16 best dishwashers for spotless crockery, tested on our dirtiest plates and pans

best dishwashers

Stacking wars aside, if you aren't a fan of washing up (who is?) and have the space, there are plenty of compelling reasons to add one of the very best dishwashers to your kitchen.

While an investment at first, they can be a real time-saver and provide a more thorough clean than hand-washing, thanks to their higher operating temperatures and stronger detergents that kill more bacteria.

A good dishwasher can also save you money in the long run; research suggests they use less water than hand-washing when tackling a whole meal’s worth of dirty dishes. But how do you know which machine to invest in? That's where we come in.

Best dishwashers to buy in 2026

Our experts dirtied a lot of plates, pans and cutlery in the Good Housekeeping Institute lab to test the market-leading models. Find our in-depth dishwasher reviews below, along with everything you need to consider before you shop.

All running cost calculations are based on current energy and water costs of 26.11p per kWh and approximately 0.3p per litre.

how we test dishwashers

How we test dishwashers

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we rate each dishwasher on its performance across a standard, economy and intensive cycle.

To do this, we stain a range of glassware, crockery, cutlery, pots and pans using common and notoriously difficult-to-remove substances – think lipstick on a glass and burnt pasta sauce on a pyrex dish – to judge how well each appliance cleans.

Each stain is weighed and precisely applied, and we use the same detergent for every cycle to ensure consistent results.

For normal and economy cycles, we make sure the dishwasher can fit the maximum number of place settings suggested by the manufacturer, while we use fewer in intensive programmes.

We record the water and energy consumption for every cycle, before finally considering the controls, the breadth of settings and how useful they are, design (will it fit seamlessly into your kitchen) and how clear and helpful the instructions are in our overall score.

Best dishwasher and best integrated dishwasher

Miele G5851 SCVi Integrated Dishwasher, Cleansteel

Pros

  • Excellent cleaning performance across all cycles
  • Normal and eco cycles both very efficient
  • Sturdy, well-designed build

Cons

  • Investment buy

Score: 93/100

This premium dishwasher from Miele hardly dropped a mark in our performance tests, achieving outstanding cleanliness in every single cycle. The normal and eco programmes breezed through tricky foods like dried-on porridge and egg, and the intensive programme was even able to clean burnt-on jam and tomato sauce from Pyrex dishes.

It’s exceptionally energy and water efficient too, costing on average 17p for an eco cycle, 26p for a normal cycle and 35p for intensive. Our one criticism (aside from the high price tag) is the poorer drying performance after the eco cycle – but you could mitigate this with the extra dry function. It’s a worthy winner – one that should justify the cost across many years of reliable performance.

Pros

  • Comparable performance to the more expensive 5851 (above)
  • Energy and water efficient
  • Intuitive, straightforward controls

Cons

  • Progress indicator doesn’t stay lit up during cycle

Score: 92/100

As the lower-priced sibling of the model above, this dishwasher dropped just one point in our tests compared to Miele's more premium version. The eco cycle’s cleaning performance stood out, achieving spotless dishes – though it did leave them a little damp. The normal and intensive cycles shifted stubborn foods easily too, and left our plates very dry.

It earned full marks for water and energy efficiency, costing just 18p for an eco cycle and 26p for a normal cycle (remarkably similar to the 5851). Aside from a cutlery drawer with a slightly smaller capacity, we found very little difference between this Miele and our winner – and we’d say this is the better value model.

Bosch Series 4 SMS4EMW06G Freestanding Dishwasher, White

Pros

  • Excellent cleaning across all cycles
  • Very efficient eco programme
  • Easy to load and intuitive to use

Cons

  • Tall wine glasses don’t fit
  • Pricier than many freestanding models

Score: 91/100

This freestanding dishwasher is much easier to install and maintain than an integrated model, plus it’s more affordable than the two models above. It put in an excellent performance in our tests – the normal wash shifted almost all the stains we’d added while costing an efficient 26p per cycle. The eco programme was similarly effective at a thrifty 18p per cycle.

This model also had the edge over the integrated Bosch Series 4 below when it came to tougher jobs. Its intensive cycle did a great job on our heavily burnt pans – and even this more powerful programme cost a reasonable 35p to run. It dried well, too, and our testers found it straightforward to load, with smooth-running baskets and responsive controls. Just note that although the upper rack can be lowered, wine glasses are too tall for it – but overall, this is a great all-rounder.

