Foundation is the key to a flawless-looking complexion. Luckily, you don’t have to break the bank to score an outstanding formula. In Good Housekeeping Beauty Lab testing, "some of the least expensive foundations surprised our professional makeup artist evaluators with texture and application that was on par with high-end products," says GH Beauty Lab Director Sabina Wizemann.

Our top picks:

Our beauty scientists and chemists at the GH Beauty Lab has tested hundreds of foundations over the years, at times even with professional makeup artists, evaluating factors like how each formula blends, spreads, and feels. The No7 Lift & Luminate Triple Action Serum Foundation is our top pick because it wows professional makeup artists with its skincare-infused formula that nourishes and brightens. Our list also includes other drugstore foundations for every skin type and need.

      • Blends easily
      • Radiant finish

      Cons

      • May not be ideal for oily skin

No7's foundation is more than just makeup: It's infused with skincare ingredients like peptides, plus vitamins C and E to firm and brighten skin. It earned points with professional makeup artists for its believable, radiant finish, easy application, and smooth blending. Makeup artist Birgitte Philippides called it “very impressive” and “flawless.” However, since it's heavily hydrating, it may not be ideal for oily skin types.

      Pros

      • Buildable for more coverage
      • Looks natural on skin

      Cons

      • Can feel heavy on skin

With a wide range of shades and a super-affordable price, this smooth liquid foundation should be a go-to: It gives medium coverage, but can be layered on problem areas for fuller coverage. It uses the Trublend's "Invisiblend Technology," which in non-marketing terms means the water-based and oil-free formula melts into the skin for a more natural-looking appearance. However, some reviewers said it felt heavy on skin.

Halo Glow Skin Tint SPF 50

      Pros

      • Adds glow
      • Good score for evening skin
      • Spreads easily
      • Moisturizing/hydrating

      Cons

      • Thin texture makes it harder to blend

Accurately named, this skin tint really does give a gorgeous glow. In Beauty Lab testing it earned a good score for evening skin, plus testers appreciated that it spreads easily and is hydrating. “This lightweight skin tint offers pretty good medium coverage and can be built up to full coverage,” says GH Beauty Lab Senior Chemist Danusia Wnek. “The finish is natural with a little bit of glow. It did apply relatively smooth and evenly onto skin. Once blended, it evens out skin really well. It was long lasting and didn't break up on my skin throughout the day.”

Just note that one tester said, “while still super blendable, it does take a little more time to blend because of its runny, thin, texture.”

        Pros

        • Wide shade range
        • Doubles as concealer

        Cons

        • Formula is on the heavy side

This foundation is also formulated to serve as a concealer—and it does a great job at both tasks. "I've tried tons of different high value foundations and drugstore foundations but this beats them all," a reviewer said. As a twofer, it can camouflage eye circles, redness, and other imperfections, but that also means the formula is on the heavier side.

        • Vitamin-infused formula
        • Contains SPF
        • Contains antioxidants

        Cons

        • Not as long-lasting

How we chose the best drugstore foundations

        double line break

The GH Beauty Lab has tested hundreds of foundations over the years, evaluating each foundation on key performance factors including dispensing, texture, application (spreadability, blendability, and buildability), coverage, and overall feel. We have tested foundations with professional makeup artists who visited our Lab, tried various formulas without knowing the brand or name, and evaluated them based on coverage, spreadability, buildability, and ease of use. We also distributed products to testers across skin types and tones to use and fill out standardized surveys. Additionally, this list includes GH Beauty Lab scientists and editor favorites.

What to look for when shopping for a drugstore foundation

        double line break

Keep these factors in mind when looking for a drugstore foundation:

✔️ Format: Liquid is the most common option, but foundations also come in powder (great for oily skin) and stick formats. Decide which format you find easiest to apply.

✔️ Skin type: Your complexion needs are one of the most important things to consider when choosing a foundation. Those with dry skin should look for a hydrating option (seek out moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid), oily skin is best suited with a matte finish, and blurring foundations are great for mature skin to help smooth the appearance of fine lines.

✔️ Finish: The most common finishes are matte, satin, and dewy, so determine which works best for your skin.
