In our Textiles Lab, we evaluate swimsuits to find the ones that live up to their slimming promises. We review the swimwear online, assessing material specifications or slimming claims, before checking some of the styles out in person to evaluate construction. We also share swimsuits with real testers who wear the swimsuits on their trips to the beach or pool and provide feedback about the fit and shaping capabilities. In recent years, we've seen more than 100 swimsuits, many equipped with slimming abilities. If you're on the hunt for a bathing suit good for hiding a tummy, this is a great place to start your search.
When we put slimming swimsuits to the test in the Textiles Lab, this classic swimsuit from Miraclesuit came out on top. In our evaluations, the Oceanus stood up to elements like seawater, chlorine, sweat, UV rays, and more, so you know it will last season after season. The timeless look won't be going out of style anytime soon—helpful justification for the price.
And if basic colors bore you, the brand offers more colors and prints to choose from too on its site. This particular style works best for those with larger chests and cup sizes, but the brand carries a variety of swimsuits in the Oceanus collection, including Plus-size options, standard sizing, and more.
WHAT USERS SAY: It was loved by our consumer testers who said it minimized their tummies and shrunk their waists, and they rated it better than other slimming swimsuits they’ve tried. Testers also appreciated the built-in underwire for bust support, emphasizing that it provided nice lift—not always easy to find in a swimsuit.

One of the hottest swimsuits on Amazon, this one-piece from Tempt Me has thousands of five-star reviews from real shoppers, and it costs a fraction of the price of other popular styles.
WHAT USERS SAY: It wowed both product experts and consumer testers in our evaluations. Every single tester—regardless of age, body type, or style preference—rated it as flattering. They especially liked the ruching that hides tummy bulges and the smoothing mesh in the back that prevents spillage often seen with tight-fitting bathing suits.
Our testers gave it high ratings for feeling comfortable and supportive, but some did share that the leg openings felt a little too tight and wished they were cut higher for a less restrictive feel. When we assessed this suit in the Textiles Lab, the vibrant color didn't bleed, and there were no signs of wear after repeated washing.

Miraclesuit's sculpting style slimmed more than any other suit when we measured wearers in our swimwear tests, making it an instant tester favorite. Besides its super waist-trimming abilities, other highlights include adjustable straps to help you achieve the best fit, underwires for bust support, and draping around the torso to create the look of more defined curves. The brand recommends sizing up if you prefer a less snug fit, but the suit is only available in sizes 10 to 18.
WHAT USERS SAY: The swimsuit is designed with compressive materials that help to shape and trim, and our testers said it had a visually slimming appearance and that they loved wearing it. Because the material is compressive, some of our testers said it can feel a little restrictive, but that's typical of shapewear swimsuits.

Tempt Me has a range of two-piece sets with high waistlines, which provide added coverage and emphasize the waist for a slimming effect. This style in particular is one of the most popular sets.
The halter top uses both a hook closure in the back and two adjustable straps to help you achieve a secure and proper fit. Plus, the molded cups shape the chest for push-up lift. The ruched bottoms provide tummy control and feature a high-leg cut, which creates the appearance of longer legs.
Like other affordable styles on Amazon, this one comes in a lot of colors and prints so there's bound to be one that works for your style. The brand recommends hand-washing the suit to keep it in tip-top shape, so it requires gentler care than other styles.
WHAT USERS SAY: When our testers have worn other swimsuits from TemptMe, they've especially loved the ruched designs to cover the stomach, and they were impressed by the overall quality.

Thanks to a long front panel for fuller coverage, a smoothing power mesh lining over the stomach, subtle shirring on each side, and a v-shaped neckline, this sarong style from Swimsuits for All is designed to accentuate your waist and curves.
We appreciate details like the wide straps, built-in soft cups, and an elastic underband to support the chest, but note that the straps can't be adjusted. You can choose from sizes 8 to 34, which is a more inclusive size range than other swim brands we've evaluated, and there are other variations of the style, including a lace-up version.
WHAT USERS SAY: When GH analysts have worn other styles from Swimsuits for All, they've been impressed by the comfortable shaping materials. One analyst commented that the material feels lightly compressive without being restrictive, and the leg openings didn't dig in, despite offering fuller coverage.
She did add that the swimsuit ran small, and she wished she sized up to prevent some bulging at the chest. It's common for slimming swimsuits to feel tighter than other swimwear, so keep that in mind when choosing your size.

