best handheld fans

Every year, when the annual summer heatwave hits the UK, we go from moaning about the rain and cold to complaining about the heat and soaring temperatures. Because, let’s face it, we’re just not built for it.

That’s where the best portable fans can come in, helping to cool us down when we’re out and about on public transport (we’ve spotted a lot on the Tube) or sending a lovely breeze over us while we sit at our desks.

We’ve been busy testing them at the Good Housekeeping Institute and out and about, to find the best, most lightweight and versatile models.

What is the best handheld fan?

    how we test handheld fans

How we test portable and handheld fans

Firstly, we test each handheld fan in the lab and judge them on the following factors.

    • Air flow: Our experts measure the speed of each fan with an anemometer and look at the difference between the fan’s highest and lowest setting to see how much control you have over the air strength.
    • Noise levels: We measure the sound levels in decibels with the fan on its highest and lowest setting (because no one wants to drive their fellow commuters mad).
    • Battery life: We use the fans at full power until the battery runs out to check the brand’s battery life claims.
    • Energy consumption: We charge them from empty to a full tank, to find out which will cost the least to use in the long term. We also time how long it takes to charge from empty, so you know how long you’ll have to wait around.

Our testers then try each handheld fan out as part of their regular routine for a week, noting down everything they love – or don’t – about the product. Finally, we assess the design, ease of use and the clarity and helpfulness of any accompanying product information, before awarding each fan a final score out of 100.

    Pros

    • Controls are simple to use and adjust
    • Lightweight and easy to hold
    • The display shows the fan speed and current battery status

    Cons

    • Air flow isn’t that wide due to its small build
    • Battery life isn’t as long as others

    Score: 95/100

Weighing just 119 grams, this compact, handheld fan is easy to carry on the go. The box includes a wrist strap for added comfort, although there’s no neck strap, so you can’t go hands-free.

Despite being small, it’s surprisingly powerful. The highest of the five settings measured up to 3m/s, providing a strong gust of air, which proved effective on a hot day. It wasn’t particularly noisy either, making it a solid choice if you need a fan for the commute.

The battery only lasted four hours in the lab (when used on the third speed setting), so it won’t last the whole day if you’re using it constantly. However, for journeys to and from work or trips to the shops, this little fan is a great summer sidekick.

    • Well-built and seems long-lasting

    Cons

    • No quiet mode

    Score: 92/100

With a massive 100 different speeds (yes, you read that right), this aesthetically pleasing handheld fan (it comes in six shades) was a hit from the get-go. Panellists loved its cooling powers with one saying it made them feel more comfortable ‘straight away‘ on a hot day on the bus.

That’s the benefit of a handheld model, too. This lightweight fan fits easily in your bag and even comes with an attachable travel lanyard so you won’t lose it on the way.

Overall, it was very easy to use, and boasts a digital screen that displays the wind speed and battery power. Speaking of the battery, it lasted three hours on the highest setting so you won’t be caught short on your commute home, either.

    Pros

    • Simple controls that are easy to adjust
    • Feels well-made
    • Has a wrist strap for cooling on the go
    • Quiet

    Cons

    • The QR code takes you to the wrong online product manual, but the printed quick-start guide explains everything you need to use this fan

    Score: 91/100

Fed up of needing to charge your portable fan after every use? You may want to swap to this Blueair handheld, which can last up to 32 hours on its lowest setting. On its top speed, it gave us five and a half hours of cooling power too, an impressive feat for a compact design.

Plus, it has a whopping 100 speeds to choose from, ranging from 0.19m/s to 2.1m/s, and our panellists were fans of the digital display that tells you the setting and the battery life. We found it easy to adjust everything and liked that you can tilt it, so you can also use it as a desk fan.

On the downside, the airflow is quite concentrated, with some panellists wanting a wider cooling effect. However, it did keep us comfortable without making much noise (it only reached 45.5db on high, which is similar to a refrigerator hum), so you won’t disturb people around you when out and about.

    Pros

    Cons

    Score: 87/100

You’ll be the envy of every person in the office or on your morning commute with this fan. It simply loops around your neck so you can keep your hands free for your phone, bag or morning coffee, and it keeps you cool by circulating air quickly and evenly through its dual-turbine motor design and the 78 air outlets distributed around the neck.

There are three wind speeds, which had noticeably different strengths; however, they weren’t as powerful as other fans we’ve tested. But we think its lightweight, intuitive design is probably worth the compromise. Our testers found it stayed on easily, too. That’s our morning commute sorted the next time a heatwave rolls around.

    Pros

    • Powerful airflow for its size
    • Battery lasted more than 2.5 hours on a medium setting in our tests
    • Lightweight and easy to carry

    Cons

    • Air intake vents sit close to where you'd naturally hold the fan
    • Distinctive design won't appeal to everyone

    Score: 87/100

This fan's design divided opinion in the lab, with some loving the look, and others finding its unconventional shape a little harder to warm to.

Aesthetics aside, it impressed us with its five speed settings, reaching airflow speeds of up to 2.8m/s on the highest setting, which kept us comfortable in the heat. The airflow is relatively focused, mainly targeting the centre of your face, but the head can be manually rotated up to 260 degrees for added flexibility.

The controls are straightforward to use and the compact design makes it easy to slip into a bag. It also comes with a neck strap, so you can keep your hands free when needed.

Despite its name, we didn’t find it especially quiet. In our tests, the noise became noticeable from the second speed setting upwards. However, if you’re using it outdoors on warm days, this shouldn’t be an issue – and it still does an effective job of keeping you cool and comfortable.

    Pros

    • Comes with a neck strap and a base
    • Fan feels well-made and robust

    Score: 86/100

This compact handheld fan comes with everything you could need for cooling. In the box, you get a neck strap for hands-free carrying on the go and a base so you can stand it up on a table. Plus, you can insert aromatherapy tablets or add your favourite essential oils for a soothing scent while you cool down.