Pros

  • Excellent everyday cleaning and drying
  • Good value for a feature-rich integrated model
  • Flexible installation and smart features

Cons

  • Tall wine glasses don’t fit
  • Intensive cycle was less consistent

Score: 90/100

As our best dishwasher under £500, this integrated Bosch scored just one point less than its freestanding sibling above but is more affordable. We were impressed by its everyday cleaning performance, with the eco cycle a particular highlight – it washed and dried very well while costing around 22p per cycle. The normal wash was fairly economical, too, at roughly 28p. The intensive programme was less consistent, occasionally spreading burnt egg speckles around the load.

As well as app control, this dishwasher comes with a few well-considered features – for instance, the brand’s VarioHinge lets the cabinet door slide as it opens, helping it clear low plinths and making the dishwasher easier to integrate into awkward kitchen layouts. It also has an adjustable basket (though our wine glasses were still too tall) as well as a light that projects on to the floor so you know it’s running. It’s an excellent mid-range integrated model that’s well-designed and easy to use.

Pros

  • Very spacious and versatile with adjustable sections
  • Strong performance at a good price

Cons

  • Energy consumption was relatively high on normal cycle

Score: 90/100

Though not as cheap as others we've tested, this mid-range model from Hoover offers great value for money. The normal and eco wash seriously impressed our testers, shifting almost all stains save for a few tricky dried porridge spots. We recommend sticking to the economy wash if you can, which costs just 20p to run and scores full marks for both water and electricity usage.

It can hold up to 16 place settings, making it one of the largest capacities we’ve tested – a great pick for big households. A removable cutlery basket, foldable sections and height-adjustable racks offer lots of versatility when you’re stacking it. Plus, the instructions come with plenty of tips on how to load everything properly to get the best results. This dishwasher also connects to the hOn app, which can suggest the best programmes for saving energy.

Pros

  • Doesn’t need much energy or water, especially on normal and eco cycles
  • Great drying performance

Cons

  • Cutlery basket gets overcrowded quickly

Score: 89/100

This is great freestanding dishwasher, and it will set you back a lot less than other WiFi connected models on our list. So, if you want smart tech at a lower price, this is a savvy pick. Our experts found it quiet and efficient – its eco cycle used 0.76 kWh and 11 litres of water, equating to a cost of about 23p. It also has a child lock – helpful if you have any inquisitive hands in your kitchen.

When it comes to stacking dishes, its racks are adjustable, giving you some flexibility, although testers noted that the cutlery basket fills up quickly. Crucially, it was a reliable cleaner across all three cycles we tried in the lab – there was the occasional speck of food residue, but most dishes scrubbed up nicely. It also did a stellar drying job, so you can empty it and put items straight back to use if needed.

Pros

  • Excellent performance for the price
  • Clear, responsive controls

Cons

  • Drying performance was mixed

Score: 88/100

This Bosch dishwasher delivered an excellent performance at a significantly lower price point compared to the premium models. Its cleaning was particularly strong on the normal cycle, which was also very efficient, costing 31p to run. The economy and intensive washes were solid too, while the quick cycle achieved great results on a half load in just one hour.

Drying performance seems to be the main compromise with this model, with all cycles leaving many items wet at the end – but it’s not a big issue if you don’t mind letting your plates air-dry for a while. Our testers also appreciated the easy-to-load layout, smooth-running baskets, and intuitive controls.

This model is missing some premium features such as a top cutlery tray for sharp items (there’s only a cutlery basket), but it does have a handy countdown timer. A great value pick.

Pros

  • Strong washing performance on every cycle, but especially on eco mode
  • Clear, logical and responsive controls

Cons

  • Timer countdown is only available via the app

Score: 87/100

This integrated dishwasher from New Zealand brand Fisher & Paykel delivered a strong all-round performance in our tests, particularly on its normal and eco cycles, where it left our crockery and cutlery impressively clean. It’s roomy too, holding up to 16 place settings, and its adjustable racks, sturdy baskets and top cutlery tray make loading straightforward. We also liked the responsive controls and clear instructions.

Eco mode was particularly efficient, costing an average of 23p per cycle, though drying wasn’t quite as consistent here as it was on the normal and intensive settings. Glassware occasionally needed extra attention and connecting to the app could be clearer, but overall, this is a very well-designed and capable dishwasher.