Our testers rated the solid color version of this style the "most flattering" in our tests. This newer ombre tummy control one-piece breaks up the body with lighter colors up top and darker colors at the waist and stomach, creating a visually slimming effect in addition to its actual compression capabilities.
Along with the ombre design, the wrapped bodice emphasizes the waist, smooths the stomach, and shapes the torso. The wide straps aren't adjustable, but they do prevent the swimsuit from digging into the shoulders and offer chest support for older women and those with large busts. Lands' End also carries Petite, Long Torso, Plus, and Long Plus versions of the popular style, as well as options for D, DD, and DDD cups to help you find the right fit.
If you're not a fan of the deep v-neck style, the brand offers other versions of this swimsuit, including some with a traditional maillot neckline or a skirt for added coverage. Lands' End claims the swimsuit is resistant to chlorine and sunscreen, but some online reviewers said the bold colors spot and fade after wearing the swimsuit in chlorinated water regularly.
WHAT USERS SAY: Testers were wowed by just how slimming this swimsuit appeared and loved the flattering look. One tester said she loved the bold and fun ombre color options. Another younger tester said the style looked a little "mature," but she liked the way it shaped her body.

Not only does this affordable one-piece have a ruched midsection to hide bumps and tummy bulges, but it also stands out for its stylish design with a low v-neck and ruffle trim. It comes in over 30 colors and prints too. This swimsuit has removable padded cups for customizable shape and support, and the back is laced, so you can loosen or tighten it for an even better fit.
WHAT USERS SAY: One GH analyst shared that despite having swimsuits more than three times the price in her drawer, she regularly reaches for her Cupshe swimsuit because the style is so flattering. One analyst who tried this ruffle one-piece was impressed by how well it supported her DD-cup chest. "By pulling on the laces in the back just a little, I felt much more secure up top, and it trimmed my waist, as well," she said.
However, when GH editors and analysts have tried swimsuits from Cupshe, we've generally found that the material is thinner and less durable than swimsuits from other brands. This style may not hold up well to wear season after season, but we still think it's a great value option.

Ideal for someone who wants a two-piece style with more tummy coverage, this swim set comes with a long and billowy tankini top and traditional bikini bottoms for under $40. The blouson design features gathering at the neckline, extra fabric throughout the bodice, and a banded hemline to hide the stomach.
WHAT USERS SAY: Several online reviewers loved how the tankini fits their curves and said they felt confident in this swimsuit set. One shared, "It’s incredibly flattering and gives just the right amount of coverage while still feeling stylish and cute. The blouson style is great for concealing the midsection, and the fit is both comfortable and supportive—especially with the built-in bra and adjustable straps."
Unfortunately, you can't choose separate sizing for the top and bottom, and some reviewers said the bottoms run tight compared to the top. It's best to size up if you wear inconsistent sizes on the top and bottom because the top's straps can be adjusted for a more secure fit.

If you prefer to mix and match your two-piece swimsuit—especially if you have a hard time finding sets with the right size on the top and bottom—we think this bikini bottom checks off the boxes for a flattering fit.
It has a high waist for tummy coverage and a fuller coverage back for modesty. The bottoms are made with a targeted compression material, that's meant to smooth the stomach and any unwanted bumps while emphasizing the natural curves of the body. It comes in five colors, including black if you want something more classic. Plus, you can match it to one of the brand's coordinating shaping bikini tops.
WHAT USERS SAY: Spanx is our top-tested brand for shapewear. Our testers say it's comfortable and supportive, while providing the shaping and smoothing effects they're looking for. Plus, everything we've tested from the brand has been high quality.
One GH editor who tried these swim bottoms said they feel a little snug, which is standard of slimming swimwear, but keep that in mind in case you prefer a more relaxed fit.

