In the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, we evaluate swimsuits from popular brands to see how they'll really perform once you hit the beach or pool, assessing the fabric to see if it'll bag out over time and if it's durable enough to withstand saltwater, sun, and repeated washing. We also rely on consumer testers for honest feedback on fit, feel, and how the suits hold up in real life.
Ahead, the best swimsuits for women over 50 that strike that balance between great coverage, strong performance, and styles that still feel current.
Pros
Slims up to 1 inch, in tests
Flattering neckline with plenty of support
Wide range of sizes
Cons
May feel a bit snug because of compression
Miraclesuit is known for its slimming designs made with smoothing fabrics and waist-accentuating details, and the Oceanus swimsuit is our top-tested favorite. The plunging neckline draws the eyes downward to the waist where ruching and wrapped fabric create an hourglass effect.
Because of the compressive materials used, this style may feel a bit snug, but that just means it's working. Consumer testers rated this one-piece as having more slimming power than other styles we tested, and they emphasized that it minimized their midsections. When we measured testers' waistlines before wearing the swimsuit and with it on, we noticed more than an inch of difference for some testers.
While the neckline is lower than some other styles, testers loved that it still offers plenty of support and lift, thanks to the built-in underwire and adjustable straps. Miraclesuit carries the Oceanus in plus-sizes, DD-cup sizes, and a range of colors and patterns.

Pros
Comfortable fit that doesn't dig
Ruched, belted design is slimming
Scored high in washability tests
Cons
Not much coverage in the bum
Our testers gave this high-neck one-piece from Tempt Me high scores across the board for its comfortable feel, and they said the legs didn't feel tight or dig into their hips or thighs.
Combining smoothing material with a ruched design and belted detail, the swimsuit highlights the waistline. The high neckline is paired with a deep mesh cut-out, showing just a peek of skin without being overly revealing.
Our testers appreciated the "sexy" yet completely wearable look, though some note it doesn't have a full-coverage bum. One GH analyst who has worn a swimsuit from Tempt Me for several years shared that it has held up well without noticeable stretching or fading, and this style earned high marks in our Textiles Lab washability tests.

Pros
Added front panel for more coverage
Inner Power Mesh material smooths
Sewn-in cups for shape and support
Cons
Not available in sizes smaller than 8
With hundreds of swimsuits available from size 4 to size 34 (this one starts at size 8), Swimsuits For All offers an inclusive selection of styles in tons of colorful prints and patterns. This Sarong Front Swimsuit is a traditional one-piece with an added panel of material in the front for more coverage.
It drapes over the stomach and grazes the hips in the front, while an inner Power Mesh fabric smooths and shapes underneath. For extra chest support and lift, there's an elastic under band and sewn-in soft cups. The bottoms offer full coverage.
Our testers who have tried swimwear from the brand said they felt confident and comfortable in the styles, but they recommended sizing up for the best fit, because they found the swimsuits to run small.

Pros
Light smoothing and shaping
Built-in shelf bra
Customizable bottoms
Cons
Straps are thinner and may dig in
The Amalfi swimsuit from Andie is so chic with its iconic maillot design—I like to think of it as the little black dress of bathing suits. It's made of a slightly compressive material for light smoothing and shaping, and there's a built-in shelf bra and removable cups to customize the amount of coverage up top. While the straps are on the thinner side (which means they may dig into your shoulders,) they are adjustable and can be loosened or tightened based on your body type.
The bottoms are customizable too, with the brand offering options for full, medium, or cheeky coverage. And if you're tall, you can also opt for a long torso style. The swimsuit is a favorite of GH editors and analysts who love the classic style.

Pros
Earned high marks for style in tests
Highly compressive and slimming
Has nice stretch and recovery
Cons
Fits a bit snug
In a round of Textiles Lab swimsuit evaluations, this Lands’ End style snagged top marks for being the "most flattering" style, according to our consumer testers. It earned the highest scores for its good looks. The crisscross shirring detail is not only stylish, but it also slims the torso for an hourglass look. The material itself is highly compressive, according to Lands' End, so it smooths over your curves. We recommend sizing up if you prefer a fit that's less snug.
It felt substantial during Textiles Lab evaluations and had nice stretch but retained its shape. I also love the bold ombre style, which is brighter up top and darker towards the bottom, creating the illusion of smaller hips and waistline. But there are other neutral color options available if you prefer a more toned-down look, along with extended size options including plus and petite.

