When I want a no-makeup makeup look—and the weightlessness that comes with it—I opt for a tinted moisturizer, a hybrid between a lightweight foundation and a face cream. That means it delivers hydration with sheer, skin-evening coverage. Best of all, there's one out there for every skin type and need. (I'm partial to the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Blurred Matte for my oily skin.)

Our top picks

In addition to Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab testing, we also wore the tinted moisturizers ourselves, noting which ones went on easily (read: no pilling), blurred pores, and held up all day against sweat and oil. We also took scent and texture into account to find the ones that feel as good on skin as they look.

Pros

  • Contains skin-loving ingredients like squalane and hyaluronic acid
  • Applies evenly and easily to skin

Cons

  • Can be drying on skin

BareMinerals' tinted moisturizer is not only a Beauty Lab expert favorite, but it's also a GH Beauty Award winner. Boosted with skincare ingredients like squalane and hyaluronic acid, it provides sheer coverage that feels more like moisturizer than makeup. "It gave skin a natural glow," Wnek says. In Lab evaluations, the formula rated highest for applying evenly and blending effortlessly. It also performed well at leaving skin smooth and evening its tone. Note that some online reviewers find it a bit drying on the skin.

Pros

  • Gives medium coverage with a natural finish
  • Feels lightweight and non-cakey on skin

Cons

  • Might not be the best for very sensitive skin

When we think of skin tints, we often think of super sheer, light coverage. However, this formula from Maybelline acts more like a foundation, with strong staying power and medium coverage. A tester shared that it "stays put all day and makes my skin look glowy, even and natural, all while covering up blemishes." She has replaced foundation with this product for more lightweight, non-cakey coverage. Some online reviewers say this makes their skin break out, so if you have super sensitive skin, it may not be the best pick.

Pros

  • Contains SPF 50
  • Leaves a radiant glow
  • Buildable coverage

Cons

  • May not be ideal for dry skin

Taking sun protection seriously, the lightweight, buildable formula is infused with mineral SPF 50 and is water-resistant. Named by our experts as one of the best drugstore foundations, the skin tint was a hit in Beauty Lab testing. “Some products say they’re ‘glowy,’ but this really lived up to its promise,” a tester said. “It spreads easily, makes my face look and feel hydrated and evened out. It layers nicely with other makeup.” However, it may not be ideal for dry skin because it can cling to dry patches, according to one tester.

Pros

  • Hydrating formula
  • Doesn’t irritate skin
  • Evens out skin tone

Cons

  • Glow can be too subtle

Despite being a tinted moisturizer, testers were impressed with how well this evened out their skin, even masking rosacea for one person. It also earned top scores for not causing irritation, hydrating skin well, and not oxidizing during the day. “I really loved that the applicator is super precise, meaning I could place the product wherever I wanted,” a tester said. “I found it easy to apply, and buildable to a point (light to medium coverage). I think this is great for everyday wear, and it lasted for hours on my skin.” Another tester shared that “the glow is subtle,” so it may not be right if you’re looking for a radiant finish.

Simply Ageless Skin Perfector Essence Foundation

Pros

  • Infused with skincare ingredients
  • Light, serum-esque formula
  • Natural finish

Cons

  • Coverage may not be heavy enough for some

Infused with skin-loving ingredients, the formula features 0.5% bakuchiol, a plant-based retinol alternative safe for sensitive skin, as well as tranexamic acid to help minimize the appearance of dark spots. The serum-like formula goes on sheer and has a natural finish, though some testers said they would have liked more coverage. “This is such a watery formula, almost like a serum,” a tester said. “It applies really nicely, with enough playtime to blend out into skin. Light coverage with a natural, satin finish like my skin but better. I noticed a little bit of pore blurring, which I really liked.”

