An organic mattress topper is a great way to refresh your mattress. Popular choices like bouncy latex or plush wool are known for their excellent support and typically sleep cooler than your typical foam options.

Our materials scientists at the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab put 52 different mattress toppers (including 14 with organic certifications) to the test with the help of hundreds of at-home consumer testers. The below picks are top-performing styles from our tests with verified organic certifications.

Our top picks:

Take note: Organic labeling is regulated by the U. S. Department of Agriculture through the National Organic Program. "Certified organic" is a regulated term that refers to fibers that are grown without synthetic pesticides, use less water, and produce less waste. This doesn't necessarily mean the entire manufacturing process is organic. Certifications from the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) mean the full production process adheres to strict organic guidelines.

Pros

  • Excellent craftsmanship and construction
  • Top scores for support and longevity from testers
  • Two firmness options and heights

Cons

  • No straps to keep the topper in place

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Eco-conscious shoppers in search of a mattress topper to refresh their bed. The 2-inch model is good for a small upgrade, while the 3-inch style will greatly change the feel of your bed.

We've tested dozens of organic mattress toppers, but this one consistently outperforms the rest for its crowd-pleasing comfort and support. It holds key certifications from the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).

Best of all, you can choose between Dunlop latex for a supportive feel or Talalay latex for added plushness in two different heights. Few brands offer both selections, and Avocado does it best.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️ Cushioning comfort: Our testers were impressed with how this topper changed the feel of their beds and held up over time. One who tried the 2-inch Plush version said, "It completely transformed my firm mattress into a comfortable, supportive cloud." Another who tried the 2-inch Medium version said, "It added softness without making the bed feel overly cushioned or unsupportive."

✔️ Solid support: A tester who tried the 3-inch Medium option shared that it added more support and uniformity to his old mattress: "Whether I stay in the same position for a long time or roll over to another spot, it feels just as comfortable and consistent—no lumps, bumps, or divots."

✔️ Top-performing brand: Avocado is a pioneer in the organic bedding industry. Their mattresses and toppers are some of the best we've tested, and their commitment to sustainability is admirable.

✔️ Some shifting: The only issue was the lack of corner straps: One user found that it shifted a bit unless she used a mattress protector.

Organic Latex Mattress Topper

Pros

  • Ergonomic design for tailored support
  • Supportive and pressure-relieving feel
  • Four firmness levels and three heights

Cons

  • 2-inch and 3-inch versions don't come with a cover

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Those who want a no-frills topper with much-needed support and don't mind the lack of a cover. The 4-in. model with a cover is a great choice for anyone who wants a more substantial topper.

Like Avocado, Turmerry's certified organic topper comes in multiple heights and firmness levels but skips the cover (unless you spring for the 4-inch version) for a lower cost. The latex itself has premium features: The zoned support outperformed pricier toppers in our tests and was a favorite amongst side and back sleepers. There's also a 120-day sleep trial.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️ Zoned design: The zoned design features seven areas of varying firmness. As a result, you'll get extra give or support where you need it the most, like the lumbar region.

✔️ Pressure-relief and support: Our testers gave it high scores for support and highlighted its pressure relief. One shared that while the topper contoured nicely to her body, the latex foam didn't compress under her body weight, so it was easy to comfortably change positions throughout the night.

✔️ No included cover: The 2-inch and 3-inch versions don't come with a cover, so you'll have to pay extra if you want a zippered mattress topper cover.

Pros

  • High scores for comfort and support
  • Removable, washable cover
  • 365-day sleep trial

Cons

  • Some testers found the cover thin

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Back or hip pain sufferers who need a slightly softer surface that will cushion their pressure pointsOur testers with chronic back and hip pain gave this pick high scores across the board for its cushioning yet supportive feel and notable pressure relief. It ships quickly, has a generous 365-day trial period, and comes with a removable, washable cover.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:✔️ High praise from testers: Testers highlighted the overall comfort and easy setup process. Others liked that there wasn't any noticeable odor, which is a common concern for latex. All agreed that they didn't overheat on it and liked how it softened their beds just enough.

✔️ Excellent pressure relief: Several testers called this topper "comfortable yet supportive," and one praised the pressure-relieving "ahhhhh feeling."

✔️ Removable cover: Our testers appreciated that the topper came with a cotton cover. Some wished it was a bit more substantial but appreciated that they could remove it and wash it in case of any spills.

Natural Wool Mattress Topper

Pros

  • Soft, plush feel
  • Temperature-regulating properties
  • GOTS-certified materials

Cons

  • Not returnable

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Side or back sleepers looking for a luxurious, plush pillow-top layer. It's also great for both hot and cold sleepers, thanks to wool's inherent temperature regulation.

Opt for this wool-filled mattress topper over your standard latex topper for true indulgence. The pillow-top design feels cozy, and the airy wool naturally regulates your temperature. Each topper is tufted by hand for an elevated feel, but the brand doesn't offer returns due to safety and sanitary regulations.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️ Comfort & cooling: One tester compared the plush feel to a "big hug," while others swore it helped ease their back pain. Another user shared, "It is quiet, not at all hot, and feels very comfortable." While some testers were initially apprehensive about the wool fill, they found that it kept them at a comfortable body temperature.

