Korean skincare always seems to be light years ahead of what is available in the U.S., and that goes for face masks too. Luckily, you no longer have to book a flight to haul the best Korean face masks—because these days, many are easy to snag online at bigger retailers.

“Korean beauty face masks are known for being ingredient-forward, technology-driven, and user-friendly,” says Anna Karp, DO, a board-certified dermatologist and Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at NYU School of Medicine. "They often incorporate cutting-edge materials (like hydrogel or bio-cellulose), novel delivery systems, and high concentrations of active ingredients—while still being gentle enough for frequent use." Innovation in K-beauty moves quickly, so trends like fermented ingredients, probiotic skincare, and skin-barrier science often appear there first.

“Korean masks integrate K-beauty skincare practices with innovative delivery systems, particularly in sheet mask materials and fabrics,” adds GH Beauty Lab Director Sabina Wizemann. “The country’s innovations in this category also made masks a part of the daily routine, not just for occasional or special event use. They offer a variety of targeted benefits, such as hydration, brightening, firming, cleansing, and pore-minimizing.”

sungboon editor deep collagen power boosting overnight sheet mask

Pros

  • Right shape and size for the face
  • Didn’t interfere with skincare or makeup application afterwards
  • Left skin feeling moisturized
  • Didn’t leave an unpleasant residue on skin

Cons

  • Should be left on for 3+ hours or overnight for best results

Earning rave reviews in GH Beauty Lab testing, it received a perfect score for being the right shape and size, not leaving an unpleasant residue, not interfering with skincare or makeup application afterwards, and hydrating skin. It also left skin brighter and calmer. However, the mask is a time commitment: It can be used for 30-40 minutes for a quick run, but ideally it should be left on for 3+ hours or overnight for the best results.

“Love this mask!” a tester said. “It is so easy to use, refreshing, relaxing, hydrating, and brings so much moisture to my face. This was my first time sleeping overnight with a face mask on and it was surprisingly easy. The mask did not move or bother me during the night, allowing me to enjoy all the benefits of it. My skin was super hydrated the next morning and I felt great.”

PDRN Pink Caffeine Night Wrapping Mask

Pros

  • Hydrates
  • Firms
  • Minimizes puffiness

Cons

  • Best applied with silicone brush; not included

Get your beauty sleep with this overnight mask that Dr. Karp recommends. It should be applied as the last step of your skincare routine, after toner and moisturizer. It’s best applied with a silicone brush (which isn’t included), then let it dry for 15 minutes before hitting the pillow.

Dr. Karp explains it as an “overnight wrap with PDRN and caffeine to reduce puffiness and enhance radiance while you sleep.” The formula is designed to support skin structure, improve texture, reduce puffiness with caffeine, and plump and hydrate with glycerin and hyaluronic acid.

Editor's note: PDRN, or polydeoxyribonucleotide, is a mixture of short DNA fragments that are most commonly derived from salmon but can be synthetically produced. Smaller cosmetic studies have shown improvements in texture and elasticity when applied topically.

First Care Activating Sheet Mask

Pros

  • Hero ingredient is the brand's First Care Activating Serum VI
  • Plumps and hydrates
  • Leaves a glow

Cons

  • Expensive

As a frequent flier, my skin often suffers for it, which is why I always keep these masks in my suitcase. Nothing revives my skin more post-flight than these little guys, which only take 15-20 minutes to bring my complexion back to life. My dry, tired skin get an instant boost of hydration and radiance, and that uncomfortable tightness melts away. The hero ingredient is the brand’s famous First Care Activating Serum VI, which contains the ancient anti-inflammatory ingredient ginseng. Sure, the mask is a splurge, but I think it’s a worthy one.

