How we choose the best electric fireplaces
When choosing the best electric fireplaces, the test engineers and product analysts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Tech Lab canvass the market to identify the newest and top-rated electric fireplaces. We consider each pick’s ease of installation and use, design, number of settings, and safety.
We also lean on our GH Institute Home Improvement & Outdoor Lab’s extensive testing data, familiarity with top-performing brands, and consumer reviews to gain insight on how they function in homes.
What to look for when shopping for the best electric fireplace
✔️ Type: Electric fireplaces come in a variety of models and all have different use applications depending on the location, room size, and the style of your home.
- Freestanding electric fireplaces are very similar to space heaters in how they function: They are lightweight, portable, and can be moved from room to room. But the flame effect adds an element of coziness that is lacking in a standard space heater.
- Fireplace inserts are designed to fit inside an existing fireplace, which will add to the realism and also make use of the empty void. Inserts are available in a variety of sizes, so make sure you take accurate internal measurements of your fireplace.
- Wall-mount or recessed electric fireplaces will give you the most modern look. They often use glass to create brilliant colors and can be the most expensive type of electric fireplace in both cost and installation.
- Mantel electric fireplaces are one of the fastest ways to transform a room. These two-in-one models include the electric fireplace as well as a mantel and surround. They attach directly to your wall and work best in a traditional setting.
- TV console fireplaces come with shelves and cabinets to store your TV and other devices to serve as the entertainment hub for your home.
✔️ Heating type: There are two ways an electric fireplace can heat your home. Keep in mind that electric fireplaces are meant to be cool to the touch, but they do produce heat to warm the room. Though most units will let you use the fireplace function without creating heat, it's best to supervise pets or children while in use.
- Convection heating: This type works like a convection oven and creates heat and then uses a fan to push that heat into the air to warm you up. A convection heater can be noisier, though it may be cooler to the touch than an infrared heater.
- Infrared heating: In most cases, an infrared heater typically warms up a room faster, as the air around you doesn't need to be heated. It's similar to the sun beating down on you or a campfire heating up cold hands — in those scenarios, infrared radiation is being emitted to directly warm up your skin as opposed to the circulating air. An infrared heater can be quieter than a convection heater, but it may be hotter to the touch.
