• Three brands of toddler towers/stools are under recall by the CPSC: Woodure, Mangohood, and HARPPA.
  • All three pose safety risks, including tip-over possibilities and entrapment hazards.
  • Families who have purchased these items can seek repair kits from the parent companies.

Parents love toddler learning towers because they get kids up to counter height, so they can be on the same level as adults when it comes to making meals in the kitchen, while offering guardrails on the sides to keep little chefs from falling off. Montessori families especially love the way they let kids get hands-on, which encourages independence in the future.

But when it comes to these stools, leaving kids to be independent isn’t really the move—kids often climb on them improperly, leading to a risk that they can tip over. Supervision is always needed.

But even with an eagle-eyed adult in the room, not all learning towers are created equal. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) just issued recalls on three brands of learning towers because of tip-over and entrapment hazards. These new recalls are on top of ones issued previously this year from brands like Little Partners, Guidecraft, TOMY/Boon, and Sdadi. For families with a learning tower in their kitchen, it’s best to go check the CPSC website to see if there are any safety warnings.

What should families look for in a learning tower?

Because of the frequency of these recalls, the Good Housekeeping Institute is no longer recommending he use of toddler learning tower. But for families who want to continue to use one, here are some things to be on the lookout for:

✔️ Recalls and warnings: Are there any safety alerts for the tower a the CPSC website?

✔️ Tip-over risk: Will it fall over if a kid climbs on it improperly?

✔️ Entrapment hazards: Can a kid’s torso fit through the bars or guardrails, making them at risk for entrapment?

✔️ Sturdiness of materials: Will the platform become loose or detach over time?

✔️ Pinch points: If it has parts that fold up, are there any chances of little fingers getting in there?

✔️ Weight and height specifications: And keep in mind that once kids’ knees are taller than the tower frame, the frame is no longer protective.

✔️ Items in reach: Once kids get up on the tower, will they have access to any kitchen equipment they shouldn’t touch?

Even if these all look OK, it’s still always important to be present with kids when they’re using these towers, since they often find new and innovative ways to be unsafe. “My daughter got so excited about her new learning tower that she climbed it wildly, all over, from every direction,” one Good Housekeeping Institute tester told us when we were testing toddler towers. “She did everything except enter carefully through the front.”
