Whether you always seem to be hosting a barbecue or you're just looking for a comfy spot to chill on a sunny afternoon, there's a great outdoor sofa that can transform your patio, deck, or balcony into a go-to spot for relaxation. From compact designs for small spaces to spacious sectionals made for entertaining, our experts have curated a list of picks that deliver comfort, style, and durability.

The Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab experts teamed up with GH home editors to find the best outdoor sofas for your home. The Textiles Lab is comprised of fiber scientists who helped research and review products from popular furniture retailers. In addition, we sent outdoor sofas from Member's Mark and Cozey to consumer testers so they could give us their feedback on how easy they were to set up in their backyards and if they found them comfortable and good looking. Our list includes options for a range of budgets and outdoor spaces, so you can find the perfect sofa for your needs.

Remember: No matter what outdoor sofa you buy, it's important to properly store your outdoor furniture when not in use so it lasts multiple seasons. Most brands will recommend owners remove any cushions and store them inside as well as place a waterproof cover over the furniture to protect against any extreme weather, especially during the colder months.

Rated as our most comfortable couch, the indoor version of the Harmony Sofa has made several of our shopping guides over the years. This model designed specifically for outdoors is just as beautiful—and soft. We appreciate the pillowy-soft cushions and deep seats, perfect for cozying up outside. According to West Elm, the cushions are fabricated to be water-, mold- and mildew-resistant. Although pricey, it's by no means the most expensive sofa on our list, and the couch comes with two side pillows and two lumbar cushions.

I personally own the indoor version of this sofa, and it's like sitting on a cloud. It's one of the most comfortable couches I've ever owned, and I can't imagine a better fit for outdoor lounging.

A top choice on Amazon, this outdoor patio set features a modular sofa (comprised of an armless sofa and two corner chairs), an ottoman, and a coffee table for ultimate customization. The set is made of a durable steel frame and hand-woven resin wicker that is designed to be water-resistant. It has all the hallmarks of a solid furniture set—plus it rings in for just a few hundred dollars. Whether you want to stick to a budget or have a uniquely shaped patio space, this modular set will do just the trick.

A Good Housekeeping 2026 Home Renovation award winner, this four-piece couch set includes a comfy sofa, two 360-degree swivel chairs, and an electronic fire pit table for cooler nights. According to our engineers, the powder-coated aluminum frame should do a good job of resisting the weather, and the acrylic fabric is designed for increased durability and resistance to fading from UV rays. “The sofa easily seats three people, and the swivel chairs are fun because they open up both sides of the patio to conversation,” said a tester who gave the set top marks for comfort, being easy to clean, and overall design.

Proving you don't need a sprawling deck to create a relaxed outdoor retreat, this Amazon Choice loveseat from Crestlive features a laid-back design with a small footprint. At about 35" x 53", the sofa can slide into a narrow balcony or an awkward corner of a porch and still comfortably fit two people. The 4-inch thick tufted cushion comes in four colors (beige, black, blue, and dark gray), the synthetic rattan is weather-resistant, and the metal frame is designed to resist rusting, according to the brand. Did we mention it's only $200?

For a sleek and modern look, this Joss & Main outdoor sofa hits all the marks. The low-profile silhouette, clean lines, and crisp neutral cushions, available in beige, brown, or dark brown, give it tons of low-key style. We appreciate the deep seats that let you comfortably lounge with space to spare if you want to accessorize with a few throw pillows. The warm teak tones should complement most patios with their natural beauty, all while offering the sturdiness you find from real wood.

Available in 12 different configurations to suit your outdoor space, the Mistral Collection from Canadian furniture brand, Cozey, is a favorite of our experts. You can fully customize the couch of your dreams with five fabric options and three frame finishes. When it comes to size, options seem endless. You can opt for everything from an ottoman and a two-seater to an L-shaped sectional or U-shaped configuration, and more.

Pottery Barn furniture almost always makes it into our couch guides because of its comfortable and durable pieces that exude traditional aesthetics. This outdoor sectional holds up to those expectations, thanks to its aluminum frame designed to resist rusting and synthetic wicker that features a protective lacquer finish. We like the sloped armrests that add a unique flair, as well as the high-performance fabric slipcovers available in 30+ colors you can add on for further customization.

"This spacious outdoor sofa is super roomy and super stylish. We recommend pairing it with the coordinating cushion covers (sold separately) for added protection from wet and sunny weather and for a more personal touch," said a GH analyst.

To create this list, the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab fiber scientists considered the indoor furniture brands we have previously tested, outdoor sofas made with quality materials and weather-resistant finishes, and a range of styles at various price points to suit different outdoor set-ups. We review each product’s claims and listed materials and partner with the experts in the Home Improvement & Outdoor Lab to assess the construction of each outdoor sofa to find the most comfortable, durable, and stylish options for every type of space. Two of the sofas were also sent to the homes of consumer testers to try out and give us their feedback.

  • Durability and weather resistance: We look for high-quality materials like powder-coated aluminum, teak, all-weather wicker, and performance fabrics that can withstand sun, rain, and humidity without fading, rusting, or deteriorating.
  • Comfort and support: We assess factors like cushion firmness, seat depth, and overall ergonomics to ensure sofas are comfortable for both lounging and upright seating.
  • Ease of care: We favor options with removable, washable cushion covers and materials that are designed to resist stains, moisture, and UV damage.
  • Assembly and usability: We look for products that are easy to set up, move, and maintain over time.

What to look for when shopping for outdoor sofas

If this is your first time purchasing an outdoor sofa—or you want a refresher on what to consider while browsing your options—Home & Apparel Reviews Analyst Amanda Constantine shares some shopping advice.

✔️ Cushion material: "The overwhelming majority of outdoor furniture cushions are made with synthetic fibers like polyester, acrylic, and olefin," says Constantine. These materials are water-resistant and thus able to withstand light showers, although heavier rainfall may result in damage. If you experience a lot of rain, look for cushions that also feature a water-resistant finish to better protect against wet weather.

Synthetic fibers in particular "also tend to hold onto color better than natural fibers, making them less likely to fade outside in the sun," adds Constantine. Generally, synthetic materials are better equipped to handle wear and tear.

✔️ Frame material: There are three main materials used to make the frame of an outdoor sofa: wood, metal, and wicker. Constantine delves into the advantages and disadvantages.

  • Wood: Although chic, wood furniture is "more susceptible to decay and can lack the weather resistance of other materials," explains Constantine. That's why she recommends choosing a hardwood like teak, which is naturally weather-resistant. You can also "opt for wood covered in a weather-resistant finish to prevent the wood from being damaged," says Constantine. Although teak furniture can withstand the weather, former Home Care & Cleaning Lab Executive Director Carolyn Forté recommends using Furniture Clinic's Teak Garden Furniture Kit, a GH Seal Star that comes with everything you need to nourish and protect teak furniture.
  • Metal: Modern-looking metal furniture is typically made from aluminum or galvanized steel. Aluminum is lighter and easier to move around your patio. While it can resist rusting, it isn't as durable as galvanized steel. However, steel can hold heat, so your sofa frame may become hot to the touch during sunny days.
  • Wicker: Traditionally, wicker is woven from natural materials like rattan or bamboo, explains Constantine. Nowadays, most wicker furniture is made from synthetic materials like vinyl or polyethylene (PE). These materials are already better suited for outdoor environments, but they can also be coated in a lacquer or resin finish for even better weather resistance, adds Constantine.