Pros

  • Easy to apply
  • Leaves skin feeling soft and silky, sans irritation
  • Gives a natural, glowy finish

Cons

  • May work better as a skin tint than a concealer

Looking for light coverage and concealer in one? This double-duty formula from Keys Soulcare impressed testers in Beauty Lab evaluations. The GH Beauty Award winner rated best for ease of application, leaving skin feeling silky, not irritating, and not changing color during the day, all important aspects for a product for mature skin (and any skin type!). Testers lauded its "natural-looking," "glowy" finish. Some online reviewers, though, find the consistency difficult to use as a concealer.

Pros

  • Budget friendly
  • Gives a skin-like finish

Cons

  • Dropper can be messy to dispense

Made with hyaluronic acid to boost hydration and radiance, this affordable, lightweight tinted serum is ideal for dry skin. It offers a sheer, skin-like finish, according to GH Institute Data and Product Operations Manager Nikolas Greenwald. He likes to apply it with a slightly fluffy foundation brush. "I find that it doesn't pill or get cakey even when powdering on top," he says. Online reviewers wish the bottle came with a pump top rather than a dropper to make it easier to get product out.

Positive Light Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20

Pros

  • Makes skin appear brighter
  • Pigmented formula hides skin imperfections

Cons

  • Can oxidize slightly

Though still lightweight and breathable, we love that Rare Beauty's tinted moisturizer offers a pigmented formula that covers blemishes, redness, and more. One tester found it hydrating for her sensitive skin and easy to color-match, thanks to its multiple shade offerings. "It gives a surprising amount of coverage and leaves my skin looking brighter," she said. Some find that it oxidizes on skin by the end of the day.

It contains SPF 20; however, the American Academy of Dermatology and the GH Beauty Lab recommend at least SPF 30, so make sure to apply an additional sunscreen with this one.

Pros

  • Lightweight and hydrating on skin
  • Light, dewy coverage

Cons

  • Can make skin look oily

For light, hydrating coverage, turn to Hourglass' skin tint. It feels extremely lightweight and delivers a dewy glow. One tester loves wearing it in the winter when her skin is dry and needs a more hydrating base. "It never looks cakey and doesn't settle into lines, even in the dead of winter when my skin is dry and dehydrated," she said. However, it can make her skin look a little oily, so she sets it with powder; this may be too dewy a formula for those with oily skin.

Beauty Balm Serum Boosted Skin Tint

Pros

  • Blends effortlessly
  • Quick and easy to apply
  • Buttery smooth formula

Cons

  • May need to apply powder on top to avoid skin looking more texturized

Applying tinted moisturizer has never been easier, thanks to this balm format from Anastasia Beverly Hills. Simply swipe the creamy formula all over your face and blend for a light, dewy finish. "It feels like butter on my skin," a tester shared. "It blends like a dream and gives the perfect 'no makeup' look. I like to pair it with an undereye brightener for a light makeup day." It can make skin look greasy and settle into pores, though, so try setting it with powder to help.

Tinted Moisturizer Oil Free Blurred Matte SPF 30

Pros

  • Mattifying formula
  • Lightweight
  • Contains SPF

Cons

  • May start to separate

Beloved by professional makeup artists, this tinted moisturizer from Laura Mercier is also one of Wnek's favorites for her oily skin. "It is by far the best tinted moisturizer I have ever used in my life," she raves. "It doesn't feel like I have anything on." The mattifying formula is armed with oil-absorbing powders to keep shine away as well. Note that some reviewers said the formula may start to separate after a while.

Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 Foundation

Pros

  • Can be used on dry, sensitive skin types
  • Doesn't feel heavy on skin

Cons

  • Smell can be off-putting to some

A bit more pigmented than many other skin tints, Ilia's famed serum offers coverage without the heavy feel. Its creamy consistency is easy to apply with the dropper, and it is offered in a wide range of shades. "The formula's blend of niacinamide, squalane, and hyaluronic acid is very much welcomed by my sensitive skin—turns out, you can find a good coverage tinted moisturizer that won't irritate skin," one tester said. Some do find the product to have an off-putting, chemical-like smell.