✔️ Pillow-top design: If there's one thing PlushBeds excels at, it's a soft pillowy top. We were impressed by the generous loft from the ethically-sourced virgin wool fill and the softness of the organic cotton. And while pricey, it's undeniably luxurious.

✔️ Some shifting: We suggest pairing this topper with a mattress protector as our testers found that it didn't stay in place well if used without another layer underneath their sheets.

Best for Side Sleepers

Happsy Organic Mattress Topper

Credit: Happsy

Pros

  • Plush latex easily contours to your body
  • Cloud-like feel for comfort
  • Less noticeable odor, according to testers

Cons

  • May not perfectly align with all mattresses

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Side sleepers who need a plusher layer that'll accommodate their shoulders and hips

Compared to similar picks on our list, we like how this latex topper provides a plush, pressure-relieving surface that still feels supportive. It's also one of the easiest to shop for with the convenience of Amazon, though it's shipped directly from Happsy rather than Amazon, so delivery times can vary.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️ Contouring comfort: Testers praised the exceptional comfort of this topper. One described it as "cloud-like," and remarked that the plush, contouring feel was perfect for sleeping on her side. Others appreciated the minimal odor.

✔️ Top scores from side sleepers: The soft cushioning still felt sturdy in our tests, which is great for side sleepers, who need a soft (but not too soft) surface to avoid stress on the shoulders or hips.

✔️ Edges didn't align well with some mattresses: The snag with this one is that the topper didn't align perfectly with some mattresses in our tests, but users liked the comfort above all else.

Pros

  • High scores for support from real users
  • Durable and resilient latex
  • Machine-washable outer cover

Cons

  • Testers found the topper shifted occasionally with use

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Users who find their current mattress too soft, especially if they feel like they're sinking in too much

Unlike most toppers, this one comes in both Medium and Firm. While it can't completely revive a sagging mattress, the responsive latex was a hit amongst our testers for quickly refreshing their bed. You can also remove the organic cotton cover for routine laundering and even purchase a new one if desired.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️ Supportive feel: This topper uses dense Dunlop latex for a firmer feel that's springy with excellent resilience, helping to evenly distribute your body weight with uniform support.

✔️ Improved sleep quality: Multiple testers reported improvements in their quality of sleep after sleeping on the topper for a few weeks. One even shared that it "felt comfortable from the start."

✔️ Some shifting: The caveat was that some testers found that the topper had a tendency to shift in the night, so we recommend pairing it with a mattress protector to help keep it in place.

Box-Stitched Organic Latex Topper

Pros

  • Plush, shredded latex
  • Pressure-relieving and supportive
  • Top scores from side sleepers

Cons

  • Not as soft as pillow-top toppers with a wool fill

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Shoppers looking for a plush topper that isn't made of wool. The shredded latex has a bouncy and resilient nature that isn't as quick to compress over time.

This pillow-top topper uses shredded latex for a plush feel that doesn't compromise on support. It felt indulgent and luxurious in our tests, and the latex foam added a springy feel. It's a bit of a splurge, but the price point is justified given the high-quality materials and meticulous construction.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️ High praise from side sleepers: Testers who sleep on their side gave it top scores for its decadent pressure relief. One said, "I am not exaggerating when I say it transformed my sleep. I slept like a baby from the first night."

✔️ Support: Others underscored the sturdy support and reported improved sleep: "I felt more refreshed when waking up than usual," one tester said.

✔️ Pillow-top design: Compared to other latex mattress toppers on the market, this one has both a unique design and feel. However, if you typically sleep on a down- or fiber-filled topper, it won't feel plush enough.

Other organic mattress toppers we tested

double line break

We tested several other popular toppers that didn't make the cut. Here are our thoughts on some notable styles plus others we're curious about:

  • Brooklyn Bedding's 3” Latex Topper is one of the few latex toppers on the market that uses Talalay latex. It earned high praise from our testers for its cushy, plush support, but it isn't certified organic.
  • Birch's Plush Organic Mattress Topper is made of both latex and wool with a textured backing to help it stay in place, though some testers still reported shifting. Others were divided on its effectiveness: While some liked the Medium feel, others felt like it didn't make a significant difference.
  • Saatva's Organic Quilted Topper comes at a premium price, but it looks more polished (almost like the quilted top of a mattress) than other toppers we've seen. Our testers liked the sturdy support, but some found that it shifted on their beds.
  • Coyuchi's Washable Wool Filled Mattress Topper felt more like a mattress pad with corner straps than a true topper in our tests. At its low profile (1.5 inches) it didn't significantly change the feel of our testers' beds.
  • We're considering testing two more toppers with organic certifications: Earthfoam's Organic Topper, and Evaya's PillowTopper. Both styles combine latex with a layer of wool batting.

How we test mattress toppers

double line break

To evaluate mattress toppers, our analysts at the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab focus on real-world performance over short-term Lab testing. In recent years, we've evaluated 52 popular mattress toppers (including 14 organic styles) with the help of at-home consumer testers of all sizes and sleep styles. For toppers with organic claims, we confirm relevant certifications.

