For most of my life, I only used traditional window treatments—aluminum venetian blinds in my childhood bedroom, cheap roller shades in various rental apartments, and slightly nicer corded shades my wife and I installed in our first home.

It wasn’t until our last major remodel—a gut renovation of the Brooklyn brownstone where my family now lives—that I considered smart window treatments. This newer category of motorized shades and blinds can be controlled by a wall switch, remote, or companion app, which also lets you schedule them to open and close at specific times.

Our top picks:

I installed a smart shade on the glass wall at the back of the house, and it’s become one of my favorite features. It provides privacy at night and softens harsh midday sun while still letting in natural light. I also appreciate the hands-free, cordless design, which looks cleaner and felt safer when my kids were younger and accidental choking was a real concern. Though not cheap, it’s helped lower energy costs by automatically dropping during intense summer sun to keep the house cooler.

Over the last five years, our team in the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Improvement & Outdoor Lab has ramped up testing of smart shades. For this report, we pulled together our current top picks, based on design, performance, ease of use, and overall value.

    Serena Smart Roller Shades

    Pros

    • Wide range of design options
    • Works with all major voice assistants
    • Robust, easy-to-use app

    Cons

    • Expensive
    • Pricing not available until customization is complete

WHY WE LOVE IT: Lutron has been a leader in lighting controls for nearly 70 years, and for the last 15 years, it’s been a player in the window coverings category. too. It’s no wonder then that our experts’ best overall smart shade is from Lutron, specifically the Serena Smart Roller Shade, which comes in a wide range of design options and can be controlled and integrated into the home in various ways.

DESIGN: The Serena shades are available in hundreds of curated fabrics, including sheer, translucent, and blackout, enabling them to suit any room in the house. "I’m so impressed with the quality of the material and the range of styles," says Monique Valeris, Good Housekeeping’s home design director. If fabric shades aren't your thing, Lutron also offers smart blinds made from real wood.

Lutron also provides in-home consultations and fabric samples. Just note that their products are on the pricier side, and you won't know the total cost until you've made all your choices, which makes it harder to stick to a tight budget.

FEATURES: In addition to the design versatility, there are various ways to operate the shades, including with the remote, via the easy-to-use app, or by voice command using Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri. Keep in mind that if you want the shades to be Wi-Fi-connected, you’ll need to purchase a Lutron Caséta Smart Hub ($90), which connects the shades to your home Wi-Fi.

TESTING NOTES: Through hundreds of hours of testing in the Lab and in the homes of consumer testers, the Serena system earned top marks for performance and ease of use. “I love everything about these shades,” said one consumer tester. “They look terrific, and they were so easy to order and install."

WHY WE LOVE IT: Outfitting an entire home with smart shades could turn into a five-figure investment. Our pros like SmartWings as a budget-friendly option that doesn’t come with major compromises in style or performance.

DESIGN: Choose from six interior window covering categories, including roller, cellular, and Roman, plus hundreds of color choices. Many of the configurations sell for under $200 per shade. Though the design variety is slightly less than that of premium shade brands, like Lutron and Hunter Douglas, our design experts found the overall quality to be on par.

FEATURES: SmartWings' Wi-Fi connectivity differs from much of the competition in that it runs on a relatively new smart home platform called Matter-over-Thread. It’s better than Wi-Fi at enabling smart home devices to communicate with each other. However, it requires a Matter-compatible smart home hub, such as Apple HomePod, Google Home, or Amazon Echo.

TESTING NOTES: “The ordering process was smooth and seamless, and the shades were easy to install,” reported our consumer tester. He also noted the shades are relatively quiet and easy to program.

    Smart Shades
    Credit: GE

    Pros

    • Competitive price
    • Simple installation
    • Quiet operation

    Cons

    • Limited design choices

WHY WE LOVE IT: The brand best known for lightbulbs entered the smart home space about a decade ago and was then bought by Savant Systems, a leader in home automation, in 2020. GE’s smart lighting products (primarily sold under the Cync brand) have performed well in our tests and are very easy to install. That’s what we found as well with GE's inaugural line of smart shades.

DESIGN: As you might expect from a DIY-friendly line, selection is limited to stock widths ranging from 24 to 38 inches, with a maximum height of 76 inches. The fabric options are blackout or translucent, and the hardware is available in black or white. That reduced variety relative to premium shade brands is the main tradeoff of GE's budget-friendly option.

FEATURES: Like SmartWings, the GE shades require a Matter-compatible smart home hub, or they can be operated by remote control. The rechargeable battery lasts about six months before needing a charge, according to the brand.

TESTING NOTES: Following extensive Lab tests, our experts said the GE shades were extremely easy to install. "Simply anchor the mounting plate to the wall with a few screws, snap in the shade, and you're ready to go," noted one tester, adding that the sound from the motor was almost undetectable.

    Duette Cellular Shades
    Credit: Hunter Douglas

    Pros

    • Fully custom experience
    • Shades are sized to the exact window dimensions
    • Pleated shades deliver energy savings

    Cons

    • Premium pricing
    • Longer lead times on custom orders

WHY WE LOVE IT: Not interested in measuring and installing smart shades on your own? Hunter Douglas delivers a full custom experience, starting with an in-home consultation during which a brand rep will walk you through the options and take all the necessary measurements. Four weeks later, the rep will return to install your shades and walk you through operation.

