If you’ve ever tried waxing—either at-home or at a salon or spa—you already know the deal: it hurts but it works. One of the biggest perks of waxing is how long it can last, which can range from two to four weeks. The downside: the pain (depending on your tolerance) and the cost. If you are getting it done professionally, going one to two times a month adds up! This is where we come in: The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab set out to find the best at-home waxing kits for easy (and inexpensive) hair removal.

Our top picks:

Our beauty chemists evaluated a range of waxing products, including hot waxes, cold waxes, strips, and hard wax. Each of these waxes has different pros and cons which we’ll get into below. For our most recent test, we enlisted five consumer testers to try six different wax kits over a one month period. The testers used their assigned product at least once, monitored their results, and shared their reviews. The results speak for themselves. Our GH experts analyzed the data to find the winning waxing kits that actually perform on underarms, bikini, face, and more.

Before you get waxing, make sure you know how to prepare with at-home hair removal tips and must-knows (for example, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises that hair should be about about one-fourth to three-fourths of an inch long for best results, and experts advise against trying to pull off a DIY Brazilian).

Check out the Beauty Lab’s top-tested waxing kits, plus top picks from our beauty editors.

Wax Strips for Face & Bikini

Pros

  • Pre-waxed strips; no heat required
  • Easy, mess-free application
  • Beauty Director favorite

Cons

  • You may need to warm strips in your hands before using

These innovative strips from Sally Hansen are ready to use right out of the box. You don’t have to warm them for the wax to work—simply separate the strips, smooth on, and pull off! GH Senior Beauty & Style Director April Franzino says they’ll save time and cause less of a mess than some other kits. Plus they are super budget-friendly; this was also our best value pick.

One note: depending on the temperature of the room you're waxing in (or where you store the product), you may need to rub the strips between your hands to warm the wax a bit.

What testers say: Testers found them simple to use and not messy. The wax removed short, fine, and thick hair well, and skin remained hair-free for more than two weeks. “This product delivered fast, great results,” one said.

Nair Lux Wax

Pros

  • Removes short and long hair
  • Wax is easy to take off in one swipe
  • Leaves skin soft and smooth

Cons

  • Learning curve when using for the first time

A GH Beauty Award winner, this microwaveable hot wax removes unwanted face and body hair quickly with no messy strips. The wax was simple to take off in one swipe and removed both short and long body hair well, “leaving skin soft and smooth,” GH Beauty Lab Director Sabina Wizemann says. She noted that redness was minimal and went away very quickly. She did find there to be a learning curve at first use but got the hang of it quickly.

What testers say: “As soon as I opened the box, I absolutely loved the fragrance,” one said. “I really appreciate how quick and easy it is to prepare the wax—it’s ready within minutes and requires very little effort. Pros

  • Heat-free
  • Water-soluble formula makes for easy cleanup
  • Great for larger areas

Cons

  • Can take a few tries to remove all hair

This pick from Nad’s is a clear, no-heat formula that's also super-easy to clean up post-wax, perfect for tackling larger areas on the legs and arms. Since it’s water-soluble, you can wash off leftover pieces from your skin, and even clothing and towels if you get any accidental drips on them—which is helpful since testers did warn application could get a little messy.

What testers say: They said it was effective at removing hair and didn’t hurt too much, but that it took them a few tries to remove all hair.

Editor’s Choice
Brazilian & Bikini Wax Kit

Pros

  • Foolproof hard wax; no strips needed
  • Removes even coarse, short hairs
  • Red color makes for easy application

Cons

  • Can take a while to warm up

Hard wax eliminates the need for cloth strips: Simply apply the wax, wait for it to harden, and pull swiftly to remove hair. This one comes neatly packaged in a microwavable bowl along with application spatulas and post-wax calming wipes, so you're ready to wax right away. The bright red hue makes application and removal easy. Once applied, the wax can take a bit to harden, so make sure it is fully set but still slightly pliable before yanking.

What experts say: One of our editors swear this wax is less messy and leaves behind less residue than soft wax or strips, and the formula works better than any other she's tried for removing even stubborn, coarse underarm stubble.

How we test at-home waxing kits

linebreak

The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab regularly tests various hair removal products, including waxes. In our most recent study, we tested six waxes and assigned each product to about five at-home testers over a one-month period. The Lab collected 439 data points from this study and reviewed more than 58 tester comments on their experiences with each product. Our picks include top performers from that test and older Beauty Lab tests, along with editor picks based on personal hands-on experience.

What to look for when shopping for the best at-home waxing kits

linebreak

A few things to consider when choosing the right wax kit:

✔️ Your hair type and desired treatment area. “Think about how thick your hair is in the location that you want to treat,” says Wizemann.

✔️ Wax type. Decide if you prefer hard or soft wax, which usually take more time and skill, or wax strips, which are easier to use and clean up. “Also, check if the wax needs to be heated in a microwave or on the stove, or if it comes with its own heating device,” adds Wizemann.

✔️ Ingredients (both in wax kits and aftercare). “Ingredients like azulene, chamomile, or tea tree can calm skin post-wax,” says Jessie Cheung, M.D., board-certified dermatologist in Chicago and New York City. “Avoid kits with added fragrance or dye if you're prone to irritation.”

Note: if you have sensitive skin, “look for formulas designed for sensitive skin that contain soothing ingredients such as aloe vera or calendula,” adds Wizemann.

What are the types of waxes and where should you use them?

linebreak

The different types of waxes can be confusing. Wizemann and Dr. Cheung break it down:

  • Hard wax works well for removing coarse, thick hair from sensitive spots like the face, bikini line, and underarms. “Since it hardens on the skin and does not need strips, it is often easier to use on small or delicate areas,” says Wizemann.
  • Cold wax strips come pre-coated and don't require heating, “making them convenient for travel or quick touch-ups, but they're generally less effective on coarse or shorter hair,” says Dr. Cheung.
  • Soft wax “spreads easily over the skin and is better for larger areas like the legs or arms,” says Wizemann. “It is a more efficient choice for removing fine hair from wide surfaces.”
  • Sugar wax is another, newer option. “It's a water-soluble paste made from sugar, lemon, and water that tends to be gentler on the skin and is easier to clean up, although it can have a steeper learning curve,” says Dr. Cheung.

What is the best way to use at-home wax kits?

linebreak

For the best results, “hair should generally be about 1/4 inch long so the wax can grip it effectively, though some formulas are designed to work on slightly shorter hair so always check the product instructions,” says Wizemann.

Dr. Cheung advises to always test the wax temperature on your wrist first. “Apply in the direction of hair growth, remove against it, and pull the strip back flat and fast, parallel to the skin, not upward,” she says. You should not wax over sunburned, irritated, infected, or recently lasered skin. Afterwards, “avoid direct sun exposure, tanning, scrubs, retinoids, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and other exfoliating acids for at least 48 hours,” advises Dr. Cheung.

What kind of hair removal wax is best for beginners at home?

linebreak

“Hard wax is the most forgiving because you can reapply, and it gives you a little more working time than soft wax,” says Dr. Cheung. “Since it adheres more to the hair than the skin, it's less painful and causes less irritation.”

Wizemann notes that wax strips can also sometimes be a good options for beginners because they come ready to use. “They’re a good way to experiment and see how your hair (and skin) behave after. Although they don’t always remove hair as completely as hard or soft waxes, she adds.
