I have been a fan of K-beauty moisturizers for years now. With gentle and effective formulas that are known leaving the skin supple and hydrated, they really are ideal for delivering on those glass-skin expectations. “Formulations blend traditional ingredients, such as Centella asiatica, ginseng, rice, and snail mucin, with refined delivery systems, active encapsulation, and fermentation technologies," says Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty & Personal Care Lab Director Sabina Wizemann. "Korean formulas offer a lightweight texture, fast absorption, and layering, and are usually formulated as gels or jelly creams.”

Our top picks:

The only difficulty you'll have with Korean face moisturizers is selecting which one out there is best for you. There are options that target oily skin, others that cater to sensitive skin, and even those that address concerns like redness and irritation. Our list will help you parse through it all and land on the best Korean beauty face moisturizers to fit your needs.

Concentrated Ginseng Rejuvenating Cream

Pros

  • Deeply hydrating
  • Helps smooth the appearance of fine lines
  • Plumping

Cons

  • Expensive

One of Korea’s oldest and most storied skincare brands, Sulwhasoo is practically the poster child for OG K-beauty. The brand has long been dedicated to one of the country’s most celebrated and potent skincare ingredients, ginseng, and this cream is packed with it. The anti-aging formula contains ginseng actives, ginseng peptide, and a vitamin C derivative to improve the appearance of wrinkles and plump skin. I’ve always been impressed with the luscious texture and how hydrating it is, making it a worthy splurge.

Red Bean Water Gel Moisturizer

Pros

  • Lightweight formula
  • Controls excess oil
  • Soothing for sensitive skin

Cons

  • Texture may feel sticky to some

One of the best things about K-beauty is that it delivers the latest innovations at affordable prices—like this standout moisturizer. Beauty of Joseon is known for blending traditional Korean herbal medicine with modern innovations. In this case, they tapped red bean, which is chock-full of antioxidants and helps keep excess oil in check. The lightweight formula helps balance skin while delivering hydration. There’s also a triple peptide complex to boost elasticity and smooth skin.

Daily UV Defense Sunscreen

Pros

  • Glowy finish
  • Saves a step with SPF
  • Wears well under makeup

Cons

  • Some reviewers found the finish too shiny

A GH Beauty Award winner, this outstanding K-beauty sunscreen feels “lightweight and hydrating” on the skin, according to Wizemann. Providing broad-spectrum SPF 36 protection, it guards against UVA and UVB rays. The water-based formula leaves a glowy finish with no white cast, though some found it a little too shiny. It’s infused with green tea extract, sunflower seed oil, and cica to hydrate, nourish, and soothe, respectively.

Application of skincare product on the face
dr. jart ceramidin cream (50ml / 1.7 fl. oz.)

Pros

  • Strengthens skin barrier
  • Hydrates
  • Improves elasticity

Cons

  • Fragrance is polarizing

A healthy skin barrier is key to happy, hydrated skin, and this moisturizer is designed to do just that. It contains five types of ceramides and panthenol to strengthen the skin barrier and hydrate, plus it improves elasticity. Though technically fragrance-free, it contains botanical oils such as Pelargonium graveolens, olive, bergamot, and sage, which give the formula a very faint, comforting scent that was polarizing among some reviewers.

“This cream lives in my makeup bag, my medicine cabinet, and on my nightstand—and it is the first thing I pack when I travel. I love its unassuming, easily gliding, lightweight texture that instantly calms and comforts my skin, and it makes my makeup feel gentler and look prettier on my face,” Wizemann says.

A-CICA 365 Soothing Repair Cream pH 4.5

Pros

  • Fragrance-free for sensitive skin
  • Reduces redness
  • Help even skin tone

Cons

  • Cap can be hard to twist off

If your skin is looking red, this soothing cream—gentle enough for sensitive skin—can help. The hero ingredient is pH4.5CICA, a proprietary complex of centella asiatica, zinc, and PHA that calms and soothes skin. There’s also panthenol to support the moisture barrier, plus hyaluronic acid and glycerin to deeply moisturize. Note that one reviewer said the cap can be tricky to twist off.

“I have been really enjoying this facial moisturizer,” Wizemann says. “It is light and soothing, and over the weeks I have used it, my skin is much less reactive, with less redness and discomfort from dryness. It feels very light on the skin, and you do not need much to cover your entire face.”