Pros
Less clingy fit through the midsection
Wide, adjustable straps won't dig in
Sewn-in bra for support
Cons
Can't choose separate sizes for top and bottom
A tankini combines a pair of traditional bikini bottoms with a longer, full-coverage top. This one from Yonique, which comes as a two-piece set in more than 20 colors, has a blouson-style top with ruching at the neckline, along with a fitted waistband, but the fabric throughout the bodice is flowy for a more concealing, less clingy fit. Although on the conservative side, the design still feels stylish.
The design offers great support, even for larger-chested women, thanks to wide, adjustable straps and a sewn-in bra. Because you're unable to choose two separate sizes for the top and bottom, we recommend sizing up if needed.

Pros
Built-in briefs
Slimming princess seams
Wide, adjustable straps
Cons
Only solid color is black
Swim dresses like this one from Swimsuits for All are a great option for full-coverage swimwear that's still feminine. There's an outer panel of fabric that flares out like a skirt, but underneath, there are built-in briefs, so you're free to swim without worry. This particular style has princess seams, which are two vertical seams that run down the torso of the dress to emphasize an hourglass shape.
With wide, adjustable straps and a Power Mesh shelf bra with built-in foam cups, the swim dress is designed with chest support in mind. We also like that it comes in plenty of pretty patterns, including the featured butterflies, florals, and polka dots. The only solid color offered is black.

Pros
Slimming diagonal-striped design
Inclusive sizing
Full-coverage bottoms
Cons
Doesn't have a built-in bra
A favorite among GH editors and analysts, Summersalt's Sidestroke swimsuit is a size-inclusive option that looks great on women of all ages and sizes. It comes in sizes 0 to 24, and there are long torso options for a better fit. It has a chic one-shoulder design with diagonal stripes and seams that draw the eye across the body rather than side-to-side or up-and-down—inherently slimming.
The bottoms are fuller coverage for a more modest look. For an added layer of coverage, Summersalt also offers matching swim skirts and coverups that look great on the beach but are put together enough to transition to grab a bite to eat.
While the swimsuit doesn't have a built-in bra or removable cups for chest support, it is double-lined and made of a compressive material that our larger-chested testers still felt supported in. One tester shared, "The material smooths my stomach and back, but doesn't cut into my legs or shoulders. I can comfortably wear it all day while lounging, swimming, or running around on the beach."

Pros
Stays securely in place during activity
Fully lined for no show through
Compressive, smoothing material
Wide, criss-cross straps for support
Cons
No cups or built-in bra
Runs tight
Speedo has been around for decades and is a go-to for athletes and recreational swimmers alike. Whether you're powering through laps or taking a leisurely dip, if you want a swimsuit that stays in place, this bathing suit won't budge. It has wide straps that cross in the back so they won’t fall off your shoulders as you swim. There are no cups or built-in bras for modesty, but it is completely lined and made of a highly compressive material that smooths over your curves.
When I reviewed the swimsuit in the Lab, I was impressed by the quality, and a tester who tried this style said it "kept everything in place while still feeling comfortable and not too restrictive."
Keep in mind that it's designed for competitive swimmers, so it runs tight, and it follows a unique size chart. I recommend reviewing the brand's size guide before buying to ensure you have the best possible fit.

Pros
Thick straps and a built-in bra for support
Full-coverage bottoms
Inclusive sizing
Cons
Straps can't be adjusted
An array of surprisingly sophisticated patterns like the featured graphic floral elevates the simple silhouette of this L.L.Bean swimsuit, ensuring it'll stand out on the beach or at the pool.
With thick straps, a criss-cross back, and a built-in bra with soft cups, the swimsuit offers solid chest support, even though the straps can't be adjusted, and the neckline scoops towards the chest without showing too much. The bottoms hit lower on the hips and provide full coverage in the back, preventing you from having to tug and readjust your swimsuit while having fun in the sun. It comes in a broad size range, from 2 to 18 with plus, petite, and long torso options for those who need extended sizing.

Pros
Wide, adjustable straps that stay put
Removable soft cups
Flattering square neckline
Cons
Care instructions are a bit more complex
Anyone can wear a bikini, but not everyone wants a barely-there, super strappy style. If you're looking for one with a little more coverage, consider this flattering square neck pick from Andie Swim. The wide-set, thick straps prevent slippage and they can be adjusted for a more secure fit. The removable soft cups provide a smooth look.
You can pair it with the brand's matching full coverage high-waisted bikini bottoms for a coordinating set, or match it with a pair of bottoms that you already own. It's worth noting the care instructions on this suit. Like many bathing suits, hand-washing is recommended, but the brand also recommends pre-rinsing it in fresh water before swimming in a pool or ocean.