Pros

  • Unique, retro design
  • Very efficient eco cycle; very effective normal cycle

Cons

  • Picks up fingerprints easily, especially in the black colourway

Score: 86/100

This dishwasher stood out for its economy wash, dropping just one point on test and producing gleaming results. This cycle is water and energy efficient too, costing just 21p to run.

We were treated to sparkling glassware across every cycle and the intensive programme did an excellent job with our pans; there was no trace of rice or scrambled egg. Some burnt-on pasta sauce did withstand the wash though.

We liked the versatile set-up; there’s an easy-to-load cutlery basket and drawer, with the latter ideal for larger utensils. The top tray is also adjustable and both trays boast collapsible racks.

The sleek design will suit if you own other Smeg appliances, and our tester also found it quiet in use.

Pros

  • Soiling sensor means cycle is only as long as it needs to be
  • Clear light and noise indicators

Cons

  • Wine glasses are a tight fit in the middle drawer

Score: 84/100

With room for 14 place settings and three drawers, this integrated dishwasher has plenty of room – but still fits into a standard sized bay. Testers liked the way it shines a light on the floor so you can easily see that it’s running, and were fans of the soil level sensor, which adjusts the length of the cycle to suit the crockery that’s being cleaned.

The extra features and capacity don't dim this dishwasher's cleaning power; food residue was banished from most items across all three cycles our experts trialled. The intensive cycle in particular did a stellar job of lifting even the most stubborn burnt-on stains from our dishes. To save energy, stick to the efficient eco wash, which costs just 21p to run. Overall, this is a great integrated model that won't break the bank.

Pros

  • Excellent eco cleaning for the price
  • Auto Dry feature dries dishes more thoroughly
  • Tall wine glasses fit comfortably

Cons

  • Normal cycle uses a lot of water
  • Couldn’t fit the advertised 14 place settings

Score: 82/100

This freestanding dishwasher offers good value for money, especially if you plan to use its eco programme regularly – it removed almost all our dried-on stains and cost around 19p per cycle, putting its eco running costs in line with much pricier models. Its normal programme was less efficient at around 33p per wash, while the intensive cycle cost around 39p and was better suited to everyday grime than the toughest burnt-on cookware.

Note that we couldn’t quite fit the advertised 14 place settings inside (12 would be more realistic), but we were able to comfortably fit tall wine glasses in. Testers liked that the door automatically opens to help moisture escape, too. The controls take a little getting used to, but overall, it’s a capable dishwasher, with very strong eco performance.

Pros

  • Highly efficient economy cycle
  • Large capacity of 16 place settings

Cons

  • Top basket and cutlery rack were prone to getting stuck

Score: 81/100

This dishwasher impressed our testers with its ability to shift burnt-on food from pans on the intensive cycle, something most models struggle with. This could be down to the dual spray arms and high-pressure water jets, which are designed to provide a more powerful clean.

Just take note – although the normal and intensive washes performed well, they both used a lot of energy and water, costing 40p and 43p respectively to run. So, unless you have heavily soiled dishes, we recommend sticking to the eco wash, which is remarkably efficient at just 16p per cycle.

This is also a great dishwasher for smart homes, as it can be controlled with Alexa and Google Home (want to speak to your dishwasher? Now you can), or via the helpful app.

Pros

  • Great value
  • Easy to use once you know what the icons mean

Cons

  • Inefficient layout
  • No progress indicator

Score: 80/100

This budget dishwasher put in a very respectable performance in our tests, though predictably, there are some tradeoffs for the price. It’s not the most energy or water efficient, costing on average 27p for an eco cycle and 37p for normal. Our testers also found the layout difficult to load efficiently, and couldn't fit the recommended 13 place settings – 11 was more realistic. The meaning of the cycle icons in the control panel was often unclear, too.

But despite these design issues, it did a great job of cleaning everyday dishes, leaving our grubby plates almost entirely clean except for some tricky dried-on porridge. We like the smooth-running baskets, and the top one is adjustable to accommodate tall glasses if needed.

The intensive wash struggled with our heavily soiled items, however, so it may be best for use with regular plates instead of saucepans and baking dishes. Overall, it’s a good pick at an outstanding price.