Summersalt is an online swim brand with a huge following, and its Sidestroke style has sold out dozens of times, thanks to its simple one-shoulder, striped design that looks amazing on all kinds of body types.
Diagonal lines run across the bodice to create a slimming effect, and the fabric is slightly compressive for shaping without feeling tight or restrictive like other shapewear swimsuits. It's available in sizes 0 through 24, and there's a Long Torso option for taller folks. There are also tons of variations of this style, including bright color-blocked options, solid neutrals, and trendy patterns with details like bow shoulders and trendy cut-outs.
WHAT USERS SAY: One analyst who is 6 feet tall says the long style fits perfectly without digging in. The swimsuit doesn't feature any padded cups or lining for modesty or support, but even our analysts with larger bust sizes said the high-quality suit feels secure and stays put. One analyst described it as "perfect for a family trip," sharing that it's cute but still has coverage.

With a traditional sweetheart neckline and a halter tie, this swimsuit has a retro flair. Design details like princess seams running down the bodice and shirred material across the front emphasize an hourglass shape. A built-in bra with removable padded cups and a full lining provides coverage and support.
WHAT USERS SAY: An analyst who is 6-feet tall was skeptical that this swimsuit would fit, given that there's no long torso option. She said that while it didn't dig into her legs, the swimsuit wasn't quite long enough. However, because of the adjustable halter tie, she was able to make it work. We recommend this style more for petite and average height shoppers.
Our analyst was impressed by the lift this swimsuit gave her chest, without an underwire or tons of padding. Some online reviewers have noted inconsistencies in sizing between the different colors and prints. Thanks to Amazon's return policy, you can send most styles and colors back within 30 days if it isn't the right fit.

This swimsuit from Boden is designed with slimming in mind—inside and out. It's fully ruched on the outside to conceal unwanted bulges and lined with Powermesh material inside to sculpt the body. There are lightly padded cups for modesty, and the straps can be pulled tighter or tied more loosely for your best fit, thanks to the halter style.
WHAT USERS SAY: One GH analyst who swears by Boden's swimwear says the brand's halter swimsuits are her go-to for a flattering, slimming look. Another GH staffer said her one-piece from Boden gave her the lift in her chest that she never knew she needed, and it helped her ditch the coverup at the pool.
We always suggest reviewing the brand's size chart to determine the proper size, but Boden does offer returns if you choose the incorrect size, as long as the hygienic strips inside the swimsuit are still intact.

Since its inception in 2020, this brand has gone super viral on social media—namely for its compressive fabric that sculpts the waist. The brand also carries an impressive range of sizes and lengths: Choose Short, Regular/Long, or X-long in sizes XXS to 4X. The brand says the shapewear swimsuit even works for those with chests as large as a K cup.
Up top, there's a built-in shelf bra to lend extra support, as well as removable pads and adjustable straps for a more customized look and fit. For slimming properties, the swimsuit has a lace-up back to really cinch the waist, plus built-in power mesh shaping panels on the sides. This specific pattern has the added benefit of i emphasizing an hourglass look.
WHAT USERS SAY: Like other shapewear swimsuits, this one will feel snug as you put it on, but it should feel more comfortable once it's on. A former GH editor who tried a couple of styles in her regular size said she struggled to get in them.
Another GH analyst who has worn TA3's swimwear said it's best to put the swimsuits on with someone else around who can both help you into the suit and help you tightly tie the laces in the back for a truly waist-cinching effect.

Whether you're swimming laps or taking a leisurely dip, this basic swimsuit from athletic brand Speedo has you covered. Although it's simple in design with no ruching or shaping panels, this suit is fully lined and made from highly compressive material that keeps everything in place.
Straps that criss-cross in the back stay put, so you don't have to worry about them slipping off your shoulders during your swim. The legs have a high cut while the back offers fuller coverage for a traditional athletic swimsuit.
WHAT USERS SAY: The swimsuit is made for competitive swimmers, so the all-over compressive material may feel tight, and the brand and online reviewers recommend sizing up if you prefer a looser feel.
A GH editor who wore Speedo for more than a decade for competitive swim meets and now wears Speedo for recreational swimming said the brand's one-pieces are high quality but run snug. She regularly sizes up from the brand's recommended competitive swim size for a less compressive feel.