Pros
Built-in underwire
Available in bra sizing
Textured material is smoothing
Convertible straps
Cons
Neckline may not offer enough coverage for some
Sometimes a shelf bra and soft cups just don't cut it, especially if you have a larger chest size. This swimsuit from Freya has a built-in underwire and is available in bra sizing, so you're able to choose the band and cup size you typically wear—from 30D to 38G. The brand's swimsuits are designed comparably to their bras, which have performed well in our Textiles Lab tests with high scores for fit and comfort.
The material is textured, which is trendy for the summer and acts as camouflage for any bumps and rolls you might want to hide, and it's fully lined to smooth your stomach and back. One tester with a 34G bra size shared that hers "[was] very supportive and held everything perfectly in place." I love that the straps are convertible, meaning you're able to wear them as is or adjust them to cross in the back for some added lift and chest support. The neckline is a lower scoop neck than most of the styles featured, though, so it’s not ideal for those who like more modest coverage.

Pros
Offers more coverage
Flattering design
Light padding
Cons
Petite sizes unavailable
Boden's swimsuits generally offer more coverage, but the brand keeps things fun with flattering ruching details and bold patterns for a more fashionable beach or pool look. The cups have light padding and the halter style is adjustable for a more comfortable fit. "It holds you in without squeezing you too hard," shared one GH tester whose go-to swimsuits are from Boden.
While polka dots are certainly having a moment, you can choose from a few solid colors if you want something more classic with a subtle retro vibe. Though Boden suits come in extended sizing like petite and long, this suit isn't currently available in petite.

Pros
Removable pads for shape and support
Designed for activity
UPF 50+ fabric
Long-line top and high-rise bottoms offer more coverage
Cons
Straps aren't adjustable
If you want the flexibility of a two-piece swimsuit but don't want to show quite as much skin, this one is designed with a long-line top that covers more than a typical bikini but less than a tankini—pair it with high-rise bottoms for some tummy control. Removable pads offer flexibility in shape and support, even if the wide straps aren't adjustable.
And even though a set retails for nearly $150, we love that the bottoms are reversible so you can switch from print to solid so it's practically two swimsuits in one. The brand also says this UPF 50+ suit is designed to stay in place during activities—great for those who like water sports.

Pros
Smoothing UPF 50+ fabric
No-dig legs, according to the brand
Inclusive sizing
Cons
Can be harder to pull on
Just like with Spanx's popular shapewear, these high-waisted swim bottoms are made with a compressive material to smooth and help create a more defined waistline. They also come in sizes up to 3X. They're snug enough to stay in place all day long, whether you're taking a swim, paddle boarding, or lying on the beach. Plus, the brand claims the leg openings are designed to be "no-dig," so as not to cut in along your bikini line. They are a little harder to shimmy on, thanks to the snug and compressive fit though. One GH tester said they felt a little tight, but that's standard of shaping swimwear.
While Spanx describes the bikini bottoms as moderate, they offer more coverage than many of the swim bottoms we've evaluated from other popular brands. One GH tester who wore a swimsuit from Spanx said she felt "confident" in her swimsuit and was impressed by how comfortable it felt, despite being from a shapewear brand. They also offer UPF 50+ protection.

How we choose the best swimsuits for women over 50

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, we test swimsuits of all kinds, from styles designed for large busts to period swimwear. Our top picks for swimsuits for women over 50 are based on Textiles Lab testing, consumer tester feedback, and editor evaluations of swimsuits from popular brands.
In recent years, I have personally analyzed dozens of swimsuits in the Lab from more than 30 popular swimsuit brands. My team and I evaluate swimsuits for durability by putting them through wash tests to understand how well they hold up to repeated washing and whether or not they shrink in the dryer. To see if swimsuits will become baggy with wear or snagged by the concrete steps of a pool, we measure how well they bounce back after being stretched and their abrasion resistance. We also consider colorfastness to different elements like seawater, chlorine, sweat, and UV rays.
Along with testing in the Textiles Lab, we share swimsuits with consumer testers who try on the styles and wear them on trips to the beach or pool. They share their thoughts on everything from how comfortable the swimsuits are to how well they fit to the overall appearance and style.
