On any given day our skin can tell a range of stories about our lives. Maybe you stayed up a bit too late last night doom scrolling and now dark circles are staring back at you in the mirror. Or maybe you skipped removing your makeup before bed and a stubborn pimple has popped up and just won’t seem to budge. The one thing that both of these scenarios have in common is that concealer can handle them. Brightening dark circles, camouflaging blemishes, masking hyperpigmentation and redness—a truly great concealer does it all.

Our top picks:

Hoping to achieve your-skin-but-better results? The Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Hydrating & Brightening Concealer is your best bet. On the other hand, for long-wearing coverage, IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer has you covered, literally. In order to arm you with the best concealers to tackle all of your skin concerns, the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty & Personal Care Lab tested more than 150 concealer products based on coverage, finish, ease of use, texture, and wear time and whittled down the field to a final 10 using data from professional makeup artists' trials, editor at-home analysis, and consumer tester feedback.

    Pros

    • Provides buildable coverage for undereyes and blemishes while also hydrating the skin
    • Consumer testers found that the formula did not cake or settle into fine lines

    Cons

    • Not everyone liked the sponge applicator

TESTERS SAY: This concealer won't cake or settle into fine lines and the easy-to-use "sponge tip is perfect for blending evenly," raved one tester. However, other consumer testers found the sponge difficult to work with. The concealer can be used for all areas of the face, but our consumer testers favored it for blemishes.

Bright Start Creamy Buildable Coverage Airbrush Concealer

    Pros

    • Hydrating creamy consistency
    • Received top scores among testers for covering blemishes

    Cons

    • Some consumer testers found it difficult to use the sponge applicator

    Shape Tape Blur Concealer Stick

    Pros

    • Appears to brighten
    • Silky texture with hydrating semi matte finish

    Cons

    • Some testers reported that the coverage wasn't long lasting

If you're in the market for a concealer that has a smooth silky texture, applies evenly onto the skin, and leaves you with a brightened semi matte finish, you'll want to add this one to your cart. Its formula features smoothing avocado, shea, and mango butters as well as hyaluronic acid to hydrate your skin.

TESTERS SAY: "What stood out to me most about this concealer is its unique texture ...It is almost like a balm and then [applies] into more of a powdery finish," one consumer tester said. "I had a lighter shade so it brightened up the area nicely and the balm like texture applied nicely to that aging area of mine," another added. Testers also agreed that the concealer did not cake or settle into fine lines, but the coverage leans more sheer to medium and is not as long-lasting compared to the full coverage of the original Tarte Shape Tape.

Light, glowy coverage is what you'll get with this Armani Beauty concealer. With a wand applicator that delivers just the right amount of product, you can easily manipulate your coverage level from sheer to medium.

EXPERT NOTE: "It's nice and creamy!" says GH Beauty Reviews Analyst Chiara Butler. "I don't like if a concealer is too powdery or filmy. This one doesn't make my undereyes look dry. It's easy to blend in. It leaves my skin looking fresh and moist."

    Pros

    • Texture won't settle into fine lines
    • Non-drying, lightweight formula

    Cons

    • Not as long-lasting

A drugstore must-have, this pick got a perfect texture score and the best marks for not settling into lines, making it ideal for mature or aging skin. It has a non-irritating formula and ranked second-best in Lab testing for having an easy-to-use applicator, being non-drying, and resisting any signs of caking.

TESTERS SAY: "This concealer really does have an 'invisible' quality like the package says," said one tester. "This lightweight concealer sinks in quickly, leaving a smooth satin finish," said another tester, although our Lab tests showed that the wear isn't long-lasting and the light coverage may not be adequate to cover darker hyperpigmentation like sun spots.

EXPERTS SAY: During use, makeup artists found that the formula is best-suited for undereye use and doesn't quite stand up to darker discoloration on age spots. One noted that it's a "magic wand" for evening your skin tone and the "touch of peachiness [does] well to cancel darkness under eyes."

    Mini Radiant Creamy Concealer

    Pros

    • Works for all areas of the face, especially blemishes
    • Long-lasting, non-cakey wear

    Cons

    • Some reviewers found it settled into fine lines

Beauty Lab tests found that it offers excellent coverage, especially for blemishes, and that the long-lasting formula won’t settle into fine lines or cake. The Mini Radiant Creamy Concealer comes at half the cost than the regular sized NARS concealer (priced at $32), which is a great option for those who want to try a bit first, need to mix shades, or their skin tone changes throughout the seasons.

TESTERS SAY: One consumer tester called it "the best one" she had ever used.

