Since you don't need another thing to do before you depart for your trip abroad, we rounded up the best luggage for international travel in one guide. In the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, we put popular luggage brands to the test to determine which suitcases you should invest in. We've evaluated more than 100 pieces of luggage in the Lab and among consumer testers to determine how easy they are to pack, if they'll hold up to being shoved in the cargo hold, if the wheels roll smoothly through the airport, and more. I have brought both hardside luggage and softside bags on my own international travels to see how well each packs, zips, and rolls. Combining my personal experience and expertise, our Lab testing data, and tester feedback, I have pieced together the best luggage for your next trip abroad—the Freeform Hardside Expandable Spinner from Samsonite, our best overall luggage brand, came out on top.

Our top picks:

samsonite freeform hardside expandable spinner

Pros

  • Reasonably priced
  • Testers said it was easy to maneuver
  • Spacious interior

Cons

  • Handle wasn't as sturdy as others

WHY WE LIKE IT: This top-performing suitcase from our best overall luggage brand Samsonite has repeatedly stood out in the Textiles Lab's and our consumers' tests and is priced around $200—an incredible value.

I was impressed by how easy it was to lift and roll the bag around, even when filled with our standard packing load. This carry-on is spacious with a butterfly-opening, unfolding into two primary compartments for easy packing, and there's an additional inch of expandable storage with the pull of a zipper.

During our Lab evaluations, we liked how easy it was to pull the bag through our luggage obstacle course. The material was more prone to scratching than some others we evaluated, but the suitcase proved to be durable overall in our drop tests—that's when our drop tester machine drops the bag from a 3-foot height over and over to see how it holds up—this one resisted major damage.

WHAT TESTERS SAY: While some testers said the telescopic handle felt a bit loose, the suitcase earned high scores for maneuverability, with testers sharing feedback including "very smooth rolling," and "the wheels moved really well."

Pros

  • Held our entire packing load with room to spare
  • Lightweight so easy to lift into overhead compartment
  • Testers liked the smooth wheels

Cons

  • ABS plastic isn't as durable as other materials

WHY WE LIKE IT: This Amazon Basics suitcase is loved by both thousands of Amazon shoppers and our consumer testers who said it's worth every penny. Made of lightweight ABS plastic, the hardside suitcase isn't quite as durable as those made of polycarbonate, but the material helps to keep the cost low—under $100—so I recommend it for someone shopping on a budget.

During our Textiles Lab evaluations for durability, there were some noticeable markings in our scratch tests, but we were impressed by how well the bag maintained its shape after being released repeatedly from our drop tester. Amazon reviewers who regularly use the suitcase said it holds up over time as well.

We gave the carry-on high scores for packability, as we were able to pack our standard load of belongings (clothing, accessories, and toiletries) for a short trip with room to spare. Plus, there are interior zippered mesh pockets for easy organization, and the bag expands up to one extra inch for additional packing space.

WHAT TESTERS SAY: When our consumer testers rolled the suitcase through our obstacle course, they were wowed by how smooth the wheels were, with one describing the bag as "very easy to move."

Best Carry-On

Away The Carry-On

Pros

  • Tons of fun colors to ensure you can spot yours at baggage claim
  • Smooth wheels rolls over carpet and other floor types easily
  • No signs of dents in our drop test

Cons

  • Not expandable

WHY WE LIKE IT: One of the most popular suitcases on the market, Away's standard carry-on is definitely worth the hype. Not only is the suitcase simple and stylish from the outside, it's also full of functional features inside to make packing for your next international trip a breeze.

The bag unfolds into two separate primary compartments to fit all of your things: One fully zippered side and one with adjustable compression straps, and there are mesh pockets to stash smaller items. In terms of durability, the bag looked great after our drop and scratch tests, showing no major signs of damage or dents.

Away releases limited edition color drops and material finishes (like high gloss) throughout the year, but even its core collection is full of a variety of neutral and bold color options for you to choose from so you can quickly find yours at baggage claim.

WHAT TESTERS ARE SAYING: Consumer testers and GH analysts alike love to travel with the Away carry-on, including one who shared, "It fit all of the clothes I needed for a long weekend. It rolled really easily and was light enough to pop in and out of the overhead bin." I personally take this suitcase everywhere I go and have always been impressed by how much I can shove inside, but it isn't expandable, which can make it a little tighter for a long trip.