Our at-home consumer testers provide feedback on the entire user experience, from the initial setup to long periods of sleep testing. Here are some of the factors we consider when evaluating mattress toppers:

✔️ Materials and certifications: Our analysts confirm that the toppers are made of natural materials (i.e., no memory foam or synthetic fabrics used). We also confirm they're GOTS and GOLS certified. While we do consider other certifications that address nontoxic and health-related interests, these can be misleading because they may not validate organic claims.

✔️ Ease of use: Our testers report how easy (or difficult) it is to set up the topper on their beds.

✔️ Overall comfort: Testers score the topper on how comfortable it feels to lie on at night.

✔️ Comfortable body temperature: They share whether they maintained a comfortable sleeping temperature at night when using the topper.

✔️ Sound: Each topper is assessed for noise, so we can check if the toppers stay quiet and undetectable during use.

✔️ Firmness: Testers share if and how the topper changes the feel of their mattresses, including overall firmness.

✔️ Stay-in-place capabilities: Users rate each topper on how much it shifts around on the bed during use. It's noted if testers use the topper in combination with a mattress protector or mattress pad instead of on its own.

✔️ Overall satisfaction: Lastly, our testers share whether they liked sleeping on the mattress topper and whether they plan to continue using it. They also compare the topper to their normal mattress and other toppers they've used in addition to sharing any other likes, dislikes, or comments.

What to keep in mind when shopping for the best organic mattress toppers

double line break

Picking the right mattress topper will depend on your individual needs and preferences, so here are some things to consider when searching for the best organic mattress topper for you:

✔️ Thickness: Most of our top mattress topper picks are at least 2 inches thick, as we've found this height makes a noticeable difference in our tests, but an even thicker topper will offer additional support. If you're generally satisfied with the feel of your mattress and only want to make a small adjustment, a thinner model may suffice. Note that the thickness of the topper will add to the height of your mattress. Make sure your sheets can still accommodate the total combined height.

✔️ Softness: If your mattress is too firm, opt for a Plush or Soft topper. If you're looking for something with more support to firm up your existing mattress, look for a topper listed as Medium or Firm.

✔️ Sleep position: Additionally, make sure to account for your sleep position when picking out an appropriate firmness. Side sleepers need a plusher surface while stomach sleepers need a firmer surface for optimal spinal alignment. Back sleepers and combination sleepers are best off with something in the middle. If sleeping with a partner, make sure to take into account both sleep positions and individual preferences.

✔️ Materials: Feeling pain when you wake up? An organic latex topper can evenly distribute your body weight for added pressure relief around your joints. If you want solid support, Dunlop latex is a safe bet while Talalay latex has more pockets of air for a cushier feel. Latex tends to be better for those looking for more firmness and support, while wool can help sleepers searching for more cushioning or softness.

✔️ Stay-in-place features: If you're concerned about your topper shifting at night, look for one with straps that hook onto your mattress or consider adding a mattress protector or mattress pad on top to help keep everything in place.

✔️ Care: While most mattress toppers aren't washable, some may come with a removable cover that can be washed by hand or in a machine.

What organic certifications are there?

double line break

How can you tell if something is really organic? There are several certifications and emblems to look out for. Here are some of the most common you'll see for organic mattress toppers:

✔️ Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS): This third-party certification confirms that the whole product meets strict organic, sustainability, ecological, and social criteria throughout the entire process of creating the product from growing to packaging. The product must be composed of at least 70% organic material to meet the requirements. Take note that while some brands may claim to use GOTS-certified textiles (like covers), GOTS only certifies whole products.

✔️ Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS): This certification ensures that a latex product contains at least 95% organically grown natural rubber latex.

You may see the following other certifications on products, but they may not have to do with whether the materials are organic. The following certifications are also commonly seen on bedding products:

✔️ eco-INSTITUT Certified: This certification usually refers to latex and means the material has been laboratory tested by an international third-party organization for indoor air quality with no emissions or VOCs (volatile organic compounds) present. It doesn't necessarily mean the latex is organic.

✔️ OEKO-TEX: This well-known emblem ensures that the product contains no harmful levels of certain chemicals.

✔️ GREENGUARD: This indoor air quality certification verifies the topper has met chemical emission standards. There's also a stricter GREENGUARD Gold certification, which requires lower levels of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

How long do organic toppers last?

linebreak

A good organic mattress topper will typically last around five years, depending on material and use. You can help prolong the lifespan by rotating the topper 180 degrees every few months for even wear.

  • Latex mattress toppers have excellent resiliency and durability, so they can last longer than foam or fiber-based toppers. Solid latex tends to be more resilient than shredded latex.
  • Wool-filled mattress toppers will have a shorter lifespan in comparison, as the fibers tend to compress over time.

Remember: If your topper consistently feels flat, uneven or less supportive, it’s likely time to replace it.

What’s better: latex or wool mattress toppers?

double line break

Latex mattress toppers, like foam toppers, will greatly change the overall feel of your bed. They have a springy feel and offer excellent support.

Wool toppers are similar to pillow-top-style toppers: They create a plush top layer with a cozy feel. They also offer natural temperature-regulation.
