After years of testing skin care products at the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab, our experts are often asked: “What’s the best anti-aging product you’ve tested?” Our answer tends to surprise people: sunscreen. When used daily, a broad-spectrum sunscreen not only protects against skin cancer but also helps prevent visible signs of aging caused by UV exposure, such as wrinkles and dark spots.
The best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually want to wear every day. Factors like texture, absorption, and if it leaves a white cast play a big part in how consistently you use it. With so many formulas on the market (we received 256 of the newest launch submissions this year alone), knowing which one to choose can feel overwhelming. We’ve made it our mission to cut through all the options and help you find your favorite.
Our top picks:
- Best Body Sunscreen: Mary Kay Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50
- Best Value Body Sunscreen: Sun Bum Original Sunscreen Spray SPF 50
- Best Face Sunscreen: Sofie Pavitt Face Screentime Non-Comedogenic Hydrating Sunscreen SPF 30
- Best Spray Sunscreen: Dermatone Sport Sunscreen Spray SPF 50
To do that, the GH Beauty Lab scientists have evaluated over a thousand chemical and mineral body and face sunscreens over the past decade to identify the best on the market. In our latest study, we tested 92 formulas with the help of 766 testers across the nation with various skin-types and skin tones. Testers used their product over the summer and provided their feedback on application, texture, absorption, and how well it blended into skin without leaving a white cast. Ahead, the Beauty Lab shares the best-tested sunscreens for all skin types, from oily to dry and preferences like mineral or chemical.
GH Beauty Lab note: None of the sunscreens recommended in this story contain the active ingredients octinoxate or oxybenzone, which are currently banned in Hawaii.
