As a busy dietitian mom of two, I rely on shelf-stable snacks more than ever. I often pack snacks well in advance, toss them into my kids’ bags, and hope they’ll still be in good shape when they finally get around to eating them the next day. I also want snacks that strike a balance: options I feel good about serving, that offer real nutritional value, and—perhaps most importantly—that my kids will actually eat.

My top picks:

I keep a variety of nonperishable snacks on hand for lunchboxes, after-school activities, sports practices, road trips, and those inevitable moments when everyone suddenly announces they’re starving. Over time, I’ve found a few that have become permanent fixtures in our pantry. These are the products I buy on repeat, along with why each one has earned a spot in our snack rotation.

These mini fruit bars are one of my go-to lunchbox snacks because they're made with just fruit and require zero prep. My kids especially love the mango apple flavor, and the small size makes them easy for little hands to manage.

I like them when fresh fruit isn't practical—think school bags, road trips, or after-school activities. They give kids a convenient way to get fruit flavor without worrying about bruising, leaks, or spoilage.

Simple Mills is a staple in our pantry because the brand does a great job of giving a more nutritious spin to familiar kid favorites. These cheddar popped crackers are crunchy and flavorful, and they come in individual snack packs, so they're easy to grab for school or an activity.

One reason I reach for this product is that it's nut-free, which matters when I'm packing snacks for school. Many Simple Mills products contain nuts, so I save those for home or after-school snacking. But these crackers use butternut squash as the base, a fun way to sneak a little vegetable into a tasty, crunchy snack.

These little soft bars from Once Upon a Farm are shaped like wheels, which makes them instantly more fun for younger kids. They're a great size for toddlers, and my 5-year-old enjoys them, too.

From a nutrition perspective, these bites are pretty impressive. They offer 3 grams of fiber and 4 grams of protein, and are made with real fruits and vegetables and sweetened with dates. For a snack that's easy for little hands to manage, they pack a great nutritional punch.

Little Spoon is probably best known for baby food, but its snack line has some genuinely fun options for older kids too. These fruit rippers are soft strips of fruit leather that kids can pull apart and eat piece by piece, and my kids can’t get enough of them.

They're made with real fruit and contain no artificial flavors or dyes. Each ripper has only 2 grams of added sugar, and the individually wrapped portions make them especially convenient for lunchboxes and car rides. And they’re so tasty and fun that my kids think they’re a treat.

My kids love chocolate milk, but I don't always love the amount of added sugar that can come with it. That's why this new no-added-sugar option from Horizon caught my eye right away. It's sweetened with a little monk fruit, but the sweetness is subtle enough that my kids don't seem to notice a difference. It's also lactose-free, which can help some kids.

And yes, it's shelf-stable, though I think chocolate milk generally tastes best chilled. I like keeping a few on hand for situations where refrigeration isn't immediately available, like after-school sports.

Hippeas puffs are another favorite in our house, and I appreciate that they're a little more substantial than your average cheese puff. Made from chickpeas, they provide plant-based protein and 2 grams of fiber per serving.

They're also certified gluten-free and vegan, since the cheddar seasoning is dairy-free, making them another useful option for families navigating dietary restrictions.

Solely’s fruit gummies are quite simply a dietitian’s dream. My kids devour them, and I don’t have to negotiate whether they’ll eat them. They’re made from whole fruit, with no added sugar or artificial ingredients, and they’re organic. The little individual bags are perfect for lunchboxes, and the several flavors keep things interesting.

Fruit snacks and gummies can vary widely in nutrition, so I like that these offer a simple ingredient list while still giving kids the chewy, candy-like experience they often want.

Applesauce pouches are one of those easy kids' snacks I always keep on hand. They're portable, shelf-stable, and need no prep, which checks a lot of boxes for busy families like ours.

These GoGo SqueeZ pouches have no added sugar, and some varieties include other fruits like strawberries or bananas. I especially like these for sports practices or other active afternoons when my kids need something quick and easy before or after they get moving.

Granola bars are a lunchbox classic, but they're not all created equal. I like Junkless as a better-for-you option when my kids want something chewy and sweet, especially since it has no artificial colors or flavors.