Slip Tint Tinted Moisturizer SPF 35
SephoraAlso Consider
Credit: SAIE

Pros

  • Helps even skin tone
  • Lightweight, sheer finish

Cons

  • Less ideal for oily skin types

For a true "no makeup" makeup look, smooth on Saie's tinted moisturizer, made with mineral sunscreen. "I like the sheerness of this tint, its lightness, and how glowy it made my skin look," one tester remarked. "It evens tone and blurs imperfections." Ideal for drier skin, this formula uses grapeseed oil, hyaluronic acid, and SPF to keep skin moisturized and protected, plus adds a dewy finish. It can look a bit too greasy on oilier skin types, though.

4-In-1 Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20

Pros

  • Smooths fine lines and wrinkles
  • Formulated with skin-soothing ingredients
  • Makeup artist-recommended

Cons

  • Low level of SPF
  • May be too shimmery for some

Greenberg highly recommends this tinted moisturizer. "It's made with soothing chamomile and shea butter, conditioning aloe, and vitamin E, plus it claims to be vegan and cruelty-free," she says. It also contains retinol, which is great for treating fine lines and wrinkles. Good to know: It has a shimmery finish that some online reviewers say is overly glittery, and it only has SPF 20.

Pros

  • Highly radiant finish
  • Can be worn under makeup or on its own

Cons

  • Low level of SPF

A GH editor favorite, Smashbox's tinted moisturizer with SPF instantly gives skin "a noticeable dewy glow," GH Senior Beauty & Style Director April Franzino says. Plus, it subtly yet efficiently evens skin tone with its well-pigmented, medium-coverage formula, yet still boasts a light texture. The tint is also made to work as a primer (and Smashbox is lauded for its top-performing primers), so you can wear it on its own or under makeup. It has SPF 25, so make sure to wear another sunscreen underneath.

How we choose the best tinted moisturizers

double line break

The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab has a long history of testing makeup and skincare products, including sunscreens, face moisturizers, and foundations, both in our Lab using state-of-the-art equipment and with at-home consumer testers, for factors like ease of application and skin-enhancing effects. Through this work, our scientists have experience evaluating formulas and consider factors such as coverage, hydration, blendability, skin feel, and wear when assessing tinted moisturizers.

Rather than conducting a single dedicated Beauty Lab test of tinted moisturizers, we based our recommendations on relevant Beauty Lab testing and expertise, previous GH Beauty Award winners, and editors’ favorites from hands-on use.

What to look for when shopping for a tinted moisturizer

two double lines

✔️ People with dry, sensitive, or mature skin should look for a tinted moisturizer packed with emollients, moisturizers, and humectants.

✔️ Those with combination, oily, or acne-prone skin should look for lightweight formulas that offer non-greasy hydration. Thicker formulas can be cakey and feel heavy on skin, which isn't ideal.

✔️ Though some tinted moisturizers are sold in just one shade, many now offer multiple shade options. Make sure to choose one that best matches your skin tone, as some can look too orange on certain skin tones.

Is tinted moisturizer good for everyday use?

double line break

Yes, you can use tinted moisturizer every day. Greenberg actually finds it perfect for daily use because it's lightweight, offers skin-perfecting coverage, and usually features SPF 30 or higher, helping protect skin. But take note: Though tinted moisturizers often contain SPF, they should not be relied on solely for adequate sun protection (because most of us don't apply enough!). The GH Beauty Lab encourages using face sunscreen daily, even when using tinted moisturizer.

What's the difference between tinted moisturizer and foundation?

two double lines

Tinted moisturizers are not as pigment-packed as traditional foundations, since their primary function is to provide adequate, lasting hydration to the skin, whereas foundations typically are designed for cosmetic purposes.

Compared with foundation, tinted moisturizers generally contain more emollients and moisturizing ingredients and less pigment. That means you shouldn't expect the same full coverage as you might with a foundation.

How to apply tinted moisturizer

double line break

According to Greenberg, tinted moisturizer is pretty “goof-proof” thanks to its light coverage, so you can just use your fingers to apply it like a typical moisturizer. “Or if you don’t like to get messy, you can buff it on with a [makeup] brush—it’s hard to mess up!”
