Every year, the American Kennel Club puts out a list ranking the popularity of every dog breed. It’s a fun annual snapshot of what’s hot in the canine world, based on how many dogs are registered as each kind of breed.
While the top 10 dog breeds commonly stay the same year over year (the lab was the top dog in America for 31 years straight!), sometimes there are surprising shifts. In the 2025 rankings, one particularly adorable dog breed is working its way up the popularity list, breaking into the top 5.
The lucky dog is, drumroll please…the Dachshund!
These long, wiggly dogs are known for their small bodies but big personalities. Their undeniable charm and adorably comic looks have made them increasingly popular, especially on social media. Pet owners agree that their floppy ears and stumpy legs are too cute to pass up, pushing Dachshunds back into one of the top spots for popularity.
The last time the Dachshund was in the top 5 most popular dog breeds was in 2003. After that point, the small dog breed's popularity declined until it finally dropped out of the top 10 in 2014. Dachshunds fell as far as #13 in the rankings from 2015 to 2017 before slowly climbing in popularity again in recent years. Now they are once again one of the top dogs, dethroning the poodle to take #5 on the popularity list.
However, both dogs rank behind the number one winner: the French Bulldog.
Frenchies have been crowned the most popular dog breed in America for the fourth year in a row! They first took the title in 2022 and have held strong at the top ever since. Dog lovers just can’t get enough of their adaptable nature, playful energy, and iconic bat ears.
This is the full list of the top 10 most popular dog breeds in 2025:
- French Bulldog
- Labrador Retriever
- Golden Retriever
- German Shepherd Dog

Will the French Bulldog continue to reign supreme next year, or will the Dachshund keep climbing the ranks to eventually become the most popular dog breed in America?
We can’t wait to find out.