Testers said the telescopic handle felt flimsier than others they tried, but they were impressed with the bag overall, saying that it was easy to maneuver and roll over different types of flooring, including wood, carpet, and tile.

Pros

  • Just push a button to expand bag, then it compresses down
  • External pockets for easy access to essential items
  • Nylon material held up to abrasion tests

Cons

  • Heavier design cuts into packing weight

WHY WE LIKE IT: The innovative design details of this softside checked bag from Briggs & Riley help to simplify packing for extended trips abroad. The bag features a unique push-button expansion system unlike any other we've evaluated, which allows you to easily expand the bag, fill it with everything you'll need, and then compress it back down to its standard size. Other innovative features include a built-in trifold garment folder for formal attire and reinforced corners for added protection to keep your things from getting smooshed.

Although the suitcase weighs more than other models we've evaluated, it's made with a nylon material that resisted wear and tear when I tested it in our abrasion machine. It also earned top marks in our latest round of drop testing and received high scores for maneuverability, thanks to its smooth wheels and sturdy telescopic handle.

WHAT TESTERS SAY: One tester who was impressed with the amount of space in the carry-on version of the bag shared, "It fit clothing and accessories for two people for a seven-day summer vacation." Another tester who brought the collection's 22-inch version on a two-week trip to Japan described it as "super sleek and stylish" and said they would be using it more often.

I use this 24-inch bag for week-long trips when a regular carry-on doesn't cut it but I still don't need a huge checked suitcase. The brand also carries 26-inch, 29-inch, and 31-inch models of this checked bag if you're someone who overpacks or wants more room for an even longer trip.

Pros

  • Smoothest wheels in our tests
  • Corners reinforced with aluminum bumpers for extra protection
  • Handle locks at 20 heights for a comfortable hold

Cons

  • Testers said suitcase was prone to scuffs

WHY WE LIKE IT: Rolling a bag through the airport has never been easier than it is with July's classic luggage, including this spacious checked suitcase and its popular carry-on bags.

Made with a polycarbonate shell, the suitcase is lightweight and durable, and the corners are reinforced with aluminum bumpers for an added level of protection. The bag held up well after being released repeatedly from our drop tester, but testers noted marks and scuffs on the surface after taking the bag on just one trip.

It boasts 80 liters of packing space and features one fully zippered compartment and one open compartment with a compression panel and Y-strap for security. The telescopic handle technically locks at 20 different heights to prevent it from falling down on its own, and most testers appreciated the slanted grip on the handle, sharing that it was comfortable to hold and easy to maneuver.

WHAT TESTERS SAY: One GH analyst who took the checked bag on a vacation abroad said, "I've never used a suitcase with wheels this smooth." I've personally traveled with luggage from the brand and was blown away by how effortless it was to roll the suitcases, even over carpet and concrete sidewalks.

Pros

  • Tapered design prevents tipping
  • Durable material withstood abrasion and drop tests
  • Lots of internal pockets and compartments for organization

Cons

  • More traditional look wasn't loved by all testers

WHY WE LIKE IT: Travelpro luggage was created by a pilot who wanted to make bags specifically for other pilots and airline crewmembers who were always on the go. The result is a collection of highly durable, quality suitcases including the popular Platinum Elite medium checked suitcase.

Built to last, the luggage is made of heavyweight nylon material that performed well when I tested it for abrasion resistance. When I released the bag repeatedly from our drop tester, it showed no signs of damage or dents. To prevent the suitcase from tipping over when it's full, it's designed with a unique tapered expansion system, so the bag is narrower at the top and broader at the bottom.

Full of thoughtful and functional features, the suitcase makes packing and traveling a breeze. The bag can be unzipped to reveal one large packing compartment with compression panels that secure your belongings in place, a removable wet bag for toiletries, a large mesh zippered pocket in the lid for breathable storage, and a built-in suiter to help keep more formal clothes in tip-top shape.

WHAT TESTERS SAY: Our testers also gave the suitcase high scores for ease of use and appreciated the sturdy feel of the telescopic handle. The suitcase does have a more traditional look, though, which some testers described as "old-fashioned," sharing that they wished it were sleeker.

delsey paris helium dlx softside expandable luggage
Navy blue suitcase with a retractable handle and wheels.

