Another cool feature: This fan will automatically adjust its fan speed based on room temperature, so you no longer have to get up or even grab the remote to make adjustments. We also like that you can change the angle of the fan’s wind so you’re guaranteed to feel airflow no matter where you are. However, if you want to control the fan via an app or Google and Alexa, you'll need to pay extra for Levoit's smart tower fan.

- Lightweight
Cons
- Only five fan speeds
Dimensions: 27.31 x 20.9 x 83.39 inches | Oscillation: Yes | Settings: 5 speeds | Remote: Yes
Affordable without skimping on essential features, this compact tower fan earned high scores in our Lab performance tests. It’s a user-friendly option, with intuitive buttons, simple assembly and a carry handle so you can easily move it from room to room. It also features five fan speeds, a timer, oscillation and a small remote. Our pros note that while it's on the smaller side, it's a good choice for bedrooms and offices. We also appreciate that even though it's lightweight, it's supported by a sturdy base.
Pros

- Quiet
- Sleek design
- Smart connectivity
Cons
- Doesn't have remote holder
Dimensions: 13 x 13 x 42 inches | Oscillation: 90 degrees | Settings: 9 speeds and 4 modes | Remote: Yes
A Good Housekeeping Home Renovation Award-winning brand, Dreo fans have historically performed well in Lab tests. Not only did this fan effectively cool spaces in our recent tests, but its sleek design is an attractive addition to any living room or bedroom. Our pros love its easy-to-use LED display, and we also appreciate how quietly it operates.
While a remote is included, you can adjust settings straight from the Dreo app on your phone or via Google and Alexa. We also like that you can schedule times for your fan to turn on and off, for instance at bedtime, and that auto mode senses the temperature in the room and automatically adjusts fan speed. Our pros also point out that it has efficient energy use, and that air can be felt up to 25 feet away from the fan.
Pros
- Vents can be directed in two directions
- Operates horizontally and vertically
- Bladeless design
- Height adjustable
Cons
- Doesn’t feature a display
Dimensions: 11.77 x 31.57 x 44.84 inches | Oscillation: 180 degrees | Settings: 10 speeds | Remote: Yes
Minimalist and bladeless, this tower fan has one of the most innovative designs we’ve seen in recent tests. It features two vents that can be twisted in different directions for optimal coverage, which is useful when you want to cool two areas simultaneously. But what we love most is its versatility: It pivots horizontally and vertically depending on your cooling needs, and its height is adjustable. It also oscillates 180 degrees and features up to 10 speed settings. Just note that it doesn't feature a display so you'll need the remote if you want to do anything other than turn the fan on and off or adjust the fan speed.
Pros
- Sleek, bladeless design
- Also an air purifier
- 350 degree oscillation
- Can be operated via remote or app
Cons
- Expensive
Dimensions: 4.72 x 8.7 x 42 inches | Oscillation: 350 degrees | Settings: 10 speeds | Remote: Yes
The Dyson TP09 combines an air purifier and fan in one, featuring a HEPA filter that captures dust, allergens and other pollutants so you can breathe better at night. Not only does its super sleek bladeless design set it apart from traditional tower fans, but it doesn’t sacrifice performance.
Though it's pricier than other tower fans, our pros appreciate its 350-degree oscillation that circulates air among all corners of the room and we love that you can control the fan and monitor air quality directly in the MyDyson app. According to our test engineer, the fan’s filters were extremely easy to install and the controls were intuitive to use.
Pros
- Small, compact size
- Lightweight and portable
- Great price
Cons
- Too small for large spaces
- Remote not available
Dimensions: 5 x 5 x 13 inches | Oscillation: Yes | Settings: 4 speeds | Remote: No
If you’re tight on space, consider this mini tower fan from Honeywell that comes ready to use and will comfortably squeeze onto crowded nightstands and desks. Though our pros don't recommend using it to cool a room as it's not nearly as powerful as larger tower fans, we like that it provides airflow at shorter distances. On top of being super lightweight and one of the easiest fans to move around on this list, our pros found its on-display buttons easy to use and appreciate that the mini fan oscillates, has four fan speed options and comes at a great price. Just note that a remote isn't available so you'll have to change speeds on the fan itself.
How we test fans
The Good Housekeeping Institute Home Improvement and Outdoor Lab tests and provides recommendations on a range of home-related products, including cooling equipment, appliances, air purifiers, humidifiers and more.
Over the past two years, we've evaluated more than 25 of the most popular fans on the market, focusing on safety, performance, ease of use and energy efficiency.
✔️ Performance: Our pros measured airflow speed using an anemometer in a controlled windowless room at both maximum and minimum settings. This, combined with energy usage data, helped assess each fan's efficiency. A decibel meter was used in a quiet room to evaluate and compare noise levels.
✔️ Safety: We checked for potential risks, ensuring no fingers or rings could pass through the grate to reach moving parts or pinch points. We also conducted a tip-over test to determine stability using a force gauge.
✔️ Ease of use: We recorded the dimensions and weight of each fan to gauge portability. We also assessed ease of cleaning and assembly/disassembly.
✔️ Extra features: The number of settings and additional functionalities, such as oscillation, remote controls, smart integrations and automatic shut-off systems, were also evaluated to identify standout features.
What to look for when shopping for tower fans
✔️ Airflow reach: Opt for a fan with a wide airflow range to cool more than just the immediate area in front of it. Manufacturers often specify the airflow reach or provide an approximate room size the fan can cover.
✔️ Size: Bigger isn’t always better. Larger, more powerful fans (great for cooling bigger spaces like apartments) tend to be noisier, whereas smaller fans can be quiet yet sufficient for cooling bedrooms at night. For large rooms, choose a fan designed to handle higher cooling demands.
✔️ Speed settings: Some tower fans offer up to 10 or more speed options. Faster speeds usually mean increased noise, so ensure your fan has at least high and low-speed settings for flexibility.
✔️ Adjustability: A good fan should efficiently cool a large area without constant repositioning. Features like oscillation, adjustable angles and multiple speed settings provide added versatility for directing airflow as needed.
✔️ Ease of cleaning: Choose a fan that's easy to disassemble for regular cleaning and removal of dust and dirt from blades and grills, which is particularly important for allergy sufferers. Bladeless fans eliminate grills and blades but may have filters requiring occasional cleaning or replacement.
✔️ Timer: For automatic shutoff after a set duration of time (like once you've fallen asleep), look for fans with a timer feature. Some models offer a sleep mode, which reduces airflow, noise and display lights.
