Sick of razor burn and nicks from shaving and irritation from waxing? Laser hair removal may be your best bet—and you can now skip the office visit and do it from the comfort of your couch (or bathroom). At-home IPL hair removal devices will save you time and money and don't have the annoying and uncomfortable side effects of many other hair removal methods.

Many studies show that IPL (a.k.a. intense pulsed light) is effective for long-term hair growth reduction. But how exactly does IPL hair removal work? IPL is a broad-spectrum light that targets melanin, the pigment on the hair follicle, "destroying the root and stopping its regrowth,” says Bertha Baum, M.D., a dermatologist in Boca Raton and Hallandale, Florida. "With regular use of these at-home devices, the treatment can be efficacious and safe."

Our top picks:

Before you start zapping, you'll want to choose an FDA-cleared tool that's effective and safe. The Good Housekeeping Institute's Beauty Lab evaluated dozens of devices: our scientists reviewed their instruction manuals and checked the flash and sensors on each one. Keep reading for our top Lab picks as well as recommendations from dermatologists.

Lumea 9000 Series IPL Hair Removal Device

Pros

  • Easy to use and hold
  • Very versatile with five energy settings and four attachments
  • Consistent flashes while using
  • Doesn't burn skin

Cons

  • Harder to use on bikini area

Our top-tested pick in the GH Beauty Lab’s most recent hair removal study, Philips’ device comes with four attachments for the face, bikini, underarms, and body. It uses the brand’s SenseIQ technology which has three sensors to read your skin tone and adjust the temperature accordingly, has five light energy settings, and a safety system to detects good skin contact before flashing.

Buy if: You are looking to remove hair on large areas like arms and legs. You may want to pass if you are just focused on the bikini area, as testers found that area tricky with this device.

Tester notes: They found that it was super easy to use and hold, had a comfortable power level (meaning, not too strong!), and consistent flashes when using. Plus, it did not burn skin.

Recommended usage: Every two weeks for four treatments and then touch-ups monthly (or as needed). The brand claims over 90 percent hair reduction in three treatments.

The Flasher 2.0
TargetAlso Consider

Pros

  • Lightweight, compact design
  • Brand offers full refunds and device replacement
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • Shorter cord length
  • No precision head attachment

Nood is a rising star when it comes to IPL hair removal. The brand’s newest IPL hair removal handset, The Flasher 2.0, is light and compact. It includes seven intensity levels to choose from based on your skin’s sensitivity. It also comes with 600,000 flashes, and the brand will replace your device if you ever run out. Plus, the brand offers customers a full refund within 90 days, no questions asked, so you can have peace of mind knowing that you won't lose out if the device doesn’t work for you.

Skip if: You are just looking to just do small spots. One tester found that the bright light of the flashes can escape from the sides since it doesn't come with a precision head attachment for smaller, bony areas, potentially making it less effective and unsafe for your eyes.

Tester notes: They raved that both the instructions and device were easy to use. One tester appreciated the on-off button, as some IPL devices do not have, which means they can turn on as soon as you plug them in.

Recommended usage: Twice a week for eight weeks, then touch-ups as needed.

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Automatic skin tone sensor
  • Comes with an ergonomic precision head attachment

Cons

  • Turns on automatically and the fans start whirring when you plug it in

SmoothSkin’s device has a special sensor that automatically detects your skin color to apply the right amount of light intensity, and it won’t flash if your skin color is too dark or if the device is not held properly against your skin. In addition, it has three comfort modes, which eliminates the guesswork of which mode to use for different areas of your body.

Buy if: You are new to IPL or are looking for an instant effect. One tester noted that she saw noticeable results with this device after a single use.

Tester notes: One shared how easy the device was to use as a newbie. Others noted minimal discomfort when using both the speed and gentle modes and that the user guide was very informative. One thing to watch out for: the device turns on automatically when plugged in, so just be ready.

Recommended usage: Once a week for 12 weeks, then touch-ups as needed.

Braun Silk Expert Pro 5

Pros

  • Automatic skin tone sensor
  • Quick treatment time
  • Gentle sensitivity modes

Cons

  • Some say it takes longer than 12 weeks to see results

With this speedy IPL hair removal device, the brand claims that you can treat both legs in under five minutes. Like SmoothSkin's Pure Fit, it includes a built-in sensor that automatically detects the color of your skin, maximizing the safety and effectiveness of each treatment. It also has three sensitivity modes: standard, gentle, and extra gentle.

Try if: You are pressed for time. Many testers say that this device works fast, taking little time in between each flash compared to other IPL devices they’ve tried.

Tester notes: GH Beauty Lab Reviews Analyst Chiara Butler has used this device from Braun and noticed slowing of her leg hair growth after four weeks of using it once a week. Plus, testers like how easy it is to use: and the varying head sizes. Note that some reported that it takes longer than 12 weeks to see results.