Pros

  • Excellent value
  • Spray arms and filter are easy to remove and clean

Cons

  • High running costs
  • Smaller capacity than others

Score: 79/100

This is the most affordable full-size dishwasher we’ve tested to date, and while it makes a few compromises, it delivers solid results for the price. Its cleaning performance was generally good across all cycles – the eco programme proved the most reliable for everyday use. Running costs were high though, even on the eco setting, which cost 33p a cycle – nearly double that of our winning models’ eco programmes.

Its drying performance was mixed, with some dishes emerging wet from the normal and eco cycles, although our dishes dried well on the intensive programme. Our testers also would have liked a clearer interface – the icons are a little faint, and some programme names are unclear. The baskets run smoothly though, and you can adjust the top rack to make space for tall glasses. It’s a no-frills, budget-friendly dishwasher that gets the basics right.

  • Eco cycle is energy and water efficient

Cons

  • Doesn’t fit the advertised 16 place settings – we could only fit 12

Score: 77/100

This dishwasher claims to be ultra-hygienic, thanks to an LED system that sanitises your crockery without the need for high heat – great for baby bottles, pet bowls and generally preventing smells. It’s a very sleek freestanding model, with in-door controls and a countdown timer that shines onto the floor.

In the lab, cleaning and drying performance was solid, though a little inconsistent at times. The intensive cycle struggled with burnt-on foods, making this dishwasher best suited for lighter everyday soiling.

The 59-minute quick programme was a standout, delivering cleaning comparable to that of a standard cycle while using less water and energy to run (it cost 31p on test). While the intensive cycle and normal cycle were costly to run (51p and 43p respectively), the eco cycle stood out for its efficiency, costing just 20p on average. It’s a solid dishwasher overall and may be worth the price if sanitisation is a big concern for you.

  • Great value

Cons

  • High running costs on normal and intensive cycles

Score: 76/100

This dishwasher is a straightforward, budget-friendly choice. The eco cycle was a highlight, giving good cleaning results across the board, whereas the normal and intensive programmes tackled everyday messes competently, but left some stubborn stains and dampness. All three cycles were quite expensive to run, costing 46p for a normal cycle, 27p for an eco cycle and and 48p for intensive.

Our experts appreciated the responsive controls, clear instructions, and easy-load baskets that can accommodate tall glasses. That said, the lack of a progress indicator and slightly confusing dial markings were a little frustrating, and drying performance wasn’t consistent across all cycles. Overall, though, it’s a solid option for those on a budget.

Why you should trust the Good Housekeeping Institute

The Good Housekeeping Institute’s testing is entirely independent. Brands cannot influence our results, ensuring every recommendation is based solely on rigorous, unbiased testing and consumer benefit.

Our dishwasher tests are some of the lengthiest we carry out in our lab – our team spends days staining crockery and running cycles on repeat to make sure we get a thorough picture of what each dishwasher is like to use day-in day-out. This is all overseen by our homes testing manager, Blossom Boothroyd.

She then passes the results on to our senior homes and lifestyle writer, Megan Geall, or our homes writer, Jasmine Vorley, who transform them into shoppable reviews. Megan and Jasmine have written about hundreds of homes products, and look after all our appliance buying guides.

best dishwashers

What are the different types of dishwashers?

Freestanding – These standalone appliances can be placed wherever you have plumbing access and can be moved as needed. They tend to be cheaper to buy, install and maintain than integrated dishwashers.

Integrated – These built-in dishwashers are installed behind a kitchen cabinet, so they blend in with the rest of your design. Fully integrated models conceal the controls on the top edge of the door, while semi-integrated models keep the control panel visible on the front for easier access. They look seamless but have to be installed as part of the kitchen.

Slimline – Narrower than standard models (usually 45cm wide), slimline dishwashers are designed for smaller kitchens or households with less washing up. They offer fewer place settings but still include many of the same programmes and features as full-size machines. Slimline dishwashers can be integrated or freestanding. See our top buys in our best slimline dishwashers roundup.

Countertop – These are compact freestanding models that sit on a kitchen worktop and connect to the tap. Best for small households, renters or kitchens without space for a full-size appliance.

How to choose a dishwasher

These are the factors to consider before you buy.

Size – Standard full-sized dishwashers typically hold around 14 place settings, making them a good choice for families or frequent entertainers. If you’re a household of one or two, or you’re short on space, you may want to consider one of our experts’ best slimline dishwashers – these hold around 10 place settings.

Integrated versus freestanding – Integrated dishwashers are built into cabinetry and concealed behind a matching cupboard door for a seamless look. Freestanding models stand alone with a visible front panel, making them more conspicuous but easier (and cheaper) to install, move and repair.