Most importantly, they have only about 5 to 7 grams of added sugar, depending on the flavor. They're also easy to eat without making much of a mess, which may sound small until you're packing snacks for a car ride or sending one along to another activity.

"Veggie straws" are often incredibly misleading because many are primarily a crunchy snack rather than a meaningful source of vegetables. I like that these take a different approach, using yellow peas along with ingredients like sweet potato and avocado oil.

That means you get some protein and fiber along with great crunch. They're also free from the top nine major food allergens, which makes them great to throw into a lunchbox or snack bag for school.

These chips are for kids who want something sweet and crunchy. The cassava flour base gives them a satisfying crispness, while cinnamon, coconut sugar, and agave provide that churro-inspired flavor.

For me, these are a fun option in the rotation, especially when my kids want something that feels like a treat. And one serving only has 5 grams of added sugar.

These are essentially Simple Mills’s take on honey-cinnamon graham crackers, with a satisfying, lightly sweet flavor. They're made with ingredients including nuts, seeds, honey, and cinnamon, and the individual snack packs make them easy to portion and toss into a bag.

Because they contain cashews, though, we treat these as an after-school or at-home snack rather than something I send to school. The kids also like it when I crush these crackers and sprinkle them over their morning yogurt.

These chips started as my snack, then my kids started reaching over and taking handfuls whenever I sat down with a bag. They're just baked apple chips, with one variety featuring just apples and another adding cinnamon.

They're not only delicious, but also incredibly simple and allergen-friendly, so I can pack them in their lunchboxes without worrying about them opening at school or spoiling in their bag.

These are a more nutritious take on the classic cheese puff. Made with real cheddar cheese and avocado oil, they have a light, crunchy bite that my kids can’t get enough of.

I also appreciate that they’re USDA organic and come in a larger bag as well as smaller bags to throw into a backpack. They’re also certified gluten-free and don’t contain any nuts or tree nuts.

Fruit roll-ups are practically a childhood rite of passage, but these offer a simpler take. BEAR Fruit Rolls are made with apples, pears, and strawberries, with black carrot juice used for color.

They're individually packaged, fun to unroll, and easy to tuck into a lunchbox. My kids enjoy the novelty, and I like that the fruit does the heavy lifting instead of a long list of artificial colors and flavors.

This is one of the more substantial options on my list. It's a convenient mac ’n’ cheese cup from Goodles that provides 11 grams of protein and 6 grams of fiber, making it much more filling than a typical snack.

In our house, I think of this as something between a snack and a quick meal. Add veggie sticks and a dip on the side, and you have an easy lunch or light dinner. It's also incredibly simple to prepare, which can be a lifesaver on busy afternoons.

Fig bars are another classic lunchbox snack, and I like these because they're soft and tender without being overly sweet. They're made with ancient grains and contain 50% less sugar than leading brands.

They're also organic and easy to eat on the go. The texture makes them a good option for younger kids, and the raspberry flavor is bright and refreshing.

These fruit bites from Amara are designed for younger toddlers, but my older kid still enjoys them. The ingredient list is simple: organic apples, coconut milk, strawberry, purple carrot for color, and lemon juice.

There is no added sugar, artificial colors, or dyes, and the resealable bag makes it easy to portion what you need and save the rest. I especially like these for families with little ones who are transitioning from baby foods to more independent snacking.

Another toddler-friendly option that doesn’t have to stop at toddlerhood. These puffs from Little Spoon are made with yellow cornmeal, sprouted white quinoa flour, sorghum flour, and pumpkin powder, plus avocado oil and a white cheddar seasoning made with real milk and cheddar cheese.

The star and half-moon shapes are adorable for kids, and the texture gives that perfect crunch. Plus, they’re organic and have no added sugar.

MadeGood makes several lunchbox-friendly snacks, and I particularly like the portion size of these little granola bites. They come in individual snack bags, making it easy to grab one when you want a small snack instead of a full bar.

They provide 2 grams of fiber and are certified gluten-free. The chocolate chips also give kids that little bit of sweetness that can make a more wholesome snack feel like a treat.