Bio Collagen Real Deep Mask

Pros

  • Deeply hydrating
  • Minimizes appearance of pores
  • Boosts elasticity

Cons

  • Takes 3+ hours or ideally overnight

Thirsty skin will drink this deeply hydrating mask right up. It taps an ultra-low molecular collagen that goes deeper into the skin for better absorption to visibly tighten pores, improve elasticity, and smooth fine lines and wrinkles. It also contains niacinamide and galactomyces ferment filtrate to tackle uneven skin tone and texture. Note that it should be worn a minimum of 3 to 4 hours, or ideally overnight. “Love this hydrogel mask that is intensely hydrating,” Dr. Karp says. “It is great for regular use and post-procedure skin.”

Cryo Rubber Brightening Mask With Niacinamide

Pros

  • Innovative rubber formula has cooling effect
  • Mask fits face well
  • Great for brightening

Cons

  • 2-step treatment takes a little extra work

Korea is famous for its beauty products with innovative textures, like this rubber mask that cools the skin’s temperature for a cryogenic effect. The 2-step mask treatment is worth the extra work. First, after cleansing and toner, apply the serum ampoule with niacinamides and peptides all over the face. Next, remove the film from the mask and apply the top first and then the bottom, leaving it on for 20 minutes. Massage the remaining serum into the skin to maximize the perks.

GH Beauty Lab Senior Chemist Danusia Wnek isn't usually a fan of face masks as she finds them messy to use, but she likes this one. “It wasn’t a paper-like sheet but rather a more of a gel rubber-like texture,” she says. “I also loved that I could control how much serum is paired with this because you apply the serum first before applying the mask. The mask fit pretty well, it didn’t move, and wasn’t messy. All wins for me. Once I took the mask off after the recommended time, my skin felt so smooth and moisturized! I still had some of the serum left so I used it on its own the next day.”

Aqua Blue Hydration Mask

Pros

  • Delivers deep moisture
  • Soothes sensitive skin
  • Reduces puffiness

Cons

  • Some reviewers said mask was too large

The sheet mask’s pretty blue hue comes naturally from azulene, which helps soothe irritated skin, making this hydrating pick great for sensitive skin. It moisturizes with bambusa bulgaris water-H that is rich in amino acids. It also contains jojoba seed oil to improve elasticity and even out texture. Dr. Karp explains it as “another hydrogel hydration-focused sheet mask which is great for soothing sensitive skin.” Note that some reviewers said the mask was too large for their face.

Pore+Dark Spot Brightening Cream Mask

Pros

  • Helps minimize appearance of dark spots and evens tone
  • Creamy formula is hydrating

Cons

  • Might feel too sticky

Think of this as a face cream in sheet mask form—instead of the typical serum texture that’s water-based, it’s cream-infused for maximum impact. It has a special coating to help stay put, though one reviewer complained it was sticky. The triple threat of niacinamide, tranexamic acid, and melazero V2 works to improve the appearance of dark spots, enlarged pores, and uneven skin tone, leaving skin more radiant.

“I was honestly blown away by this mask!” an Amazon reviewer shared. “The Celimax Pore + Dark Spot Brightening Cream Mask is one of the best sheet masks I’ve ever tried. The cream texture is rich but not heavy, and it doesn’t drip at all. It stays perfectly in place while deeply hydrating my skin. After removing it, my skin looked brighter, calmer, and sooo glowy. I loved how soft and refreshed my face felt!”

Sealing in Moisture Mask

Pros

  • Only takes 15 minutes
  • Cream-based formula for extra hydration

Cons

  • Pricey

Tight on time? This mask only takes 15 minutes to help hydrate, brighten, and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Despite the cream-based formula, the two-piece design hugs the face just right to prevent sliding. It has a unique three-layer design for efficacy with an inner layer to fits the face, a breathable middle layer, and an outer layer that locks in moisture. However, at over $10 per mask, it’s on the pricey side.

“I absolutely love this mask!” an Amazon reviewer shared. “What makes it so unique is the design—the outer layer stays completely dry while the inside is packed with amazing moisture. I’m a total efficiency freak who loves multitasking, and this mask fits perfectly into my lifestyle. I could get ready in the morning without worrying about sticky, dripping sheet masks getting my hair wet, and I was even able to move around the house doing chores while taking care of my skin.”