Pros

  • Lightweight for softside luggage
  • Testers said the telescopic handle was comfortable to hold
  • External pockets for easy access

Cons

  • Not as sturdy as other bags we've tested

WHY WE LIKE IT: While some softside luggage is bulky and pricey, the Helium DLX carry-on from Delsey is lightweight (as the name implies), and comes at a surprisingly affordable price. The polyester material isn't quite as durable or substantial as nylon styles we've tested, but the brand's polyester fabric has performed well overall in our abrasion tests without major wear.

Two external zippered pockets allow for easy access to travel essentials like your phone and ID, so you won't have to hold up the TSA line while scouring through your bag. While the bag unzips to expose only one main compartment for packing, it's equipped with a removable bi-fold organizer and expands by 2 inches for additional room. Plus, the inner lining can be fully unzipped and removed for easy cleaning.

WHAT TESTERS SAY: I personally have carried luggage from Delsey for international trips and love the smooth wheels and sturdy telescopic handle. Our testers who tried Delsey's luggage found the handle to be comfortable to grip and use. However, they said the bags were more difficult to maneuver through our obstacle course than others they tested.

a duffel from llbean standing and open showing the interior

Pros

  • Easy to compress for storage
  • Flexible material can be stuffed full of items
  • Water-resistant fabric

Cons

  • Only two wheels can be trickier to maneuver

WHY WE LIKE IT: A rolling duffel like this one from L.L.Bean is ideal for longer adventures abroad or for overpackers like me. The duffel isn't as structured as standard suitcases, meaning you can compress it and slide it under your bed or in a closet if you're pressed for storage space—and on the other hand, you can really fill it to the brim when you're packing. Just be careful that you're not stuffing it too much because it can be easy to exceed an airline's weight restrictions.

The bag has a wide opening for easy access to everything you need inside, and outer compression straps keep everything in place. Made of durable polyester material with a reinforced base, the duffel lasts for years and years without signs of wear, according to one analyst.

Plus, it's water-resistant inside and out—perfect for inevitable leaks or wet weather. If you're looking for something smaller, the brand carries a variety of sizes to meet your travel needs.

WHAT TESTERS SAY: One GH analyst who loves to travel with the XX-Large version of this duffel said that it's one of her go-to picks for family vacations. With just two wheels, our analyst said it's a little more cumbersome to maneuver than a spinner suitcase, but you also have the option to carry the bag with the padded strap.

How we test luggage

double line break

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, we test all types of luggage using our specialized equipment, and we share bags with consumer testers who are able to take the luggage on their own trips to provide us with real-user feedback. When we tested more than 100 pieces of luggage, here are the characteristics we considered:

testing zippers on hardside luggage
Good Housekeeping/Lexie Sachs

✔️ Size and ease of use: This factor is especially important for international travel. We measure and weigh each piece of luggage to ensure that it meets the standard restrictions put in place by airlines and because the claimed weight and dimensions may not always match the true size. Along with measuring the luggage, we score how easy it is to open and close zippers and access interior compartments.

✔️ Packability: We fill each bag with a standard packing load dependent on its size, including clothing, accessories, and toiletries and rate them based on their packing capacity.

Good Housekeeping / Emma Seymour

✔️ Durability: When we evaluate softside luggage, we cut a strip of material from the bag and place it in our abrasion tester, which rubs the fabric back and forth 15,000 times to simulate extended use.

For hardside suitcases, we conduct a scratch test and scrape a metal tool repeatedly over the hard shell, noting any scratches or marks that result.

We also complete water-resistance tests on zippers, pouring water onto the zipper closures and then measuring how much water seeps through to the inside.

We place each bag in our drop tester and repeatedly release the bags at different angles from a set 3-foot height. We visually assess the bags for any dents, damages, and breakage.

✔️ Consumer testing: Once the bags are filled with a standard weight, consumer testers maneuver the luggage through our obstacle course. They pull the bags around twists and turns and roll them over different surfaces including carpeting, tile and wood.