    IRL Filter Finish Concealer

    Pros

    • Top scores for easy, even application
    • Blurs and perfects undereyes

    Cons

    • Didn't cover blemishes well in testing

With perfect scores for easy, even application in our latest tests, Makeup Revolution's "creamy, softening texture" wowed testers, especially for disappearing dark circles. The uniquely-shaped applicator fits perfectly in undereyes, and the formula scored highly for having a nice texture that blended well and looked natural, not cakey or patchy. One caveat: It's not well-suited for covering blemishes.

TESTERS SAY: "It brightened up my undereyes and kept them feeling smooth," said one consumer tester. "This concealer has a really nice blurring formula, said another. "My undereyes always look smooth when I apply it."

    Pros

    • Hydrating, dewy finish
    • Natural look that melts into skin

    Cons

    • Thick texture may be off-putting to some

This concealer is perfect for those who prefer fresh-faced coverage without caking (think no-makeup makeup), especially under the eyes. Keep in mind that some reviewers didn't love the texture, calling it "thick" and "tacky" at times.

EXPERT NOTE: "I prefer a subtle, nondrying, dewy coverage," says one Beauty Lab pro, and "this one fits my needs perfectly. It is super easy to apply; I usually gently dab it on my face and wait a little bit for it to melt into my skin before I pat it over with my finger, and I'm good to go. I like that it makes me look natural and well-rested."

This is a Lab expert favorite for gliding seamlessly across both oily and dry complexions. However, some reviewers say it's not opaque enough to disguise dark spots.

EXPERT NOTE: "It has an almost whipped-like texture that is extremely easy to blend and feels super lightweight on skin," says Danusia Wnek, a chemist in the Beauty Lab who has combination skin with an oily T-zone. How we test the best concealers

testing concealers in the gh beauty lab

To find the best concealers, the GH Beauty Lab began with a pool of 150 concealers and prescreened the products to identify the top 26 candidates. Beauty Lab pros then collaborated with three makeup artists to evaluate the concealers after label-masking them to prevent brand bias. Makeup artists rated each product on coverage, texture, spreadability, blendability, smoothing effect, and overall satisfaction using a five-point scale. Scientists analyzed responses from 546 evaluation questions, along with input from Beauty Lab experts, editor home-use evaluations, and consumer testers, to inform the final selections.

How to find the best concealer for you

    ghi line

Concealers come in a range of consistencies, forms, and finishes, from liquid to cream to stick and beyond. The key is to find the right formula and tone for whatever issue you're trying to hide. A quick cheat sheet:

✔️ Shade: For undereye circles, opt for a color that's a shade or two lighter than your natural skin tone, which "will brighten up the undereye area and disguise the dark circles," says makeup artist Erica Whelan. For dark spots, look for peach undertones to neutralize the dark brown cast. To cover acne, try and match your skin tone exactly or grab a green- or yellow-tinted formula to help neutralize the redness of the spot.

✔️ Finish: For dark circles and undereye discoloration, "look for concealers that have radiant or luminizing formulas," says Whelan. For acne and dark spots, look for long-lasting matte finish that will stay in place all day. For mature skin, steer away from anything shimmery or too heavy, which "will look unnatural," cautions Whelan. Instead, choose a medium coverage liquid concealer and apply sparingly.

✔️ Formula and coverage: For concealing around the eyes, our pros prefer liquid formulas since creams can settle into fine lines and wrinkles on this thinner skin. For blemishes and acne as well as sun spots, dark spots, hyperpigmentation, or age spots, "choose a heavier cream formula like a stick concealer," advises Whelan, since they're designed to stay put.

    How to apply concealer

    ghi line

Concealer is the extra little step in face makeup that helps blur out any lingering discoloration. After site-specific skincare (we're talking a great eye cream and/or hydrating undereye patches), you should apply primer first, then "apply foundation first to even out the skin tone, then apply concealer to the spot for maximum coverage," says Whelan. Then, set it all with a loose face powder for the most flawless, long-lasting results.

But for the best results, it really depends on the area you're working on.

✔️ For dark circles, you'll get the best results if you "dot the concealer under the eye and tap the product into place with your ring finger or a small fluffy eye shadow brush," says Whelan.

✔️ To target an acne blemish, Whelan suggests applying with "a fine pointed brush to place the concealer exactly where you want it to go. Gently blend the edges of the concealer with a brush, edge of sponge, or finger to blend into the skin for a seamless blend."

✔️ For mature skin, buff on a liquid concealer with a small fluffy eyeshadow brush for a fresh, natural-looking finish.