Recommended usage: Once a week for 12 weeks, then touch-ups as needed.

Best Smart IPL Hair Removal Device

Braun Skin i expert

Credit: Braun

Pros

  • Multiple treatment heads
  • Wide range of intensity levels
  • Won't overheat
  • Quick results

Cons

  • Some users didn't like having to use an app

A Beauty Award winner, Braun's latest IPL device is the first Smart IPL tool: it's Wi-Fi enabled and connects to an app which helps you keep track of your treatments and your hair reduction progress. You can track treatments for each body area, and the app reminds you when it’s time for another treatment. Plus, its effects are super speedy: it claims to permanently reduce hair in just three weeks.

"While the technology is new, the hardware of the device itself is mostly the same as the Silk Expert Pro 5 (another of our picks on this list)," Butler says. It has a variety of setting options including 10 intensity levels, three comfort levels, and four heads: one wide, one standard, and two precision heads for face and body (which are labeled so you won't confuse them).

Buy if: You’re tech-savvy and like to track your progress and be reminded when it’s treatment time.

Expert notes: "The contact sensor and skin tone sensor on this IPL are really impressive," she adds. "It won’t flash until the lamp is fully pressed against the skin, so that you don’t accidentally look into the lamp."

Recommended usage: Using the app, select the desired body part. The system will set the appropriate duration. Hit start and follow the instructions on the screen. According to the brand, you will see visible results in three weeks, but they recommend weekly treatments for 12 weeks to achieve optimal results, and then monthly maintenance treatments after.

PEACH 2 IPL Hair Removal Device

Pros

  • Ergonomically friendly
  • Treatment is comfortable
  • Vents deliver cool air while using
  • Large treatment head works on different body parts

Cons

  • Device needs to be unlocked by app before first use

Encased in a soft touch silicone material, this pretty peach device has a very unique treatment head where the lamp is surrounded by a ring of soft silicone. Plus, there are air vents inside the silicone ring that deliver cool air to the treatment area.

Buy if: Comfort is key for you when doing hair removal. But you may want to skip if you don’t want to work with an app while treating.

Tester notes: Butler found that while the treatment head is much bigger than the other IPLs she looked at, the silicone head does conform to smaller areas (like the ankles) quite well. "However, on a very small area like the chin, I think some light will escape," she adds. She found it very comfortable to use on her legs and never experienced discomfort, even at the highest setting.

Butler was not a fan of the companion app. She notes that the device must be “unlocked” by scanning a barcode or entering the serial number into the app before the first use, which she found unnecessary. Fortunately that process only takes place once at the initial use.

Recommended usage: Use for 10 minutes once a week. The brand claims users can see visible results in 12 weeks.

Silk'n Motion Premium

Pros

  • Doesn't cause irritation
  • Hair grew back slowly after one use
  • Easy to use on arms and legs
  • Compact

Cons

  • Instructions are not easy to follow

Another winner in the GH Beauty Lab’s hair removal study, this customizable HPL (”Home Pulsed Light,” the brand’s version of IPL) device from Silk’n is gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin. It has a built-in system that works with a skin color sensor to automatically adjust the energy level accordingly to reduce it to a safe level if the skin tone is too dark.

Buy if: You have sensitive or easily irritable skin. Our testers gave it the highest score for having no irritation during or after use.

Tester notes: The device scored high in our testing for slow hair regrowth after just one use and for being easy to use on legs and arms. Plus, testers loved that it’s compact and easy to store. Their one complaint: the instructions are not every easy to follow.

Recommended usage: Two weeks apart for the first four treatments, four weeks apart for treatments five through seven, and as needed after.

Credit: Ulike

Pros

  • Has a stubborn hair mode for thicker hair
  • Cooling feature works quickly
  • Easy and comfortable to use

Cons

  • Some testers experienced irritation after using

Ulike's newest IPL device has upped its game in features and power levels. "It has four modes for convenience: a fast mode, a normal mode, a high power mode, and a stubborn hair mode, each with increasing light intensity," explains Butler. "The stubborn hair mode is designed for areas of thicker hair, like the underarms, and emits two flashes per press of the button, a feature I haven’t seen from other devices." It also has an automatic flash mode for gliding on large areas, a manual flash mode for small areas, and a skin tone sensor that adjusts the light intensity automatically based on skin tone, a new feature for Ulike.

Buy if: You are looking a device with a variety of modes and settings for different body parts or if you have very thick hair. Skip if your skin is on the sensitive side.