Testers rate properties like overall ease of use, the sturdiness of the telescopic and carrying handles, appearance, and more. Along with our luggage obstacle course, consumer testers take the suitcases on their own travels and provide us with real-user feedback about their experiences.

What to look for when shopping for the best luggage for international travel

double line break

Aside from material and size, here are a few other things to consider when you're in the market for new luggage:

✔️ Wheels: Suitcases with four 360-degree spinner wheels earn the top scores in our maneuverability tests, meaning they can be held upright or tilted backward and can be pushed and pulled in any direction for smooth traveling. Suitcases with two wheels roll just when you tilt them, and they can only be moved forward and backward.

✔️ Telescopic handle: If you're shopping in person, it's a good idea to raise and lower the telescopic handle, adjusting it to different heights to determine if it locks into place at a comfortable position and if the grip feels comfortable to you. Always use care when opening the handle because jerking it around could potentially cause damage.

✔️ Carrying handles: Most suitcases, backpacks, and duffels feature carrying handles on the sides of the bag, which are helpful when raising and lowering the bags, like when accessing an overhead bin on a plane. Be sure that the handles feel sturdy and comfortable to grip.

✔️ Compartments: Decide if you want your suitcase to have one primary packing compartment to fill with all of your belongings or if you'd prefer separate, smaller compartments for more organization. Also consider the number of pockets on the suitcase, including internal pockets and external pockets that can be easily accessed while you're on the go.

✔️ Zippers: A sturdy, quality zipper can make a world of difference when you're traveling, although you may not think of it while you're shopping for a new suitcase. We recommend opening and closing the zipper several times to determine if the zipper is smooth and easy to use. It's also a good idea to drop some water on the zipper track to determine if it's water-resistant: If the zipper is water-resistant, it should prevent the moisture from seeping through to inside the bag.

✔️ Charging capabilities: There are some bags equipped with a built-in USB port (battery not included) so that you can charge your phone and other electronics while you travel. If you opt to use the charger, be sure your battery meets any restrictions set in place by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Transportation Security Administration.

✔️ Warranties and returns: Many brands only offer warranties that cover manufacturing defects, which can ultimately be difficult to prove. Instead of focusing on the warranty, we recommend checking to see if the brand or retailer offers a generous return policy with any-reason returns or free trials, especially if you're shopping online.

What size luggage do I need for international travel?

double line break

Each international airline has its own size and weight restrictions, so it's always best to review your specific airline's requirements before choosing your bag for your trip abroad.

In the United States, most airlines allow carry-on bags to weigh up to around 35 pounds, but many international carriers have lower weight limits. They're typically around 22 pounds, but there are even some that cap at 16 pounds.

The same is true of dimensions: International airlines tend to set a maximum of 22 inches for carry-ons. When it comes to checked luggage, the standard size for international flights is 27 inches and around 50 pounds, but there are airlines that allow for larger checked bags.

What is the best suitcase material for international travel?

double line break

There are advantages and disadvantages to both hardside and softside luggage, and which one works best for you ultimately comes down to personal preference:

✔️ Hardside luggage: Suitcases with a hard shell tend to be durable and lightweight and have a simple, streamlined look that's in style right now. These are the most common hardside materials:

  • Polycarbonate: This is by far the most popular option. It's durable when it's dropped, thanks to its high impact resistance, but it's not quite as resistant to scratches and scuffs, so you still may notice some signs of wear.
  • ABS plastic: A more affordable material, ABS plastic is lightweight but not quite as durable and even more prone to scratching than polycarbonate.
  • Polycarbonate and ABS composite: Some brands use a combination of the two to reap the benefits of both materials, most commonly an ABS shell with a polycarbonate coating. The composite still isn't as durable as 100% polycarbonate, though.

✔️ Softside luggage: Soft suitcases with fabric outers are a more traditional option, and the material is flexible, which is helpful when it's time to store your bag. They're also less likely to show major signs of wear than hardside suitcases.

  • Nylon: The most common material for softside luggage, nylon is a synthetic fiber that's durable and able to withstand abrasion, making it a great option for frequent flyers or those who are rougher on their bags.
  • Polyester: Also a synthetic fiber, polyester makes for a lighter weight but less durable material that's ultimately more affordable than nylon. Still, we've tested many polyester suitcases that have performed well in our tests for abrasion resistance.