There’s a good range of air speeds between the five settings, but our panellists found the on/off button quite small; it can be hard to press if you have large hands. We were impressed by the battery life though – it lasted nearly five and a half hours on the highest speed.

    Pros

    • Controls are accessible and responsive
    • Clear diagrams in the instructions

    Cons

    • The vibration of the fan causes it to move around when stood on a smooth surface
    • The fan guard popped off quite easily in testing

    Score: 84/100

This compact fan comes with its own phone rest so you can watch your favourite Netflix series on the commute while staying cool. There’s also a clip-on lanyard for when you need to go hands-free. The fan head is adjustable by 90 degrees too, so you can tilt it upwards and get a cooling breeze right to your head and neck.

It has five fan speeds, but our expert found it difficult to distinguish between each one in terms of strength. On the highest setting, the fan’s battery lasted three hours and 11 minutes, giving you plenty of cooling power each day, and a recharge took under three hours, which is fairly quick in comparison to others we’ve tested (despite being over the claimed charging time).

Overall, it was easy to use but lacked durability and sturdiness so make sure not to sling it around in your handbag.

    Best misting handheld fan

Shark ChillPill 3-in-1 Handheld Air Cooler

    Pros

    • Easy to use and control
    • Cooling plate and misting function are great extras
    • Comes in six colourways
    • Plenty of attachments and straps available for added versatility
    • Good range of air strengths

    Cons

    • Expensive
    • No oscillation or dedicated night mode
    • You have to change heads to swap between fan, misting, and the cooling plate, which isn’t easy on the go

    Score: 83/100

This exciting (and pretty cool looking) new handheld fan from Shark delivers powerful air flow across its 10 speed settings and lasted over an hour more than the claimed battery life (of 1 hour and 30 minutes) on its highest setting in testing.

It also has an adjustable misting function – just change to the misting head, fill the small compartment up with water, and pop one of the included wicks inside the tank and you’re good to go. Our panel loved the fine spray and appreciated the two settings – one that sprays intermittently and one that’s constant. It is worth noting that you’ll eventually need to buy replacement wicks as they need changing every four months.

This handheld fan’s other key feature is the cooling plate, which was a big hit with our panel. The metal surface claims to cool your skin by up to nine degrees, providing a quick, effective way to chill out when you need it most – and it delivered in testing.

It’s quite bulky and awkward to hold compared to other portable fans, and we found it’s a bit noisy, reaching up to 65.8dB on its highest setting (similar to the level of a dishwasher running). It's expensive too, and any extra wrist straps or hands-free attachments are sold separately. We can’t argue with its effectiveness though and the bonus features really make it stand out from the crowd. As do the range of fun colourways.

What to look for when buying a handheld fan

While it can be tempting to grab the first handheld fan you see when you’re suffering in a heatwave, there are a few things to consider before shopping to make sure you get the best option for you.

Type: Portable fan can come in slightly different forms. In this list, we’ve reviewed handheld fans, mini desk fans, and neck fans for hands-free cooling. Think about where you’re most likely to use your fan (e.g. in the office, on the commute, or at home) before choosing.

Range of speeds: Some models boast up to 100 speeds while others have as little as three. Having a wider range of speeds will give you more control, allowing you to customise the airflow to your preference.

Battery life: You don’t want your handheld fan to run out when you need it most! We’ve measured each model’s full battery life so we can compare it against the brand’s claims. That way, you know it will last the whole commute.

Noise levels: If you want to use your fan on public transport or in the office, you don’t want it to be noisy. We’ve listed the decibel reading on each fan’s highest setting in our key specs, but anything under 55dB shouldn't disturb conversations.

What's the best handheld fan for commuting on the Tube?

Our top pick for commuting is currently the Jisulife Neck Fan. In our tests, it never exceeded 52.2dB – similar to the gentle hum of a fridge – so won't disturb fellow commuters. Plus, the hands-free design makes navigating ticket barriers or carrying bags much easier.

What are the advantages of a neck fan?

We’re seeing more and more neck fans appear on the market and we’ve already tested and reviewed two models in our list above.

These cleverly designed portable fans allow you to stay cool on the go while keeping your hands free, so you can carry your, phone or even a cup of coffee at the same time. In our testing, we’ve also found neck fans very effective at cooling, as the air is being blown directly onto your neck and face at a close range.

Handheld fan vs neck fan: which is less annoying to use?

Neck fans proved popular with our testers thanks to their hands-free design, allowing you to go about your business without juggling multiple items.

That said, some panellists found the neck fans weren't quite as powerful as the best handheld fans, so they might not provide as much of a cooling effect.

Is a handheld fan loud? Can I use it in an office without bothering colleagues?

Noise levels vary significantly between different handheld fans. In our tests, the loudest model – the Jisulife Portable Handheld Fan – reached almost 80dB on its highest setting, which is comparable to a food blender. However, it offers 100 speed settings, and at the lower end, it measured around 65dB, similar to the noise level of a busy office.

If you're worried about disturbing colleagues, we recommend the Jisulife Portable Neck Fan, which registered around 52dB at its highest speed, which shouldn’t bother your colleagues.

Do portable fans use a lot of electricity?

In short, no. Every handheld fan in this list scored well in our energy efficiency testing, generally costing around one penny for a full charge from empty.

    best portable fans

The verdict: What is the best handheld fan?

Keeping cool has never been so easy. Our winning portable fan, the Aecooly Mighty Handheld Fan, is our top pick, with simple operation and an affordable price tag – you can't go wrong.

We also love the Jisulife Neck Fan, which allows you to stay cool while keeping your hands free for reading, shopping or scrolling on your phone.