Tester notes: Butler notes that the cooling feature of the treatment head is unique: "The treatment head got so cold while the device was on that I felt condensation forming on it before I started my treatment." This feature is designed to comfort the skin as the flashes heat up the hair follicles.

In the GH Beauty Lab’s most recent hair removal study, testers gave the tool the highest score for both hair reduction after repeated use and being easy to use on all body parts, including the bikini area, arms, underarms, and face. It gave the fastest results of the devices tested. While it is speedy and strong, a few testers did experience some irritation (including hives) after use.

Recommended usage: Connect to power, put on sunglasses (for extra protection), and press flush against skin. The brand recommends using it consistently every two days for the first two weeks for maximum hair reduction and slower hair regrowth.

How we test IPL hair removal devices

double line break
testing the best ipl devices
Philip Friedman

Our GH Beauty Lab experts regularly evaluate hair removal products ranging from waxing kits to depilatory creams and epilators. In our most recent study on IPL devices, we evaluated four tools on three testers each, who had varying skin tones and hair types. Over the three-month study, we tracked observations related to hair reduction, comfort, and ease of use.

testing the ulike ipl device in the gh beauty lab

In previous studies on at-home laser and IPL devices, we tried the tools ourselves and evaluated how long our legs stayed smooth. We tested the skin contact sensor on each model to check that it would only flash when in contact with skin. We also checked each device’s cord length, which can impact ease of use. Along with evaluating comfort, safety features, ease of use, and visible hair reduction results, we noted each device’s features and overall user experience. We also gave six devices to Good Housekeeping Institute testers for at-home trials. After testing, they filled out a survey about the device’s ease of use, performance, and their overall satisfaction with it.

The devices featured in this article were evaluated through either Beauty Lab testing studies or Good Housekeeping Beauty Awards assessments.

What to look for when shopping for the best at-home hair removal devices

"

✔️ FDA clearance: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is a government agency that regulates the safety and efficacy of products on the market. When a laser or IPL hair removal device is FDA-cleared, it means that the agency has evaluated it and determined that it is safe and effective for consumer use. In other words, the device works as intended, and it will not cause harm if used as instructed. Look for hair removal devices with FDA clearance to ensure it meets these standards, as all of our picks above have.

✔️ Skin tones: First and foremost, figure out what skin tones it will work best on and if that includes yours. Derma-pathologist Gretchen Frieling, M.D., adds that users with lighter skin and darker hair will see the best results. Many machines won't be able to pick up lighter hair colors (blonde, gray, or red), or won't be able to differentiate dark hair from dark skin. However, some devices are an exception to this rule and work across a multitude of skin types.

✔️ Number of flashes: Flashes are the quick bursts of light that the lamp in a hair removal device produces to treat an area of skin. These lamps can burn out just like the standard light bulbs you use around your house. In some laser and IPL devices, the lamp can only produce a limited number of flashes until it burns out, at which point you would need to replace the cartridge or the device itself. So, the more flashes, the better. However, many of the newer devices come with unlimited flashes, which means you don't have to worry about the lamp burning out while you enjoy a lifetime of smooth skin.

If you are looking for a cordless device, consider battery life. "If you are trying to target a larger area it can take many pulses, so just be sure to look at the battery life before you begin," says Joie Tavernise, medical esthetician and founder of JTAV Clinical Skincare. "Some only have a 30-minute battery life when it is fully charged."

✔️ Automatic light intensity adjustment: If you’re nervous about trying laser hair removal at home, shop for devices that automatically detect your skin tone and adjust the light intensity level. Otherwise, you’ll have to manually figure out what level is best for you by deciphering a skin tone chart in the instructions or by starting at the lowest level and working your way up.

✔️ Safety features: Some devices have sensors that won’t flash if your skin tone is too dark or if the device is not held properly against the skin. Additionally, IPL is a broad spectrum light, meaning it consists of a range of wavelengths, and this may include UV wavelengths that can damage your skin. Most IPL devices have a filter that blocks out the UV light, but always double-check for it.

✔️ Design and attachments: Treatment head attachments of different sizes make it easier to treat a wide range of body zones. Some devices with skin contact sensors won’t flash unless the treatment head has full contact with the skin, which can be tricky in small, curved areas like the ankles or chin. Small attachments help in those areas, and wider attachments help treat large areas like the legs quickly.

✔️ Clear instructions: Whether you’re new to laser hair removal or a seasoned expert, you should always read the included instructions before operating. Look for a product that has a great instruction booklet. You can often find the instructions online or watch a video tutorial before you make the purchase as well.

✔️ Cord length: Ensure the product has a long enough cord to provide for a flexible user experience. For maximum versatility, choose a device that's cordless.

✔️ Money back offers: If you’re new to laser or IPL and aren’t sure if it’s right for you, try a brand that offers customers a money-back guarantee. If you don’t like it or aren't getting the desired results, you can return it for a refund.

