On October 9, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a recall announcement by Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. of Brooklyn, NY.

The company is voluntarily recalling its Starfish Seafood Trio product, which consists of cold-smoked salmon, halibut, and trout, because it’s potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. (Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. didn’t manufacture the recalled product, but is its wholesale distributor.)

The possible contamination was discovered by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. The recall is impacting six states, but the good news: no illnesses have been reported so far.

Health risks linked to Listeria monocytogenes

The company announcement states that Listeria monocytogenes is “an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), listeria infection takes two forms: intestinal illness, which is usually mild in healthy people, and invasive illness, which spreads beyond your gut to other parts of your body. Invasive listeria infection can be very serious, especially if you’re in a higher-risk group, including those who are pregnant.

Specific symptoms of intestinal listeriosis (listeria infection) include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

Specific symptoms of invasive listeriosis include:

  • Flu-like symptoms, such as muscle aches and fatigue
  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • Seizures

If you experience any symptoms that could indicate invasive listeriosis and you ate food tied to a recall, contact your health care provider right away. This is especially important if you're pregnant, 65 or older, or have a weakened immune system.
