before we spent Sunday nights glued to E! watching “Keeping Up With The Kardashians,” many of us were introduced to Robert Kardashian Sr. around 1995. Rob was already a successful attorney and a key part of the legal team for the widely covered 1995 O.J. Simpson murder trial.

The Luce Family
American journalism as we know it today was the brainchild of Chinese-American business mogul Henry Luce. He has been credited with cofounding or founding several publications, including Time, Fortune and Life magazines. Additionally, Luce’s umbrella of publications includes House & Home and Sports Illustrated. His wife, Clare Booth Luce, was an author, editor, and playwright. Her most famous play, “The Woman,” was praised for its all-female cast. Mrs. Luce's deep interest in politics resulted in her election to Congress to represent Connecticut. Moreover, her political career led her to Europe, where she wrote direct, personal accounts of World War II.
The Rothschild Family
Let’s explore the Rothschild family, originating from Germany. Mayer Amschel Rothschild, born in 1744 in Judengasse, the Jewish ghetto of Frankfurt—one of Europe's oldest Jewish ghettos—gave the family name. 'Rothschild' derives from ''zum roten Schild,'' meaning ''at the sign of the red shield'' in German. Mayer and his five sons became well-known across Europe as luxury and coin dealers before venturing into banking, setting the foundation for modern international banking. They’re also known for investments and philanthropy.
What’s truly interesting about this family is their unique approach to preserving their generational wealth: through marrying within the family. Yes, you read that right. Back then, this was a common strategy among wealthy families to help them maintain their social and economic status. It’s believed that Mayer explicitly included this practice in his will to ensure their continued prosperity.