What’s the difference between professional and at-home laser hair removal devices?

linebreak

The main difference between professional and at-home tools is the intensity of their light sources and the nature of their light sources. As mentioned above, laser hair removal devices (both professional and those few available for at-home use) emit “a laser that corresponds to a single wavelength of light,” says Tavernise. Almost all at-home hair removal devices actually use IPL technology. "IPL stands for 'intense pulsed light' and uses broad-spectrum visible light."

Does IPL really remove hair permanently?

"

While the results from IPL hair removal can last a long time, it is not permanent. “Now, we refer to it as laser hair reduction instead of laser hair removal, and the same applies to IPL,” says Dr. Baum. “In general, hormones and other factors can affect the laser and IPL results, and the hair may come back.” But for some of her patients, the results last years without any touch-ups.

Advertisement - Continue Reading Below

What is better: IPL or laser hair removal?

"

“IPL works by emitting scattered wavelengths of light, unlike laser treatments which emit a specific wavelength,” Dr. Baum explains. Both are effective treatment options, however, there are pros and cons to both. While IPL hair removal is less expensive and available for at-home use, laser hair removal takes fewer treatment sessions to see results, and it works on all skin tones. When deciding which one is the better option for you, first consult with your dermatologist, then consider your needs and the kind of results you want to see.

Are IPL and laser hair removal devices safe?

"

"Lasers and IPL are both very powerful technologies that can be dangerous when used incorrectly, but for the most part these devices are safe," says Tavernise. At-home devices are made with significantly less power and the light is less concentrated than you will find in a professional setting. "This does not mean that there is zero chance that something can go wrong, but the odds of something happening are very low," she says.

Tavernise advises that the most important precaution to take is ensuring that your skin tone will react well to the treatment. "Those with a high amount of melanin and pigment in their skin have a higher risk of getting burned and scarring so it is crucial to check that the device will work with your skin tone." IPL removal typically does not work for dark skin tones (skin types 5 and 6 on the Fitzpatrick scale ) or light hair colors (blonde, red, or gray), and it’s possible to damage your skin if you use the device improperly. As such, Dr. Baum warns that those with skin types 5 and 6 on the Fitzpatrick scale should not undergo IPL treatments, and those with skin type 4 should be cautious.

The GH Beauty Lab advises to always follow the particular device's guidelines—and not do it more often than suggested—as each one may be slightly different and there is a risk of scarring if used improperly. Dr. Baum recommends doing a patch test before treating an entire area, but be mindful to only treat below your cheek line. If you’re not careful, you may see side effects, such as redness, skin discoloration, burning, and scarring.

One additional note before you start: “It's a good idea to talk to a doctor who specializes in dermatology prior to undertaking any home treatment approaches, particularly for individuals with a history of skin conditions or cancers," says Wizemann. "This precautionary measure should ensure your skin stays healthy.”

How to use an IPL hair removal device

"

When using any IPL device, start with shaving before treatment (never wax, as that will fully remove the hair that the light targets). Dr. Baum also recommends avoiding sun exposure before and after treatment due to higher skin sensitivities.

Above all, always follow the product instructions with care, as each device works differently. With some devices, it is recommended to only treat once a week; for others, it might be twice a week. Be sure to do a patch test on a small area of skin to check for irritation or reactions before using it on larger areas.

Where can IPL hair removal devices be used?

double line break

As a general rule, "IPL devices can be used on facial hair below the cheekbones and on arms, underarms, legs, and the bikini line," explains Butler, who extensively vetted the recommendations in this roundup. "They should not be used on the eyebrows, nipples, genitals, around the anus or over tattoos, moles, or any dark spot on the skin." Most manuals also warn against using the devices over areas that have been injected with fillers or neurotoxins. "Be sure to read the manual to see all the warnings and instructions for your device before using," advises Butler.

Can you use IPL on intimate areas?

double line break

"Most IPL devices I have reviewed advise against using them on the genitals and only advise use on the bikini line," says Butler. "However, the instruction manual of the Braun Skin i Expert is the first one I’ve seen that actually has instructions for how to use it in the pubic area for females only, which I believe to be an advantage of this product."

Butler notes that IPL hair removal devices can’t be used on every single place where pubic hair may be, as "it’s not advisable to use these on very sensitive areas like the labia minora or the anus." Skin is generally darker in those areas, so there is an increased risk of burns.

How long does it take for IPL hair removal to work?

line beak

It depends on your skin type and hair color as well as the level of light intensity you use, but typically, you should see results after four weeks. Some users may even see results after one treatment session. After six to eight weeks, your hair should be almost completely gone, and you should only need a touch-up once per month.