Energy efficiency – A dishwasher with a better energy rating will be cheaper to run – just bear in mind that it will likely cost more upfront. In real terms, if you run your dishwasher twice a week on the eco cycle, an A-rated dishwasher could cost around £17 per year in energy and water costs, whereas an E-rated model could cost around £36 per year. Check our dishwasher reviews for the running costs we measured in the lab.

Washing cycles – All dishwashers have normal, eco and intensive cycles as standard. But you may want to look for extra cycles depending on your needs, such as a hygiene wash for baby bottles or a delicate wash for glasses or fine china.

Extra features – Depending on your individual needs, you may want to consider the following extras, too:

  • Adjustable racks: this means the top drawer can be lowered to make space for tall glasses.
  • Fold-down tines: this allows you to flatten the bottom plate racks, making space for large saucepans.
  • Child lock: prevents children from fiddling with the buttons or opening the door mid-cycle.
  • Delay start: this allows you to start the dishwasher at a set time. It’s ideal for running your machine during off-peak utility hours, or if you want to avoid noise at certain times.
  • Smart capabilities: Some dishwashers connect to WiFi, so you can control them via an app, allowing you to start them remotely. With some machines, you can also track energy usage, download extra programmes, adjust the intensity of a wash, and run diagnostic tests.

Dishwasher settings explained

With minimal settings, dishwashers are generally simple to use. Normal, eco and intensive cycles come as standard, but it’s worth knowing the specific purpose of each to optimise your dishwasher’s cleaning potential.

  • Normal: Best for daily use, this cycle removes standard dirt and food stains using water that’s around 60-65°C.
  • Eco: Best for lightly soiled plates and cutlery, economy cycles take longer to complete but use less water. The water is still hot, at 50-55°C.
  • Intensive: Best for tackling stubborn baked-on food (and cleaning your dishwasher), this runs at temperatures of up to 70°C.
  • Delicate: Best for glassware and delicate china with a lower water temperature.
  • Quick wash: Best for when your dishes aren’t too dirty and you need them cleaned speedily.
  • Hygiene: Best for items that need sterilising, such as baby products or chopping boards. This programme will wash at a high temperature.
  • Sensor wash: Found on dishwashers with built-in sensors, the programme time, temperature and amount of water will adjust according to how dirty the dishes are.

Are dishwashers energy-efficient?

“Modern dishwashers are designed to be both water and energy efficient, particularly when used with full loads,” says Jade Golding-Gault, appliance expert at AO.com. “In many cases, they can use less water than washing by hand, with some models using as little as nine to 10 litres per cycle on standard programmes.”

All dishwashers are given an energy rating to help you compare models and find the most efficient option. The scale runs from A to G, with A being the most economical. Even appliances with lower ratings are still fairly efficient, as the labelling system was updated in 2021 to reflect advances in technology.

“Choosing a model with a higher energy rating can help reduce electricity consumption and running costs over time,” says Jade. “Eco programmes are typically the most efficient option, although they often take longer to complete because they use lower temperatures and less water.”

To maximise efficiency, always run a full load and stick to eco mode where possible. Scrape plates before loading but avoid rinsing them under the tap, which wastes water. Soaking stubborn stains beforehand can also help improve results without increasing energy use.

Why do dishwashers need salt and rinse aid?

“Dishwasher salt helps the appliance’s built-in water softener reduce the minerals found in hard water, such as calcium and magnesium, which can cause limescale build-up,” says Jade. “This helps maintain cleaning performance, protects internal components and can prolong the lifespan of the appliance.

“Rinse-aid helps the water run off dishes and glasses smoothly without forming droplets, reducing streaks and allowing for faster drying.”

The verdict: which dishwasher is the best?

Our best dishwasher overall is the Miele G 5851 SCVi Active Plus Stainless Steel Dishwasher, which impressed us with its cleaning power and efficiency.

The Miele is an integrated model, so if you prefer the flexibility of a freestanding machine, the best one we’ve tested is the Bosch Series 4 SMS4EMW06G Freestanding Dishwasher.

If you’re on a tighter budget, we recommend the Bosch SMS26AW08G Series 2 Dishwasher (our best value freestanding dishwasher) or the Beko DVN04X20W Full Size Dishwasher (our best budget buy).
