John Green is returning to fiction after almost a decade away from novel writing. The multi-hyphenate YA-author/nonfiction writer/YouTuber most recently published the nonfiction NYT bestseller Everything is Tuberculosis in 2025, tracing how the world has been shaped by one of the deadliest diseases.

On September 22nd, he’ll release his first-ever adult fiction book, titled Hollywood, Ending. It doesn’t have a cover yet, but it’s already available for pre-order, so you can read it as soon as it publishes!

Although today he’s a nonfiction powerhouse, John Green started out as a YA writer known for tearjerker stories. His most popular novel is The Fault in Our Stars, a YA love story following two teenagers with cancer. It’s one of the best-selling books of all time, with over 23 million copies sold and a popular 2014 movie adaptation starring Shailene Woodley. His last foray into fiction was Turtles All the Way Down in 2017; since then, he’s been writing nonfiction.

His first-ever adult fiction book, Hollywood, Ending, will follow young actors Kai and Juniper as they get their big break with a buzzy Andy Warhol biopic. As their careers take off and they develop feelings for each other, they must reckon with the price of fame and the changes it brings to their lives.

“It’s a book about navigating love and loss all while participating in the strange, complicated exchanges of attention and trauma of the social internet that has become something no longer reserved for movie stars alone,” Green said. “Writing it reminded me that writing can be joyful and help me to visit rooms in my mind I just can't get to any other way.”

John Green’s books ruled the YA scene of the 2010s. If you were a teenage literary It Girl during that time, you probably unironically quoted lines from The Fault in Our Stars like “Maybe okay will be our always.” John Green’s adult debut is exciting news for his longtime readers, who have aged from the YA demographic to the adult demographic in his time away from novel writing.

Has his nonfiction stint changed what his fiction looks like? Will Hollywood, Ending be another tearjerker? We’re excited to find out in September.