Water Sleeping Mask

Pros

  • Light texture
  • Cooling effect
  • Fights dullness and dryness

Cons

  • Some reviewers don’t like the scent

When my skin feels like the Sahara, I swap out my regular moisturizer for this gel-cream overnight mask and wake up to happy, hydrated skin. Despite that it deeply hydrates, the texture is impressively light and fluffy, plus it has a cooling effect. It’s formulated with a blend of three types of hyaluronic acid to hydrate and lock in moisture, plus probiotics to strengthen the skin barrier and boost radiance. Finally, squalane and niacinamide in the formula help brighten. While I find the light scent pleasing, some reviewers wish it didn’t have any fragrance.

Pros

  • Strengthens skin barrier

Cons

  • Hard to sleep in for some

All that glitters is gold—like this sheet mask and your skin after using it. “An overnight gel mask designed to firm, hydrate, and brighten skin, it shifts from a beige to a luminous gold as it absorbs,” Dr. Karp says. “It features 24K colloidal gold, 31 peptides, and silk protein water, targeting wrinkles and improving skin elasticity.” Designed to be left on overnight, it strengthens the skin barrier and hydrates for up to 72 hours, leaving skin absolutely glowing for that coveted glass skin effect. Just note that some reviewers complained it didn’t stay put all night.

How we chose the best Korean face masks

linebreak

Our best overall pick from Sungboon Editor was a strong performer in GH Beauty Lab testing, earning high marks from Lab evaluations and consumer testers. While the remaining products were not part of a formal Lab test, we selected them based on Beauty Lab expertise, dermatologist and editor recommendations, and analysis of retailer reviews. We also reviewed ingredient lists and considered feedback on comfort and visible results.

What to look for when shopping for a Korean face mask

linebreak

Dr. Karp suggests keeping the following factors in mind:

✔️ Humectants: These include glycerin and hyaluronic acid, which will help skin hydrated.

✔️ Barrier support: This is key to healthy skin. Look for ingredients like ceramides and panthenol.

✔️ Soothing agents: Centella asiatica and allantoin can help calm sensitive skin.

“Avoid high fragrance products, essential oils, and alcohol if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin,” Dr. Karp adds.

What are the benefits of Korean beauty face masks?

linebreak

“The main benefits include intense hydration, improved skin barrier function, soothing inflammation, temporary plumping and glow, and enhanced penetration of active ingredients,” Dr. Karp says. “They’re especially helpful for quick skin ‘resets’ before events, after travel, or when the skin is stressed.”

Wizemann adds that K-beauty sheet masks are designed to stay in place thanks to maximum contact with skin and improvement of product delivery. “Also, they offer quick hydration, which boosts skin plumpness. Additionally, they are mostly more affordable and can be found in supermarkets, drugstores, and specialty retailers.”

What are the different types of Korean beauty face masks?

linebreak

Sheet masks are the most famous K-beauty mask type, but there are various types. Dr. Karp breaks them the most common ones:

  • Sheet masks: Pre-soaked, single-use masks for hydration and brightening.
  • Rinse-off masks: Clay, cream, or gel textures that are washed off.
  • Sleeping masks (overnight masks): Occlusive treatments that seal in moisture while you sleep.
  • Hydrogel masks: Gel-based masks that adhere closely and deliver actives more efficiently.
  • Bubbling/oxygen masks: Foam up on contact with skin but less efficacious.

What is the best way to apply a Korean beauty face mask?

linebreak

Be sure to follow the instructions on the packaging. “Always apply to clean, slightly damp skin,” Dr. Karp says. “After removing the mask, gently press the remaining serum into the skin—don’t wash it off unless directed. Follow with moisturizer to lock everything in.”

Never leave the mask on longer than the instructions advise, since Dr. Karp cautions that can actually dehydrate the skin. Additionally, she says you can't expect permanent results from one use.

“Face masks are best thought of as boosters,” Dr. Karp says. “They can dramatically improve how your skin looks and feels in the short-term—but long-term results come from consistent daily skincare including but not limited to cleansing, sunscreen, and moisturizing.”