Designed to be worn either in the pool or out for a night on the town, this versatile swimsuit from Stylest is stylish and chic. Longer sleeves and a full-coverage back lend modesty and extra protection from the sun, but you can unzip the front of the suit to reveal more skin.
The swimsuit is made with a quality compressive material that sculpts your waist, and you can pair this swimsuit with one of the brand's swim solutions, including water-safe bras and bodysuits, for even more support and shaping.
WHAT USERS SAY: A tester described the swimsuit as "chic" and loved that it felt versatile—able to be worn in and out of the pool comfortably. A Textiles Lab analyst who has tried a swimsuit from Stylest shared that the suits aren't ideal for those with longer torsos. The brand recommends sizing up if you're tall, but our analyst said even after sizing up, the suit was still a bit short because the material doesn't have a ton of give (compression swim usually doesn't).

How we test the best shapewear swimsuits

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, we evaluate all types of swimwear, from swimsuits for large busts to styles for women over 50 to the best options on Amazon. In recent years, we've tried more than 40 styles and have collected more than 1,400 data points for analysis.
When we evaluate swimwear, we measure stretch recovery, or how well the swimsuits maintain their shape after being stretched to a set length for a set amount of time, to ensure your suit won't sag after a few wears. We also consider how well the material will hold up after being rubbed against a rough surface like a concrete pool with the help of our abrasion tester.
We wash swimsuits according to their care labels, noting any shrinkage or major changes in appearance as well. And to understand how well the swimsuit will maintain its color against elements including chlorine, sweat, UV rays, saltwater, and more, we perform colorfastness tests.
In addition to testing in the Lab, we share swimsuits with consumer testers who wear them in real life and provide us with feedback about their experiences, highlighting characteristics like overall comfort, fit, and style. For slimming swimsuits in particular, we've even taken measurements of our testers before and after putting on the swimsuits to see if the compressive styles really slim their waists, hips, and stomachs.
What to look for when shopping for the best tummy control swimsuit

When shopping for a shapewear swimsuit, consider:
✔️ Slimming features: Swimsuits can have built-in shapewear with a compressive feel that physically smooths bulges, or they can use design techniques that create a visually slimming effect without actually feeling restrictive. Some great slimming design elements are ruching, diagonal lines, color-blocking with darker colors on the bottom, princess seam lines, and strategic coverage or cut-outs for a flattering appearance.
✔️ Fit: Everybody is different, and we all have different preferences when it comes to which swimsuit silhouettes look best on us. Trying on swimsuits to find the right fit can feel overwhelming, so here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Chest support: If you have large breasts or are looking for more support, try a suit with built-in underwire or a thick under-bust band for lift. Some suits are only lined, while others come with sewn-in or removable padding for coverage and structure.
- Straps: To avoid pesky tan lines, you can always opt for a strapless suit, but if you want the added security of straps, there are a few different styles: halter tops are adjustable and tie around the neck; spaghetti straps are on the thinner side but provide some support and are typically adjustable; and thicker straps help lift the chest and are less likely to dig into your shoulders.
- Bottoms: High-waisted bottoms can emphasize the waist for a slimming effect, while low-rise bottoms show more skin. There are full-coverage backs that completely cover the butt, or there are high-cut suits that are cheeky but can create the illusion of longer legs. If you want maximum coverage, opt for a swim skirt or dress that covers your bottom, hips, and upper thighs.
✔️ Care: To maintain the longevity of your swimsuit, it's best to follow the brand's provided care instructions. They're usually located in the online product description and/or on the swimsuit's care label. Some brands recommend hand washing, which requires extra effort, but many swimsuits are machine washable and can be laundered in the washer for easy care. In general, all bathing suits should air dry. Bathing suits are largely made of spandex, and the high temperature inside the dryer can compromise the integrity of the fabric.