Kojic Acid Turmeric Vita Capsule Cream

Pros

  • Light gel-like texture
  • Contains turmeric and kojic acid to brighten

Cons

  • Some reviewers found the texture sticky

As someone who suffers from major pigmentation issues, I consider this cream a go-to for fighting uneven patches and boosting overall brightness. Turmeric and kojic acid are the hero ingredients that help to even skin tone and minimize the appearance of dark spots. I also love the cream’s light-as-feather, gel-like texture, which instantly sinks into the skin, making it ideal for use with one of my favorite skincare gadgets, the Medicube Age-R Booster Pro. However, some reviewers found the texture sticky.

Rose Sleeping Mask
Now 21% Off

Pros

  • Lovely rose scent
  • Made with 95% damask rosewater
  • Helps smooth fine lines

Cons

  • More of a moisturizer than a true mask

Dubbed a “chiffon cream” by the brand, that name is exactly right—its gel texture is super lightweight and fluffy, yet still feels decadent thanks to the natural rose scent. When I apply it before bed, I wake up with glowing, plumped skin.

Damask rosewater, rich in vitamins, helps improve skin health, while hyaluronic acid hydrates and Centella asiatica soothes. Given its airy texture, it functions more as a daily moisturizer than a mask.

Peptide Pro Firming Moisturizer

Pros

  • Helps minimize appearance of wrinkles
  • Plumps
  • Firms

Cons

  • Some reviewers didn’t find it hydrating enough

Founded by esthetician Alicia Yoon, this Korean-American skincare brand is known for its effective formulas that are gentle enough for sensitive skin. This peptide-packed moisturizer (with 12, to be exact!) firms, hydrates, plumps, and strengthens the skin barrier, courtesy of four amino acids, vegan collagen, and a hyaluronic acid complex. Keep in mind that some reviewers didn’t find it hydrating enough.

BEST FOR DRY SKIN

Belif Aqua Bomb

Pros

  • Instantly hydrates
  • Plumps
  • Light texture

Cons

  • May not be ideal for acne-prone skin

Proof that you don’t need a heavy texture for a major dose of moisture, this lightweight gel really is a hydration bomb. The brand claims it only takes 10 seconds to feel a surge of moisture in your skin and delivers instant smoothing and plumping. Squalane strengthens the skin barrier, niacinamide gently exfoliates, and hyaluronic acid hydrates. But it may not be ideal for acne-prone skin, since some reviewers said it didn’t work for that skin type.

Pudding Calming Everyday Cream

Pros

  • Helps promote glass skin
  • Strengthens skin barrier
  • Calms with aloe vera

Cons

  • May not be hydrating enough for very dry skin

K-beauty is practically synonymous with glass skin, and this moisturizer is meant to get you that coveted glow. A ceramide complex strengthens the skin barrier, plus aloe vera and Centella asiatica calm and soothe skin. However, a reviewer with very dry skin found it wasn't moisturizing enough.

How we chose the best Korean face moisturizers

While these products were not part of a formal Lab test, we selected them based on Beauty Lab expertise, dermatologist and editor recommendations, and analysis of retailer reviews. We reviewed ingredient lists and considered feedback on texture, hydration, and visible results.

What to look for when shopping for a Korean face moisturizer

linebreak

“Korean face moisturizers are trending because we have not encountered this type of formulation at this scale. While texture is a significant factor in skincare, it is important to look for ingredients suitable for your skin type and age,” Wizemann says. Keep these factors in mind for each skin type:

✔️ Dry/aging: Look for ceramides, squalane, and fermented extract for dry and aging skin types, according to Wizemann. “Prioritize glycerin, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and ceramide-rich formulas,” says Kseniya Kobets, M.D., director of cosmetic dermatology at Montefiore Einstein Advanced Care.

✔️ Sensitive: Seek out formulas that claim to be formulated and optimized for sensitive skin.

✔️ Acne-prone: “Choose lighter textures and avoid excessive layering,” Dr. Kobets says.

What are the benefits of Korean face moisturizers?

linebreak

“The core benefit is improved barrier integrity and reduced transepidermal water loss, with many formulas also layering in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory botanicals like centella, which may help reduce redness and support skin resilience,” Dr. Kobets says. “When the barrier is strong, and inflammation is controlled, skin tolerates actives like retinoids and vitamin C much better and functions more predictably.”

What is the best way to apply a Korean beauty face moisturizer?

linebreak

“Just like with any other moisturizer, I would recommend applying it to slightly damp skin to enhance humectant binding and pressing gently into the skin,” Dr. Kobets says. “If layering, go from thinnest to thickest texture. In the morning, always follow with sunscreen.”