DESIGN: Hunter Douglas offers a full array of window coverings, including shades in various fabrics and blinds made of wood, metal, and lightweight fabric. While not every single model can be motorized, our experts found plenty of options in the automated category. As part of our in-home evaluation, we installed the Duette Cellular Shades, which were the industry’s first cellular honeycomb shade, a window treatment made of pleated fabric that provides exceptional insulating quality, while also allowing natural light to filter into the room.

FEATURES: While Hunter Douglas offers hardwired installation, which makes more sense in new construction or a gut renovation. For most retrofits, battery-powered is the way to go, especially since the rechargeable battery lasts up to a year on a single charge. There’s even a version with a solar charger, which eliminates the need to manually recharge the battery.

TESTING NOTES: While the shades met the highest performance and operations standard in our evaluation, what really sets them apart is the customized experience behind the brand. “This is a fully custom service, so while you’re paying a premium, the shades are an exact fit for each opening, and the professional installation and setup are flawless,” said our tester. Another nice feature noted during testing is the top-down/bottom-up operation, which maximizes privacy and the flow of natural light into the room.

    Between-the-Glass Blinds & Shades

    Pros

    • Shades and blinds never need to be cleaned
    • The pleated fabric provides insulation, making the windows even more energy efficient
    • Cordless design adds safety

    Cons

    • The shades must be opened and closed by hand

WHY WE LOVE IT: This integrated shade system from Pella isn't automated, but it's such a smart solution that we had to include it in this roundup, even if they need to be opened and closed by hand.

Available on Pella's Lifestyle Series Casement Windows, the system consists of honeycomb shades sandwiched between panes of glass, which are protected from dust, pets, small children, and the like (translation: they never need to be cleaned!).

DESIGN: The honeycomb shades come in six colors, including three room-darkening options for use in bedrooms. You can also choose integrated blinds in six colors.

FEATURES: The shades feature pleated fabric that traps air in each cell, helping save on energy costs, especially in colder climates. The shades are also available with room-darkening fabric, ideal for bedrooms or home theaters.

TESTING NOTES: In Lab tests, the integrated shades were easy to operate, and our safety experts liked that they eliminate dangling pull cords, which pose a choking hazard to small children. Our engineers also evaluated the casement windows and the shades included with them. They found they meet high industry standards for water and wind resistance, with features such as Low-E coatings and argon-filled insulated glass that enhance energy efficiency.

    Aura Illuminated Shades
    Credit: Hunter Douglas

    Pros

    • Built-in LEDs mimic natural light
    • Intuitive smartphone app
    • Fully custom experience

    Cons

    • Expensive
    • Shades must be hardwired, making for a more complicated and costly installation

WHY WE LOVE IT: Hunter Douglas’s Aura Illuminated Shades are built on the concept of “circadian lighting,” whereby artificial lighting is used to mimic natural sunlight, for example, gradually becoming brighter in the early morning hours if you're someone who gets up before the sun rises. Though the shades are priced at a premium, this so-called human-centric lighting can promote sleep, productivity, and overall wellness.

DESIGN: The innovative three-in-one system features a traditional room-facing shade, a room-darkening liner, and programmable LED strip lights that provide varying degrees of ambient illumination throughout the day and night. You can choose from three styles for the front panel: Vignette Modern Roman Shades, Designer Roller Shades, or Sonnette Cellular Roller Shades.

FEATURES: The shades are powered through Hunter Douglas’s home automation system, which must be hardwired into your home (making the installation best suited to major renovations or new construction). The app then provides full control over the shades, allowing you to adjust light levels and the speed at which the lights fade in and out, say, to mimic the setting sun over 30 minutes.

TESTING NOTES: The same fully custom experience Hunter Douglas is known for was reflected in our evaluation of the Aura Illuminated Shades. “The company has a strong network of professional installers, which added to the overall positive experience,” said our expert tester, a contractor based in Boston. He also praised the smartphone app’s intuitive interface for setting light levels and shade positions.

How we test smart shades and smart blinds

    linebreak

Experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Improvement & Outdoor Lab evaluate a wide range of smart home technology, including smart locks, plugs, and security cameras. For this guide, our experts researched the smart shades category to identify more than a dozen widely available models from brands you’re most likely to find online and in stores.

Hands-on testing took place in the Lab and in the homes of consumer testers. We considered how easy the shades are to install, operate, and maintain. Our experts also assessed smart home integration and the intuitiveness of any companion apps. Our design experts, led by Monique Valeris, Good Housekeeping's home design director, weighed in on aesthetics, including color options and fabric quality.

What to look for when shopping for smart blinds or smart shades

    "

✔️ Compatibility: Different smart blinds or smart shade systems are compatible with particular smart home systems, so make sure to pair them with what you already have, whether it be Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple HomeKit. If you don't have a smart home system yet, select the overall system you'd like to have installed first, then choose smart window treatments that are compatible.

✔️ Window size: Blinds and shades—smart or otherwise—have to be fitted to your window, so take careful measurements before shopping. Some smart blinds and shades are available in custom sizes so they'll fit perfectly with your window, but most of the less expensive options come in stock sizes.

✔️ Power source: Smart blinds are usually either battery-operated, hardwired, or solar-powered. If you're looking at a battery-operated option, check the advertised battery life of a full charge. Some systems last three to six months, while others last only 30 days. Some systems come with a rechargeable battery pack, while others require replacements.

✔️ Ease of use: When choosing a system, it's important to think about how you want your smart blinds or shades to work for you. Do you want them set to a schedule to open and close at certain times? Do you want to control them using a remote? If you already have blinds or curtains you don't want to replace, you can install an automation kit like SwitchBot or SmarterHome, depending on your existing setup.
